Spm answering techniques

  • 2. Time Management  Paper 1: 1 3/4 hours  1 hour 45 minutes  2 questions  Section A  Section B
  • 3. Section A Directed Writing • Known also as DW • 35 marks • Understand the task requirement • Decide the appropriate format • Use all the notes given • Can use own words (bonus)
  • 4. Types of questions  a report an informal letter A talk (speech) A formal letter A dialogue
  • 5. Organize time • 15 minutes of preparation • 10 minutes of editing • 15 minutes of rewriting • 5 minutes of final touch….check out for spelling mistakes/ tenses errors/ points missing
  • 6. A Report  Past tense  Normally report on things/events that had happened  Try using own points if you find that it is difficult to elaborate on the given points  Make sure that the meaning is similar
  • 7. Marking  Format: 3 marks  Points used: 12 marks  Language : 20 marks  Total : 35 marks
  • 8. Example of a DW • Give a talk about a reference book • Title: Mathematics Made Simple • Author: Sarimah Suhana • Publisher: Pokok Publications • Attractive presentation • Clear explanations • Helpful diagrams

  • 11. Section B ( CW ) • 50 marks • Needs lots of reading • Let‟s make reading fun and joyful • Let‟s reading a cure for boredom • There‟s no short cut to be a good writer • A good writer is as well a good reader
  • 12. Start writing a diary A day a sentence  A paragraph a week  An essay a fortnight  Start reading-A page a day  A short story a week  A novel a month  Make the dictionary your best friend
  • 13. Reading is Rewarding • Once you start reading and writing, you will feel something new with yourselves • Other subjects could be understood better • Start using English with your friends • Do not bother of grammar errors • Start with „market language‟ • Do not care of others teasings
  • 14. Writing an Essay Start gathering words Jot down any word that links Use mind- mapping strategies Sort out / put in categories the words that come across Develop other words from the key words Draft the essay
  • 15. Final work • Edit the draft • Write out the final work • Edit the errors and spelling mistakes • Memorize good sentence structures • Adopt and adapt the structures to suit into your essay
  • 16. SPM Paper 1119/2 • Time: 2 ¼ hours • 4 Sections A, B, C, D • Section A: 15 marks • Section B: 10 marks • Section C: 25 marks • Section D: 25 marks
  • 17. Section A  Questions 1-8, based on short notes, graphics, advertisement, etc. MCQ  Questions 9-15, cloze text  Identify the tenses  Look for the suitable and correct grammar  Read all throughout
  • 18. Section A  Q 9-15  Cloze text- always look for the tense  Frequently asked questions: - articles (a, an, the), determiners ( the, this, that), prepositions( in, on, of, for, at), pronouns ( his, her, its, their, our) - Tenses (simple present/past, present/past perfect tenses )
  • 19. Section B ( Info Transfer ) • Short and precise • Don‟t fish for the answer • Irrelevant answers ( lifted blindly) not accepted
  • 20. Section C ( 25 marks )  Read and re-read  Underline sentence/topic statement  Figure out the meaning of the text  Look for main characters  Look for the descriptions of the main character  Get the main theme of the text
  • 21. Doing the task Look at the paragraph meant for every question Understand the questions carefully Be careful with the need of the questions Giving your views/opinions Lift only relevant answers Do leave blanks without answers Minimize the errors
  • 22. Q.31-SUMMARY Read the instructions carefully Use the 10 words given Write within the lines stated only Leave out the long examples Categorize/ classify the words To be safe, use the words in the passage Cut down the less important adjectives
  • 23. Marking Scheme  Summary  1 mark for each point = 10 marks  5 marks – Use of English = 5  5 marks – paraphrase = 5  Use of English + paraphrase = 10/2=5 2  Language = 5  Total + 15
