Definition
Environmental
Education (EE)is a process that
allows individuals to explore
environmental issues, involve in
problem solving, and take action to
improve the environment.
 As a result, individuals develop a deeper
understanding of environmental issues
and have the skills to make informed and
responsible decisions.
Cont…
 Environmental Education (EE) is a process in which individuals gain
awareness of their environment and acquire knowledge, skills, values,
experiences, and also the determination, which will enable them to act -
individually and collectively - to solve present and future environmental
problems
According
to
(UNESCO,
Tbilisi
Declaration
, 1978)
 Environmental education is a learning process that increases people’s
knowledge and awareness about the environment and associated
challenges, develops the necessary skills and expertise to address the
challenges, and fosters attitudes, motivations, and commitments to
make informed decisions and take responsible action (UNESCO, Tbilisi
Declaration, 1978).
Responsibility
of Man
Man, as a part and
parcel of the environment, has
to recognize the role and
importance of environment in
order to protect it and to get
protection from it, for this, he
needs environmental
education
Goal of EE  Today environmental education is understood to be:
Education about the environment (building awareness,
understanding and skills necessary to obtain this
understanding);
Education in (or from) the environment (where learning
occurs in nature, outside of the classroom); and
Education for the environment (the ultimate goal for
protection and maintainable development)
Components
of EE
 Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and environmental
challenges
 Knowledge and understanding of the environment and
environmental challenges
 Attitudes of concern for the environment and motivation to
improve or maintain environmental quality
 Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenges
 Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of
environmental challenges
Principles of
EE
 Environmental education must involve everyone.
 Environmental education must be lifelong.
 Environmental education must be holistic and about connections.
 Environmental education must be practical.
Objectives of
EE
1. Awareness
2. Knowledge
3. Attitudes
4. Skills
5. EvaluationAbility
6. Participation
Major
Environmental
Issues
1. Climate Change
2. Environmental Degradation
3. Intensive Farming
4. Land degradation
5. Nuclear issues
6. Overpopulation
7. Ozone Depletion
8. Pollution
9. Resource Depletion
WHY
ENVIRONM
ENTAL
AWARENES
S IS
ESSENTIAL?
Environmental awareness is essential for
1. Protection of the atmosphere
2. Protection of land and its resources
3. Maintenance of biological diversity
4. Environmentally sound management of biotechnology and
hazardous wastes
5. Prevention of illegal circulation in toxic products and wastes
6. Improvement in living and working conditions of the poor by
eliminating poverty and stopping environmental ruin.
Environmental
Education at
Different levels
Level Objectives
Primary education Awareness of environment
(Knowledge)
Secondary education Significance for real-life situation of
environment (Understanding)
Higher secondary education Preservation of natural resources of
environment (Skills)
College & University Education Sustainable development by solving
problems of environment (Attitude
and Evaluation)
ROLEOF
TEACHER
1. To provoke the children’s interest in the environment and its
challenging problems
2. To discuss the method of problem solving or topics
3. To arrange visits
4. To provide materials needed for practical work
5. To arrange for visiting speakers
6. To initiate and develop discussion and debate
7. To provide facilities for displays and exhibitions of the work
carried out.
Environmental
Education is More
Than Information
about the
Environment
Environmental Education Environmental Information
•Increases public awareness and
knowledge of environmental issues
•Provides facts or opinions about
environmental issues
•Does teach individuals critical-
thinking
•Does not necessarily teach individuals
critical-thinking
•Does enhance individuals' problem-
solving and decision-making skills
•Does not necessarily enhance
individuals' problem-solving and
decision-making skills
•Does not advocate a particular
viewpoint
•May advocate a particular viewpoint
Careers
 There are various different career paths one could investigate into within
environmental education. A general outlook of some careers in this field are:
 Federal Government Park Ranger- Responsible for protecting
the national parks, historical sites, and national seashores
 Outdoor Education Teacher- Teach students by using outdoor field and
classroom work. Some invite guest speakers who are experts in their
field to help teach how the basic principles of science are implemented
in the real world.
 Environmental Scientist- Use of field work to research contamination in
nature. Topics such as air pollution, water quality, as well as wildlife and
how humans affect it are researched.
 Environmental Engineer- Involves the combination of biology/chemistry
with engineering to generate ways to ensure the health of the planet.
CONCLUSION
 Chinese say about the need to educate “If you plan for a year,
plant rice, if you plan for the years, plant trees, but if you plan for a
century educate the people.”
Thank you!
