Consists of : a) 8 Graphic & Stimulus
b) Cloze passage
TRY TO SCORE AT LEAST 12/15
How to score for graphic/stimulus?
1) Look and read the graphic/stimulus.
2) Read the question.
3) Find clues through wording.
4) Read all options given.
5) Choose the best answer.
SEC A - MCQs
How to score for cloze passage?
1) Read the whole passage.
2) Look at the sentences before the missing word.
3) Take notice of the tenses it uses.
4) Check the word before the missing word.
5) Read the option given.
6) Choose the best answer
STRUCTURED RESPONSE
HOW TO SCORE 10/10 MARKS
1) Read the construct. Do not look at the question.
2) Read the question until the end. Take notice of the WH question.
3) Write short answer. This is not Reading Comprehension.
4) Make sure the spelling and capitalization are correct.
5) Always take note the form of word you copy. Whether it is
singular, adjective, noun or verb.
READING COMPREHENSION
1) For this section you have at least 50 minutes.
2) Read the questions starting from the Summary. This will help you to
predict what the text about.
3) Then, read the text.
4) If you have a problem with the wording, don’t worry. Just read on.
5) You can guess the meaning of the word by reading the word or
sentence before and after. Make a guess.
6) What’s important is for you to understand what the text is about.
READING COMPREHENSION
7) If it is a story, underline the verbs/doing words the character did
from one to another. This will help you with summary later on.
8) If it is an article of process, underline the process one by one
including advices.
9) If it is an article of pro and cons, underline the pro and cons but not
the examples.
READING COMPREHENSION
10) Read the question. The paragraph mention will indicate from where the
answer can be found.
11) Always take notice of the WH questions.
- What = Apa (Benda) - Why = Kenapa (Sebab)
- Who = Siapa (Orang) - How = Bagaimana (Cara)
- Where = Mana (Tempat)
12) It will also leave a clue through wording.
Most of the time, you can lift your answer straight away from the text but
REMEMBER
a) DO NOT WRITE WORDS THAT ARE NOT RELEVANT to the question.
b) b) MAKE SURE THE GRAMMAR IS CORRECT
10) For the last question, usually wants Ss using own words.
Just CHANGE a FEW WORDS into WORDS THAT HAVE the SAME MEANING.
YOUR TURN
1) Read the text
2) Do Q26(a) and (b), 27, and 30.
Be careful with Q27,
A phrase consist a few words but not the whole sentence.
A word = 1 word
SUMMARY
1) Identify what the question wants.
2) Identify the paragraphs and then read the text.
3) If it is a story, underline the verbs that show what the character did.
4) Put all the sentences together in ONE PARAGRAPH according to the
storyline.
5) Write the 10 words given because it will remind you on
a) Tenses to use
b) Pronoun e.g. He, she or I
6) You don’t have to change the words but you can change some of the
word to another that have the same meaning.
LITERATURE
1)Poem
a) You must study your poem. If you don’t it would be difficult.
b) Read the question.
c) Answer it using correct word and grammar because if it is wrong
grammatically, marks will not be awarded.
d) Do not quote the lines from the poem unless the question asked
you to identify “which line that shows.....”
LITERATURE
2)Short Story.
a) You must remember the storyline and the characteristic of all the
characters.
b) Read the abstract given because most answer would be from the
text.
c) When you lift your answer, do not include parts that are not
relevant.
d) When it asks for opinion, answer with Yes or No first, then give your

PAPER 1 – DIRECTED WRITING
DIRECTED WRITING
An essay which Ss need to fulfill the requirements of the question
within 45 minutes.
Marks being distributed according to :
1) Format F – 1-3 marks
2) Content or/and elaboration C – 14-12 marks
3) Language L – 20 marks
Total 35 marks
DIRECTED WRITING
First 10 minutes :
1. Read question
2. Identify format
3. Identify content and elaboration.
REMEMBER,
even though 14 contents/points being given,
ALWAYS
ELABORATE for each content.
DIRECTED WRITING
How to elaborate
1. Describe the point.
2. Give a reason(why or how)
3. Give an example or effects
For example;
“thick smoke released by factory”
The thick black smoke is being released to the air every Friday as it is
unfiltered. This brings to a lot of breathing problems to the villagers.
DIRECTED WRITING
Beside the format, always remember the audience. Who are you and
the essay is for whom. This is because different audience will bring
different tones. For example,
• a letter to a friend describing what you did during the holiday would
be different to a letter to your mother asking her to let you go for a trip
• an article to the newspaper would be different to an article in the
school magazine.

PAPER 1- CONTINUOUS WRITING
CONTINUOUS WRITING
This essay is being marked through impression.
Therefore, you need to impress the examiner with your story and it
also need to be flawless.
There are 5 types of essay:
1)Narrative
2)Descriptive
3)Reflective
4) Expository
5) Argumentative
CONTINUOUS WRITING
WHY these essays are the ones easiest for you to write and score?
• A story is not as boring as an article
• If, you don’t have any ideas, you can use ideas from novels,
magazines or sample essays that you read or from movies, drama or
advertisement you watch or from songs that you listen to.
• Usually, there would be at least 3 questions that are for these types
of essay.
CONTINUOUS WRITING
In order to get good grades of more than 30 marks over 50, all of your
simple sentence structure must be grammatically correct.
Simple sentence does not mean a very short sentence like below.
“The book is in the drawer.” or
“The flowers smells nice.” or
“My family have never been able to agree.” or
“A love letter was slipped under the door.”
CONTINUOUS WRITING
How to make simple sentence to a more interesting sentence?
By using or adding
1) Vivid words
2) Adjectives
3) Adverbs
4) Similes
5) Idioms
CONTINUOUS WRITING
A)VIVID WORDS – PRECISE WORDS, BE SPECIFIC
For example the word “WALK”
1. A cat walked across the street.
A cat darted across the street.
2. The thief walked around the house.
The thief crept around the house.
3. He walked up and down the corridor waiting for his turn.
He paced up and down the corridor waiting for his turn.
4. The trainer walked towards the dolphins.
The trainer waded towards the dolphins.
CONTINUOUS WRITING
B) ADJECTIVES – WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE NOUN/SUBJECT
1) He sat on the bench.
He sat on the old bench
2) Sally mix the paint before painting it on the wall.
Sally mix the colourful paint before painting it on the wall.
3) The letter was written yesterday.
The long and sad letter was written yesterday.
4) We went to see a movie in a theatre.
We went to see a thriller movie in a cramped theatre.
CONTINUOUS WRITING
C) ADVERBS – WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE VERB/DOING
WORD
1) He bustled to the front of the class.
He quietly bustled to the front of the class.
2) Aminah ate the cake.
Greedily, Aminah ate the cake.
3) Mawi sang five songs at the concert.
Mawi sang five songs at the concert rather badly.
4) Norhidayah waved her hands to Mawi.
Norhidayah waved her hands frantically to Mawi.
CONTINUOUS WRITING
D) SIMILES – COMPARISON OF AN ADJECTIVE WITH A
THING THAT ARE ALIKE.
1) The pudding tasted sweet.
The pudding tasted as sweet as honey.
2) My neighbour is round.
My neighbour is as round as a barrel.
3) This paper is easy.
This paper is as easy as ABC.
4) The two boys are thick.
The two boys are as thick as marble.
CONTINUOUS WRITING
E)IDIOMS
1) Shut up Maggie! You really cannot keep secret.
Shut up Maggie! You really have a big mouth.
2) The students were listening carefully as I taught English.
The students were all ears as I taught English.
3) The robbers were heavily armed
The robbers were armed to the teeth.
4) The newly married couple are deeply in love with each other.
The newly married couple head over heel.

IN PAIRS CAN YOU WRITE A SIMPLE SENTENCE THAT HAVE AT LEAST 2
ELEMENTS.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Bird/perched/roof.
The grey pigeon perched quietly on the old roof

a) You must read, REMEMBER the plot, characteristic, theme and
moral value of the novel.
b) Read the question. Identify what the question wants.
c) Make sure you write your answer minimum of 3 paragraphs. IF NOT
YOU WILL ONLY GET 2 MARKS for Language
LITERATURE
HOW TO STRUCTURE YOUR COMPOSITION?
i) Para 1- Introduction
- write which novel you going to write about
- write which character/theme/plot you going to
write about.
ii) Para 2 - 4 – Content/Body
- For each reason, one paragraph at least
iii) Last Para – Conclusion
- confirm with your choice and how the
character/theme/moral value teaches you a lesson how to
survive.
LITERATURE – YOUR TURN
“WRITE ABOUT A CHARACTER THAT YOU LOOK UP TO. GIVE REASONS
FOR YOUR ANSWER” (SPM2007)
1) Identify the character
2) Identify the reasons.
For each reason, identify the textual evidence.
3) Describe the textual evidence in detail.
4) Comment on what the character did.
5) Conclude by telling what you have learn from the character.
YOUR TURN
In a group of 5 people, you are going to answer and write your short
composition for Q34.
Follow the instruction.
Make sure you write at least 3 paragraphs.
5 groups will be chosen to present their work.

  • 2. SPM ENGLISH 1119 The paper consists of 3 parts. 1. Paper 1 – Directed Writing - Continuous Writing - 85 marks - I hour and 45 minutes 2. Paper 2 – Sec A (MCQs) - Sec B (Structured Response) - Sec C (Reading Comprehension & Summary) - Sec D (Form 4 & 5 Poems and The Novel Catch Us If You Can) - 70 marks - 2 hours and 15 minutes 3. Paper 3 – Oral Assessment
  • 3. PAPER 3 • 3 assessments • Semester 1 – Public Speaking • Semester 2 – Individual/Pair work (Presentation) • Semester 3 – Pair/Group work (Presentation) • Per assessment – 30 marks • Presentation – body language, greetings • Fluency – repetition, pauses • Content – relevance and structure • Vocabulary • Grammar • For SPM, the best mark will be key-in in July, 2015
  • 4. PAPER 2 THIS PAPER CONSISTS OF 4 SECTION. Sec A – MCQs - 15 marks Sec B – Structured Response - 10 marks Sec C – Reading Comprehension & Summary - 25 marks Sec D – Literature - Poems - 5 marks Novel – Catch Us If You Can - 15 marks
  • 5. Sec A - MCQs Consists of : a) 8 Graphic & Stimulus b) Cloze passage TRY TO SCORE AT LEAST 12/15 How to score for graphic/stimulus? 1) Look and read the graphic/stimulus. 2) Read the question. 3) Find clues through wording. 4) Read all options given. 5) Choose the best answer.
  • 6. SEC A - MCQs How to score for cloze passage? 1) Read the whole passage. 2) Look at the sentences before the missing word. 3) Take notice of the tenses it uses. 4) Check the word before the missing word. 5) Read the option given. 6) Choose the best answer
  • 7. STRUCTURED RESPONSE HOW TO SCORE 10/10 MARKS 1) Read the construct. Do not look at the question. 2) Read the question until the end. Take notice of the WH question. 3) Write short answer. This is not Reading Comprehension. 4) Make sure the spelling and capitalization are correct. 5) Always take note the form of word you copy. Whether it is singular, adjective, noun or verb.
  • 8. READING COMPREHENSION 1) For this section you have at least 50 minutes. 2) Read the questions starting from the Summary. This will help you to predict what the text about. 3) Then, read the text. 4) If you have a problem with the wording, don’t worry. Just read on. 5) You can guess the meaning of the word by reading the word or sentence before and after. Make a guess. 6) What’s important is for you to understand what the text is about.
  • 9. READING COMPREHENSION 7) If it is a story, underline the verbs/doing words the character did from one to another. This will help you with summary later on. 8) If it is an article of process, underline the process one by one including advices. 9) If it is an article of pro and cons, underline the pro and cons but not the examples.
  • 10. READING COMPREHENSION 10) Read the question. The paragraph mention will indicate from where the answer can be found. 11) Always take notice of the WH questions. - What = Apa (Benda) - Why = Kenapa (Sebab) - Who = Siapa (Orang) - How = Bagaimana (Cara) - Where = Mana (Tempat) 12) It will also leave a clue through wording. Most of the time, you can lift your answer straight away from the text but REMEMBER a) DO NOT WRITE WORDS THAT ARE NOT RELEVANT to the question. b) b) MAKE SURE THE GRAMMAR IS CORRECT 10) For the last question, usually wants Ss using own words. Just CHANGE a FEW WORDS into WORDS THAT HAVE the SAME MEANING.
  • 11. YOUR TURN 1) Read the text 2) Do Q26(a) and (b), 27, and 30. Be careful with Q27, A phrase consist a few words but not the whole sentence. A word = 1 word
  • 12. SUMMARY 1) Identify what the question wants. 2) Identify the paragraphs and then read the text. 3) If it is a story, underline the verbs that show what the character did. 4) Put all the sentences together in ONE PARAGRAPH according to the storyline. 5) Write the 10 words given because it will remind you on a) Tenses to use b) Pronoun e.g. He, she or I 6) You don’t have to change the words but you can change some of the word to another that have the same meaning.
  • 13. LITERATURE 1)Poem a) You must study your poem. If you don’t it would be difficult. b) Read the question. c) Answer it using correct word and grammar because if it is wrong grammatically, marks will not be awarded. d) Do not quote the lines from the poem unless the question asked you to identify “which line that shows.....”

LITERATURE 2)Short Story. a) You must remember the storyline and the characteristic of all the characters. b) Read the abstract given because most answer would be from the text. c) When you lift your answer, do not include parts that are not relevant. d) When it asks for opinion, answer with Yes or No first, then give your Reason
  • 15. PAPER 1 – DIRECTED WRITING DIRECTED WRITING An essay which Ss need to fulfill the requirements of the question within 45 minutes. Marks being distributed according to : 1) Format F – 1-3 marks 2) Content or/and elaboration C – 14-12 marks 3) Language L – 20 marks Total 35 marks
  • 16. DIRECTED WRITING First 10 minutes : 1. Read question 2. Identify format 3. Identify content and elaboration. REMEMBER, even though 14 contents/points being given, ALWAYS ELABORATE for each content.
  • 17. DIRECTED WRITING How to elaborate 1. Describe the point. 2. Give a reason(why or how) 3. Give an example or effects For example; “thick smoke released by factory” The thick black smoke is being released to the air every Friday as it is unfiltered. This brings to a lot of breathing problems to the villagers.
  • 18. DIRECTED WRITING Beside the format, always remember the audience. Who are you and the essay is for whom. This is because different audience will bring different tones. For example, • a letter to a friend describing what you did during the holiday would be different to a letter to your mother asking her to let you go for a trip • an article to the newspaper would be different to an article in the school magazine.
  • 19. YOUR TURN LET US TAKE A LOOK AT PAST YEAR QUESTION. 1) CAN YOU IDENTIFY THE FORMAT? 2) CAN YOU IDENTIFY CONTENTS? NOW, WORK IN PAIRS AND DISCUSS THE POSSIBLE ELABORATION/REASONS FOR THE CONTENTS.
  • 20. PAPER 1- CONTINUOUS WRITING CONTINUOUS WRITING This essay is being marked through impression. Therefore, you need to impress the examiner with your story and it also need to be flawless. There are 5 types of essay: 1)Narrative 2)Descriptive 3)Reflective 4) Expository 5) Argumentative

CONTINUOUS WRITING WHY these essays are the ones easiest for you to write and score? • A story is not as boring as an article • If, you don’t have any ideas, you can use ideas from novels, magazines or sample essays that you read or from movies, drama or advertisement you watch or from songs that you listen to. • Usually, there would be at least 3 questions that are for these types of essay.
  • 22. CONTINUOUS WRITING In order to get good grades of more than 30 marks over 50, all of your simple sentence structure must be grammatically correct. Simple sentence does not mean a very short sentence like below. “The book is in the drawer.” or “The flowers smells nice.” or “My family have never been able to agree.” or “A love letter was slipped under the door.”
  • 23. CONTINUOUS WRITING How to make simple sentence to a more interesting sentence? By using or adding 1) Vivid words 2) Adjectives 3) Adverbs 4) Similes 5) Idioms
  • 24. CONTINUOUS WRITING A)VIVID WORDS – PRECISE WORDS, BE SPECIFIC For example the word “WALK” 1. A cat walked across the street. A cat darted across the street. 2. The thief walked around the house. The thief crept around the house. 3. He walked up and down the corridor waiting for his turn. He paced up and down the corridor waiting for his turn. 4. The trainer walked towards the dolphins. The trainer waded towards the dolphins.
  • 25. CONTINUOUS WRITING B) ADJECTIVES – WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE NOUN/SUBJECT 1) He sat on the bench. He sat on the old bench 2) Sally mix the paint before painting it on the wall. Sally mix the colourful paint before painting it on the wall. 3) The letter was written yesterday. The long and sad letter was written yesterday. 4) We went to see a movie in a theatre. We went to see a thriller movie in a cramped theatre.
  • 26. CONTINUOUS WRITING C) ADVERBS – WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE VERB/DOING WORD 1) He bustled to the front of the class. He quietly bustled to the front of the class. 2) Aminah ate the cake. Greedily, Aminah ate the cake. 3) Mawi sang five songs at the concert. Mawi sang five songs at the concert rather badly. 4) Norhidayah waved her hands to Mawi. Norhidayah waved her hands frantically to Mawi.
  • 27. CONTINUOUS WRITING D) SIMILES – COMPARISON OF AN ADJECTIVE WITH A THING THAT ARE ALIKE. 1) The pudding tasted sweet. The pudding tasted as sweet as honey. 2) My neighbour is round. My neighbour is as round as a barrel. 3) This paper is easy. This paper is as easy as ABC. 4) The two boys are thick. The two boys are as thick as marble.
  • 28. CONTINUOUS WRITING E)IDIOMS 1) Shut up Maggie! You really cannot keep secret. Shut up Maggie! You really have a big mouth. 2) The students were listening carefully as I taught English. The students were all ears as I taught English. 3) The robbers were heavily armed The robbers were armed to the teeth. 4) The newly married couple are deeply in love with each other. The newly married couple head over heel.
  • 29. YOUR TURN IN PAIRS CAN YOU WRITE A SIMPLE SENTENCE THAT HAVE AT LEAST 2 ELEMENTS. FOR EXAMPLE: Bird/perched/roof. The grey pigeon perched quietly on the old roof A strange bird perched on the red roof as quietly as a mouse.

LITERATURE HOW TO STRUCTURE YOUR COMPOSITION? i) Para 1- Introduction - write which novel you going to write about - write which character/theme/plot you going to write about. ii) Para 2 - 4 – Content/Body - For each reason, one paragraph at least iii) Last Para – Conclusion - confirm with your choice and how the character/theme/moral value teaches you a lesson how to survive.
