What is Web 2.0 ?
■ Web 2.0 describes the second generation World Wide
Web sites that emphasize user-generated content,
usability, and interoperability.
■ Although Web 2.0 suggests a new version of the World
Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any
technical specification, but rather to cumulative changes
in the way Web pages are made and used.
■ The term was popularized by Tim O'Reilly and Dale
Dougherty at the O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 Conference in
late 2004, though it was first coined by Darcy DiNucci
in 1999.
■ A Web 2.0 site may allow users to interact and
collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as
creators of user-generated content in a virtual
community, in contrast to Web sites where people are
limited to the passive viewing of content.
■ Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites,
blogs, wikis, folksonomies, video sharing sites, hosted
services, Web applications, and mashups.
------------ ANUPAMA SAINI ------------ 2
Key Features of Web 2.0
1. Folksonomy - free classification of information; allows users
to collectively classify and find information (e.g. tagging)
2. Rich User Experience - dynamic content; responsive to user
input
3. User Participation - information flows two ways between
site owner and site user by means of evaluation, review, and
commenting. Site users add content for others to see
4. Software as a service - Web 2.0 sites developed APIs to
allow automated usage, such as by an app or mashup
5. Mass Participation - Universal web access leads to
differentiation of concerns from the traditional internet user
base

What is Library 2.0
■ Library 2.0 is a transformation in the way library services are delivered to library users. It
provides new tools to make the library space (both virtual and physical) more interactive,
collaborative and driven by community needs. It encourages collaborative two-way social
interactions between library staff and library users.
■ Maness defines Library 2.0 as “The application of interactive, collaborative and multi
media web based technologies to web based library services and collection” (Maness,
2006). He mostly focuses on web based services which library can use in this Web 2.0
environment.
■ The basic idea of Library 2.0 is to transform library service by making them more
personalize, more interactive, collaborative, more web-based, driven by community needs.
------------ ANUPAMA SAINI ------------ 4
■ Library 2.0 requires user participation and feedback in the development and maintenance of library services.
■ The phrase was coined by Michael Casey in his blog ‘LibraryCrunch’ in 2005, although the concepts that collectively
make up "Library 2.0" existed well before then. The term was a spinoff of "Web 2.0"

Web 2.0 in Libraries

  • 1. WEB 2.O IN LIBRARIES Presented By: Anupama Saini M-03 MLISc Department of Library and Information Science University of Delhi
  • 2. What is Web 2.0 ? ■ Web 2.0 describes the second generation World Wide Web sites that emphasize user-generated content, usability, and interoperability. ■ Although Web 2.0 suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specification, but rather to cumulative changes in the way Web pages are made and used. ■ The term was popularized by Tim O'Reilly and Dale Dougherty at the O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 Conference in late 2004, though it was first coined by Darcy DiNucci in 1999. ■ A Web 2.0 site may allow users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to Web sites where people are limited to the passive viewing of content. ■ Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, folksonomies, video sharing sites, hosted services, Web applications, and mashups. ------------ ANUPAMA SAINI ------------ 2
  • 3. Key Features of Web 2.0 1. Folksonomy - free classification of information; allows users to collectively classify and find information (e.g. tagging) 2. Rich User Experience - dynamic content; responsive to user input 3. User Participation - information flows two ways between site owner and site user by means of evaluation, review, and commenting. Site users add content for others to see 4. Software as a service - Web 2.0 sites developed APIs to allow automated usage, such as by an app or mashup 5. Mass Participation - Universal web access leads to differentiation of concerns from the traditional internet user base ------------ ANUPAMA SAINI ------------ 3
  • 4. What is Library 2.0 ■ Library 2.0 is a transformation in the way library services are delivered to library users. It provides new tools to make the library space (both virtual and physical) more interactive, collaborative and driven by community needs. It encourages collaborative two-way social interactions between library staff and library users. ■ Maness defines Library 2.0 as “The application of interactive, collaborative and multi media web based technologies to web based library services and collection” (Maness, 2006). He mostly focuses on web based services which library can use in this Web 2.0 environment. ■ The basic idea of Library 2.0 is to transform library service by making them more personalize, more interactive, collaborative, more web-based, driven by community needs. ------------ ANUPAMA SAINI ------------ 4 ■ Library 2.0 requires user participation and feedback in the development and maintenance of library services. ■ The phrase was coined by Michael Casey in his blog ‘LibraryCrunch’ in 2005, although the concepts that collectively make up "Library 2.0" existed well before then. The term was a spinoff of "Web 2.0"
