Who is a Genius?
by: Mario E. Capule
Geniuses are made not born. (1) If you have your own positive characteristics you can
be a genius.
(2) It is believed that a genius is a person who displays exceptional intellectual ability,
I am confident that many genius people were already written in history. As Filipinos and a real
Bulakeňos, we have the likes of Marcelo H. Del Pilar, who bravely fought the invaders of our
land. Because of his extra-ordinary intelligence, he showed his love to our countrymen.
Does it mean once we are not displaying exceptional intellectual ability we are not
genius?

My friends, (3) I would like to give you my own perception of being a genius. You don’t
need to have a high IQ (Intelligent Quotient) to be called one. Remember, everyone can be a
genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that
it is stupid.
Dear friends, intelligence for me is not the only characteristic to be a genius. We need
to be creative in some particular aspects. We need to be resourceful, innovative to make
something out of nothing.
Let me be honest in saying that (4) it is
convincing to say that it is impossible for
someone to be good at everything. People
always end up in being good at some things but
bad at other things. Therefore, though I’m bad at
other things, good thing is I also have something
special in me. I am proud to say that I am creative
enough in doing something and with that I can
say that I too am a genius.
Let me tell you my own experience why I
said that I am genius, one time during the
lockdown, mother and father’s days were
celebrated but since we needed to stay home, I thought of creating flowers out of trashes just
to give to my parents as my gifts. With that, I think I showed how genius I was.
(5) Always bear in mind that geniuses are made not born even stupid person can learn
something from the world of intellectually geniuses.
You too can also be a genius if you listen more than talk, you adapt to change easily,
you know there’s a lot you don’t know, you are always curious and you are open-minded. Then
surely if you have these signs I have mentioned, you are now a real genius!
Processing Questions:
1. What belief statements are stated in the text?

2. How about some convictions mentioned?

3. If you would be asked to give another conviction what would you write?

Expressing One’s Beliefs/Convictions
Based on a Material Viewed
Previously you learned that selections you read may be influenced by culture, history,
environment, or other factors. The selection which is a persuasive essay has to do with what
you learned last time.
The short text you have just read and answered in the previous activity unexpectedly
shows your good beliefs in life. Continue reading to understand more about beliefs which will
surely help you to appreciate the beauty of life.
Do you know the difference of belief from conviction?
If you do, you can find this module easy.
WHAT IS BELIEF?
Belief is the mental acceptance or something that a person holds of what is true. A
belief system is a set of beliefs held by a particular society or group, culture or tradition,
religion or spirituality, values or attitudes, or individual. This belief system will tell whether a
person or society’s set of belief is right and wrong or true and false. Since all humans are
created equal, they are shaped and influenced in different factors. These factors make the
people to be what they are. The way how they act and the way how they speak are affected
according to their beliefs. But this can change once some factors affect what you believe in.
Critical thinking and reasoning are highly needed in decision-making. Whatever choice you
choose is based on your thorough thinking. Sometimes there are some words used as hints
for belief like “ I think/feel, for me, I believe, it looks/seems and others.
Examples:
For me, Filipinos are one of the happiest people in the world.
We all believe Philippines has different cultures and traditions compared to
other countries.
They feel it will rain tonight because of the strong wind.
We think spending more time with friends gives luck to friendship.
I can say that you are more beautiful than her.
Contrary to this, there is also the so called False-belief. This refers to the
understanding of a person’s belief or representation which is contrary to reality or contrary to
what is good to a certain person.
Examples:
She borrowed a ball pen without returning back to the owner.
Anthony takes a bath every other day.
They all talk during online class.
My cousin gives all he has in gambling.
Taking alcohol everyday makes me strong.

WHAT IS CONVICTION?
On the other hand, conviction is a firm and long-term belief on a particular subject
which cannot be changed. Someone will be convinced after knowing and understanding all
the information. Meaning to say, conviction is created after judging from the available
information. It mostly remains without changing over time. Some of the words as hints here
are “convinced, convicted, certain, confident, firm, sure/assure, determine, definitely and
others.
Examples: I am convinced that we need to help them.
After staying at home for almost a year, they are certain that families become
closer to each other.
They are determined that all children are entitled to receive an education.
She is confident that you did something wrong.
He is firm with the decision he has just mentioned.

Read the essay then answer the questions given after the reading material. Who is a Genius? by: Mario E. Capule Geniuses are made not born. (1) If you have your own positive characteristics you can be a genius. (2) It is believed that a genius is a person who displays exceptional intellectual ability, I am confident that many genius people were already written in history. As Filipinos and a real Bulakeňos, we have the likes of Marcelo H. Del Pilar, who bravely fought the invaders of our land. Because of his extra-ordinary intelligence, he showed his love to our countrymen. Does it mean once we are not displaying exceptional intellectual ability we are not genius? • 8. 3 My friends, (3) I would like to give you my own perception of being a genius. You don’t need to have a high IQ (Intelligent Quotient) to be called one. Remember, everyone can be a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. Dear friends, intelligence for me is not the only characteristic to be a genius. We need to be creative in some particular aspects. We need to be resourceful, innovative to make something out of nothing. Let me be honest in saying that (4) it is convincing to say that it is impossible for someone to be good at everything. People always end up in being good at some things but bad at other things. Therefore, though I’m bad at other things, good thing is I also have something special in me. I am proud to say that I am creative enough in doing something and with that I can say that I too am a genius. Let me tell you my own experience why I said that I am genius, one time during the lockdown, mother and father’s days were celebrated but since we needed to stay home, I thought of creating flowers out of trashes just to give to my parents as my gifts. With that, I think I showed how genius I was. (5) Always bear in mind that geniuses are made not born even stupid person can learn something from the world of intellectually geniuses. You too can also be a genius if you listen more than talk, you adapt to change easily, you know there’s a lot you don’t know, you are always curious and you are open-minded. Then surely if you have these signs I have mentioned, you are now a real genius! Processing Questions: 1. What belief statements are stated in the text? ______________________________________________________________________________ 2. How about some convictions mentioned? ______________________________________________________________________ 3. If you would be asked to give another conviction what would you write? ______________________________________________________________________ Downloaded by Russel Paganao (russel.paganao@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|26571415
  • 9. 4 Expressing One’s Beliefs/Convictions Based on a Material Viewed Previously you learned that selections you read may be influenced by culture, history, environment, or other factors. The selection which is a persuasive essay has to do with what you learned last time. The short text you have just read and answered in the previous activity unexpectedly shows your good beliefs in life. Continue reading to understand more about beliefs which will surely help you to appreciate the beauty of life. Do you know the difference of belief from conviction? If you do, you can find this module easy. WHAT IS BELIEF? Belief is the mental acceptance or something that a person holds of what is true. A belief system is a set of beliefs held by a particular society or group, culture or tradition, religion or spirituality, values or attitudes, or individual. This belief system will tell whether a person or society’s set of belief is right and wrong or true and false. Since all humans are created equal, they are shaped and influenced in different factors. These factors make the people to be what they are. The way how they act and the way how they speak are affected according to their beliefs. But this can change once some factors affect what you believe in. Critical thinking and reasoning are highly needed in decision-making. Whatever choice you choose is based on your thorough thinking. Sometimes there are some words used as hints for belief like “ I think/feel, for me, I believe, it looks/seems and others. Examples: For me, Filipinos are one of the happiest people in the world. We all believe Philippines has different cultures and traditions compared to other countries. They feel it will rain tonight because of the strong wind. We think spending more time with friends gives luck to friendship. I can say that you are more beautiful than her. Contrary to this, there is also the so called False-belief. This refers to the understanding of a person’s belief or representation which is contrary to reality or contrary to what is good to a certain person. Examples: She borrowed a ball pen without returning back to the owner. Anthony takes a bath every other day. They all talk during online class. My cousin gives all he has in gambling. Taking alcohol everyday makes me strong. What is It Downloaded by Russel Paganao (russel.paganao@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|26571415
