Why would anyone in their right mind answer and ad like this? Humans are explorers by nature - we seek to extend our knowledge by journeying beyond visible horizons.
Exploration is as much about the journey and what we learn from it as it is about the destination. It’s a nonlinear, dynamic process.
Exploration is inherently uncertain. As explorers, there is uncertainty over whether we will be able to find what we're looking for, or if it even exists. When we’re in that boat, we’ll often use words like “stressful,” “intense,” or “needing to manage the client,” but the truth is, it’s scary - and that calls for courage. In our everyday lives as in the lives of explorers, courage isn’t fearlessness. Rather, it’s the ability to do what we must in spite of our fears.
There’s a lot to thinking like an explorer. We focus on three aspects here: obtaining provisions (trading, berrypicking, foraging); navigation (trailblazing, orienting, mapmaking); and coping with obstacles (backtracking, rerouting, improvising).
“Be Prepared” is the Boy Scout Motto. But as any scout knows, no one starts out prepared; there’s a reason the first rank in Scouting is called a Tenderfoot. Preparation is a skill acquired through experience, and mistakes are a part of that.
In our journeys, we come away changed as individuals as knowledge gives way to understanding. That understanding is our greatest reward… it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

As UX professionals, we pride ourselves on our empathy for our users, yet we often struggle to bridge the gap with the developers who conjure our designs into reality. UXers and Developers often think much alike – both professions call for creativity, attention to detail, and an analytical perspective – but we work from different playbooks. We speak of minimalist design; developers speak of elegant code. We look to UX design patterns, developers look to Object Oriented design patterns. This presentation explores areas of common ground and techniques for ‘working across the aisle’ via documentation, communication, and collaboration.

Personas aren’t the only kid on the block when it comes to using archetypes to understand how people think and feel. The Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) is also based on archetypes, and is the most widely used personality assessment in use today. The MBTI defines sixteen distinct personality types based on four dimensions, describing a range of ways that people relate to and engage with the world. Based on the work of Carl Jung, the MBTI has been subjected to decades of rigorous academic study and practical evaluation.
The Meyers-Briggs compliments the context and insights that come from primary research, and is a powerful lens through which interaction designers may more clearly understand users’ needs, motivations, and experiences. This talk will provide an overview of the Myers-Briggs, highlight research and thought leadership relating personality types to technology usage, examine controversies and limitations of the MBTI and share ways to use personality types to support and communicate design, including a brief case study.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
