I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency:
Express one’s beliefs/convictions based on a
material viewed (ENG7VC-IV-i-16)
B. Objectives:
1. Differentiate beliefs and convictions
2. Formulate sentences that express beliefs and
convictions
3. Observe correct use of signal phrases
expressing beliefs and opinions
II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Belief
 is something that is considered correct and true, e.g. a person
can say that she believes she is beautiful. (No one should
question it because it is correct and true that she is beautiful in
her own standards of beauty).
 a person can believe in various things such as cultural or
personal faith, morality, or values, e.g. we believe in God, do
things out of tradition, or have our principles on what is good or
bad.
 it expresses viewpoints, but it not based on facts or evidences
 is also an opinion, hence, it cannot serve as a basis for a formal
argument
 Are very personal ideas and cannot be rejected because they
express an opinion
 Also, beliefs are not mandatory to change completely with new
experiences.
Conviction
 is something that an individual is convinced of…to be convinced
you need to obtain all the related information through:
a. statistical – based on analysis of statistics
b. observational – based on what the person has observed
c. causal – based on what fact has caused a particular factual
result
d. experiential – based on what experience shows can be
inferred from the facts
 remains the same even with new experiences and even after long
periods of time because it is built on concrete information
 is more complex than belief as it becomes a point of view of the
world
Let us take for example a truth from the Science Lesson
about Refraction. See if you will get convinced or
develop a conviction on how light is manipulated as it
pass from one medium to another.
Let’s watch these videos:
https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=417051219576175 https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1096291630773951
Refraction is believed by all people who have studied
about it.
It is an event which was tested to be true that even kids
can prove it by experimentation.
Many phrases are suitable in everyday speech and some types of writing, such as on blogs and
personal websites. You have probably already seen or used some of these phrases:
I think…
I believe…
I feel…
In my opinion… and
I would say…
Example:
Imagine that you have your own food website. Today, you are writing or talking about the
world’s best street food. You might say:
In my opinion, Bicol has the best street food.
Add Strength
But suppose you wanted to make the statement stronger. You can do it by adding an adverb or
adjective.
For example:
I really think…
I strongly believe…
I truly feel… or
In my honest opinion…
In addition, giving reasons for your opinion adds strength to the claim. Let’s hear the street
food statement again:
In my honest opinion, Bicol has the best street food. I have never seen more choices of what to
eat – and everything I’ve tried has been delicious!
Formal Phrases
Let’s look at a few phrases that are more common
in formal situations. You might, for example, hear one of
these at a business meeting or a conference, or in a formal
paper:
From my point of view…
From my perspective…
In my view… or
It seems to me that…
Here’s an example:
In my view, cruise ships should be banned. They produce
massive amounts of waste and use the dirtiest fuel in the
world.
Though phrases like “In my view…” are usually more formal
than those like “I think,” there is no rule for where or when
you can use them. It’s often a matter of personal choice.
