Many Graduate with a Higher National Diploma
Presented some 45 years ago the higher national diploma course made minute influence to the
education of professional engineers until the Second World War; and it was about 10 years ago that
the number of diplomas endowed approached the number sitting the Institution s own examinations.
Since then, nevertheless, the growth has been remarkable and today about 40 per cent of those
qualifying as mechanical engineers by full time or sandwich study do so through the Higher
National Diploma. Originally, the standard of the final assessed examination was matching to that
of the H.N.C. though, of course, in more subjects and it was not known for H.N.C. and H.N.D.
students to share the same class. Today, however, the standards are very much higher and method
those of universitydegrees. It is often overlooked that the university year is shorter than college
year, and that classes tend to finish well before examination period; so that, the H.N.D. course
duration of some 2000 hours or so is much the same as that in a full time university degree
sequence. The increase in numbers in recent years is undoubtedly due to the recognition accorded
by industry to the merits of the course. Firms have been able to recruit students unacceptable to the
university, and sponsor them on a course which not only leads to a professional qualification, but
which also has a smaller rate and an output capable of undertaking responsible work without
reprocessing. Another advantage is that the study

Social Norms In Our Society
With the goal for you to keep on staying acknowledged in the present social society you live in
today you must follow a certain set of social norms for the duration of your life, often you
manage without acknowledging it. Even though social norms are broken regular surrounding
you on a wide range of various levels some innocuous and some more serious and careless, like
stealing. Social norms are not generally the same since different societies have different values.
Without social norms there would be total chaos; social norms make society s conduct clearly
predictable. To me our society is predictable anyway because it makes people feel more safe
knowing that everyone is doing the same thing. When a normis broken in our society people

Causes And Disadvantages Of The Middle Ages
The middle ages were a time of great change and political upheaval. With the advent of barbarians
migrating from all across the continent to better their lives and to receive the protection of the
King or Emperor. Learning and preserving the past became a priority for the first time ever as a
country wide goal. With the help of some truly great leaders like Charlemagnewe have the countries
and historical artifacts we know today. Barbarian migrations had major effects on Europe, during
the Middle Ages, starting with the decline of Rome, the Franks, and most importantly by
Charlemagne. The decline of the Roman empirewas caused by two things, one a lack of capable
leaders to rule and second of all an insurgence of those they considered barbarians. A barbarian
being anyone who wasn t Roman, but in this case specifically the Huns who came from the East
as well as the Goths who lived around the empire in the outskirts and further. The decline of Rome
did not happen overnight it happened over the late fourth century and fifth century. Starting with
the Huns invasion of tribes in the far east causing them and others to flee. That led the various
Gothic tribes to cross the Danube River looking for protection from the Huns that they hoped could
be provided by the Romans. At this point in A.D 376 and later on the groups of Huns were not just
one large group but they were split up into multiple groups with their own hierarchy and aims to

Analysis Of Thomas Hardy s Tess Of The D Urbervilles
English Lit Essay Draft
Throughout the 19th century in Victorian England, where Thomas Hardy lived and worked on his
poetry and novels, religion was becoming a popular controversy. Before this era Britain was highly
populated with Christians, a large number of the British public attending Church on a regular basis.
However, something changed in the 19th century; a significant number of public figures began to
announce their lack of religious beliefs. Scientific advances throughout the era, such as Charles
Darwin s Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection, caused the general British public to question
their previous judgement. Tim Lambert (2014) explains that an 1851 survey showed that just 40%
of the British population had visited Church on a particular Sunday. In 1881, the same survey
showed that just 1/3 of the population had visited Church; figures for Christianity were in decline.
Britain s fall in faith was reflected in Hardy s Tess of the D Urbervilles . Hardy almost expressed
an anti Christian view on life, mocking Christian beliefs throughout the novel. George P. Landow
(2014) wrote that Like so many other major Victorian authors who later in life had little sympathy
with Evangelical Christianity, as a young man Thomas Hardy had an important Evangelical phase
that left a deep impress on his thought. Hardy s phase of Christianity, and later disbelief in it, led
to the questioning of many moral and ethical issues which can be seen in his work. For example, in

Abortion As A Social Controversy
This problem becomes more complicated when the topic of discussion is controversial. A
controversy can at best be defined as a concept or idea, which produces discord among a number of
people (Xu, Parks, Chu, Zhang, 2010). Controversies therefore, describe information on which a lot
of people strongly disagree creating a false ring of truth around the topic. controversies often have
profound social, political and economic implications, and more and more often they feature public
disagreements among scientific, technical or medical experts. Whether the confrontation occurs
over the control of AIDS, about the proposed introduction of the abortionpill, about whether
vaccines causes autism, over the location of an airport, or over the implications of the greenhouse
effect, experts become involved. Disputes between experts provoke major difficulties for decision
making and policy implementation in the case of such public confrontations, which, more often
than not, are vociferous, protracted, rancorous and unresolved (). Disputes between experts provoke

John Barry Political Analysis
1)The changes in the economic structure of life can be seen within the modern movement of
markets. The modern movement of markets began from the promotion of a more systematic
formation of socio economic relations and class. It later leads to the unrealistic notion that without
consumption, there was no healthy economy. These changes can be reflected in the modern
development of what Barry believes to be constituted as ideal economic structure compared to what
history made us believe.
To those who still uphold the traditions of religious and political thought that influenced the
shaping of our society and the founding of our government, it is astonishing, and of course
discouraging, to see economics now elevated to the positon of ultimate ... Show more content on

Politics has created this falsified ideal that a competition driven economy between the division of
socio economic class is inherently equal in opportunity. That these classes that of the more able and
the less able, or that of the rich and the poorer, or even that of the ruler and the ruled, are at times,
have been of ameliorated social and religious ideals that instructed the strong to help the weak. In
fact, the exact opposite is true in nature. Traditional religious and political notions do not exist.
Only the skeleton remains of what once stood an influential governance upon the economic
structure of life. Barry further exemplifies the change in economic structure of life as a purely
economic ideal, competition does not contain or imply any such instructions. The strong influence
that is shaping society and even our government is the ability that ideal competition generates the
ability for the loser to simply accumulate in human dumps, like stores of industrial waste, until they
gain enough misery and strength to overpower the winners. Thus reflecting the nature of power that
the changes in the economic structure of life has lead to the transformation of politics being
controlled but the structure itself. This can be seen in the modern day example of how Wall Street
was able to get away credit default swaps right from underneath the nose of the government and
thus controlling the entirety of the economic

and I. Don t you see that? It s not just your problem, it s ours. In A Sorrowful Woman , I found the
husband s nurturing ways most appealing. He completely rearranged his life to make sure that his
wife was as comfortable as possible. The passage that most signifies this is found on page 41.
With great care he rearranged his life. He got up hours early, did the shopping, cooked the
breakfast, took the boy to nursery school. We will manage, he said, until you re better, however
long that is. He did his work, collected the boy from the school, came home and made the
supper, washed the dishes, got the child to bed. He managed everything. One evening, just as she
was on the verge of swallowing her draught, there was a timid knock on her door. The little boy
came in wearing his pajamas. Daddy has fallen asleep on my bed and I can t get in. There s not

clearly loved her, instead of getting her the help she clearly needed, he let her sickness overcome
her.

During The Reformation Dbq Essay
Individuals and groups of a society can promote change of the status quo. Many people took action
and spoke out against issues within society during the Reformation. The Reformation was a
movement in the 16th century where people called out the Roman Catholic Church on its unjust
teachings. These people include John Wycliffe, Geoffrey Chaucer, and Martin Luther. The Church
did not approve of this criticism and aimed to eliminate those who defied the Church. In the first
document, John Wycliffe claims that the Church is contradicting itself. He claims that the Church
is engaging in behavior that does not comply with what they preach. John also claims that the pope

The popes believe that the indulgences are positive because they provide an opportunity for those to
have their sins forgiven. In document seven, Martin Luther criticizes the pope and the Church for
their use of indulgences. Luther claims that people are falsely being forgiven for their sins with the
use of money. He thinks this is teaching the false doctrine of money being more important than
ethics. People should be forgiven by God, not by money, and should do so through helping the
needy instead of buying the indulgences. Document eight, Pope Leo X s response to Martin Luther,
states that Martin Luther s comments and motive is the work of the devil. He thinks Luther is a
threat to the Church and orders him to stop preaching. Pope Leo X realizes that Luther is a
legitimate threat and tries to undermine his credibility. In the ninth document, Luther claims that
the pope s response shows that he is the Antichrist. He claims that the pope has no real evidence to
prove he is heretical. Luther is getting the attention of his followers and is showing that the
corruption within the Church is no joke. Despite threats of punishment, Luther shows resilience in
his pursuit for the improvement of the

Harry Rosen thrives in presenting its customers with a visual image that they can be confident in
regardless of the occasion. When customers come in and see how the mannequins are dressed, it
automatically sparks different ideas in their mind in terms of how they want to be dressed.
However, the problem with the mannequins at Harry Rosen is that it is not changed on regular
basis and is changed close to every 2 months. That is a problem because customers want new ideas;
they want to be shown a new outfit that they might have never thought of, different colors, different
combinations. When the mannequins are not changed on regular basis, it also tells the customers
that there is no new merchandise in the store, thus making it difficult for the associates in selling
the merchandise, as customers don t want to buy merchandise that is not in fashion or season for
that matter. As this trend continues, it would lead to customers being dissatisfied and possibly
loss of customers to competition. Having Mannequins is a must in retail, but knowing where to

His speeches had an enduring impact on millions of men and women especially The Sinews of
Peace that he gave on March 5, 1946, at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri that later was
referred to as the Iron Curtain Speech. It was the most significant and influential speech of all
CHurchill s speeches. Out of admiration for Sir Winston Churchill, President Harry Truman
attended and introduced him to the audience. The main purpose of the speech was to argue for a
closer relationship with the United States and in regulating the post world. It was CHurchill s
passion and oratory excellence that rallied his countrymen, Parliament, and the Allies around the
world when Britain stood fast and alone against Hitler. When Churchill present the Iron Curtain
Speech to the House of Commons, he reiterated and encouraged the troops to give everything they
had even if it was only blood, toil, sweat, and tears. According to Cannadine s meticulous research,
the term Iron Curtain was used to describe the actual metal barrier that separated the Warsaw Pact
countries from the Nato countries until the end of the Cold War. Ultimately, it became an
ideological barrier as well and it was Winston Churchill who first conceived the term Iron Curtain.

The Blood Sucking Behavior Of Hirudo
The Blood Sucking Behavior of Hirudo Miguel Soto Professor Folkerts Pepperdine University
23 April 2014 Abstract Hirudo are well known for their blood sucking, fluid feeding behavior.
The purpose of this experiment was to get a better understanding of Hirudo s blood feeding
behavior; more specifically, the study was designed to answer the question: how do different
volumes of blood affect Hirudo s thirst? By soaking a sponge with different volumes of cow
blood and measuring the time it took for the Hirudo to attach to the blood soaked sponge, the
experiment yielded results that help explain whether or not there was a connection between the
amount of blood available to Hirudo for feeding and the time it takes Hirudo to attach to the
blood source. The experiment was conducted using six Hirudo, with a total of ten different
volumes of blood per sponge (ranging from 1mL to 10mL) and two trials done for each volume
of blood. Data collected from the experiment was analyzed with the SPSS program and found
that differences in attachment time for the various levels of blood in the sponge were significant
at the .05 level. These results explain that Hirudo do in fact take significantly less time to attach to
a blood source containing a higher volume of blood. This information can be helpful for medical
practitioners who use Hirudo as an alternative form of medicine. In nature, these results can also

Rhetorical Analysis Of Is Google Making USupid
For almost two decades, Google has surely been the top dog of search engines on the worldwide
internet. Beginning as a research project by two college students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page,
called Backrub, Google has now become the answer to all questions. Google s mission is to
organize the world s information and make it accessible and useful. According to Niholas Carr s

In Carr s article he explains that he is a writer and the internet has become very useful to him over

The Sheep Reflection
Explanation: Jesus continued speaking to the people and explained that while only thieves climb
over the wall of the sheepfold, the shepherd enters through the door. And when he calls his own
sheep by name and leads them out, they follow him because they know his voice. But they would
not follow a stranger because they would not know his voice. But the people did not understand
what he meant by this parable, so Jesuscontinued, saying that he was the Door of the sheep.
Thieves came before, but the sheep did not know their voice and did not follow them. Those
thieves came to steal and kill and destroy, but Jesus, the Door, came to bring salvation and abundant
life. Jesus continued, saying that he was the Good Shepherdand gave his life for his sheep. But the
hired servant who does not own the sheep or care for the sheep leaves when the wolf comes.
And the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. But the Good Shepherd knows his sheep and
his sheep know him. And as he knew the Father, so the Father knew him. And he has other sheep
of other folds that he will bring into one fold, and he will lay down his life for them. And the
Father loves him because he lays down his life of himself, no one taking it from him. He has the
power to lay it down and to take it again. And that was the commandment he had received from his
Father. Then the Jews were again divided because of him, some accusing him of demon
possession, and others arguing that a devil could not open the eyes of the blind, as Jesus had so
recently done.
Application: In this passage, Jesus is explaining to the people about the shepherd, the sheepfold,
and the sheep. This is considered to be the only parable in the book of John, and perhaps it does
not even qualify as a parable at all. Either way, it is a beautiful, encouraging picture of the way
that Jesus cares for us, his sheep, even to the point of laying down his life for us. Jesus is our
Shepherd, he leads us and guides us and cares for us. Sheep are very stupid creatures and need a lot
of tending; so we are wayward humans needing much care and watching. But Christ is not only the
shepherd; he is the door itself. We enter into life and safety through him. It is not through as
through something that

Literary Analysis Of A Tree Grows In Brooklyn
The Everlasting Tree An American classic is a novel that has beautiful language, complex
characters that change throughout the novel and is timeless. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn does just
that. Betty Smith, author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, wrote this novel about a young girl s
coming of age during the early 1900 s. Smith wanted to publish a novelthat showed the American
Dream and the struggles of being poor in America. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is considered an
American classic because of its connection to the American Dream, how the hardships of being
poor prevented attaining that dream and the impact of Francie being a woman with the
injustices she faced. Betty Smith was a German immigrant that lived in Williamsburg Brooklyn,

Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid Tale Essay
It is necessary for the government to impose a certain amount of power and control of its citizens
in order for a society to function properly. However, too much power and control in a society
eliminates the freedom of the residents, forbidding them to live an ordinary life. In the dystopian
futuristic novel, The Handmaids Tale, Margaret Atwooddemonstrates the theme of power and
control through an oppressive society called the Republic of Gilead. The government established
power and control through the use of the wall, military control, the salvaging, the particicution, and
gender.
The dead bodies of those who have committed acts against the government hang on a structure
called the Wall. The Wall is a method to implement fear on the citizens. Offred describes the
purpose of the wall when she states, We stop, together as of on signal and stand to loook at the
bodies. It doesn t matter if we look. Were supposed to look: this is what they are there for,
hanging on the wall. Sometimes they ll be there for days, until there s a new batch, so as many
people as possible will have a chance to see them (Atwood 40). The wall is a symbol of sin and it
creates fear and force in the Republic of Gilead. It is a warning to the citizens of the punishment for
disobeying the rules. The people that hang on the Wall have committed atrocities and must be made
into examples, for the rest (Atwood 42). Therefore, when the citizens see the punishment for
violating the government s rules, they

The Ethics Of Animal Testing By Robin Mckie
The ethics of animal tests: inside the lab where marmosets are given Parkinson s by Robin McKie
examines the situation of marmosets who are subjected to testing and experiments. McKie uses
several literary techniques such as statistics, case studies and emotive language in his article to not
only communicate the cruel and unjustifiable nature of animal testing, but also the necessity we
humans have for it; while experimenting on animals can be considered immoral, it s still a much
better alternative than using humans.
Emotive language is used several times throughout the article. McKie describes the marmosets as
being no bigger than cats. This automatically causes us to think of the marmosets in the same way
that they think of cats; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reader assumes from what McKie wrote about animal testing that the researchers must be
callous individuals who are indifferent to animal suffering, but in truth they have an innate love of
animals. McKie provides evidence of this by describing how they end up knitting hammocks for the
animals and having favourites. He mentions an interview with a King s College technician which
supports his evidence. A different employee also claimed that researching on marmosets had
allowed them to develop medicines which have allowed patients to run their lives normally. Prior
to King s College s experiments on marmosets, Parkinson s patients were a mass of uncontrollable
movement, jerking and waving their hands and arms. McKie convinces the reader of why, while
animal testing can be seen as unethical and wrong, it still is very important in the medical field. I
feel that the life of a human has greater value than that of an animal, and that in this case the means
justifies the end. By sacrificing hundreds of animals for experiments we end up saving thousands of
humans.
Throughout his article, McKie uses a great variety of phrases and techniques to strikingly portray
the reality of animal testing and the lesser known activities which happen behind the scenes. He
powerfully communicates both the negative and positive features of using animals in experiments
without definitively taking a side, thus he lets us form our own opinions on the morality of animal
testing. Personally, I am a proponent of the use of animals in medical experiments solely because I
am convinced that they are the most reliable and accurate was to gauge the effectiveness of

Analysis Of The Novel Adirondack Sundown
Alexis O Dell
Mr. Mucilli/Mr. Simonds
24 October 2017 Adirondack Sundown Essay
Assignment
The Adirondack Park is a significant location in the novel Adirondack Sundown. Graham Scott
and Sarah Waters were picnicking one day at Rockwood State Forest when Graham suddenly had
to go back to work, Sarah stayed behind to take pictures of the scenery and then, she was abducted.
Many places in the Adirondacks are very significant to the story. Some places in the Adirondack
Park that are in the novel are Kane Mountain, Rockwood State Forest and Old Forge.
South of the Adirondack Park is where Kane Mountain is located. Kane Mountain was formed by
glaciers during the ice age. The mountain is between several lakes, including Pine Lake and
Canada Lake. The hike to the top of Kane Mountain is moderate in difficulty. There are many trails
that exist. The most commonly used trail is the East trail departing from Green Lake Road.
Kane Mountain plays a significant role in the novel because a character named Kane Johnson, who
abducted Sarah, and his sister Caroga lived here. The Kane Mountain Observation Station played a
huge role in the novel also.
The Kane Mountain Fire Observation Station is a historic location on Kane Mountain at Caroga
Lake in Fulton County, New York. The station includes a 60 foot tall, steel frame lookout tower
erected in 1925, an observer s cabin built about 1960, and foot trail. The tower and trail are
contributing resources. The tower is a prefabricated structure built by the Aermotor Corporation
and provided a front line of defense in preserving the Adirondack Forest Preserve from the hazards
of forest fires. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
The 858 acre Rockwood State Forest is located in Fulton County just south of the Adirondack
Blue Line between NY 29, NY 10A and NY 10. There are nearly five miles of old roads that are
used for cross country skiing in the winter as well as hiking the rest of the year. The main feature
of this state forest is the scenic Rockwood Lake, located off the North Loop Road Trail. The state
land is used for water quality protection, recreation, wildlife habitat and timber production. Some
characteristics of Rockwood would include, Hiking,

Coming Of Age Theme Essay
The Theme of Coming of Age in Literature There comes a time is each person s life when they
reach the point where they are no longer children, but adults. The transition from a child into a
young adult is often referred to as the coming of age, or growing up. The time when this transition
occurs is different in everyone, since everyone is an individual and no two people are alike. Certain
children reach this stage through a tragic, painful event which affects them to such extent that they
are completely changed.
Other children reach this time by simply growing older and having a better understanding of the
world around them. The coming of age really is indefinite and cannot be marked in general

They affirm community solidarity, and the sacredness of common values. (1995, Grolier
Encyclopedia) In addition, cultures use initiation ceremonies to mark the transition from childhood
to adult status. Rites for males are usually more elaborate and dramatic and generally involve the
community more than do those for females. Among the African Gus ii, for example, girls are at
about age nine, boys at twelve years old; Thong a boys may be sixteen. Boys rites often involve
seclusion from women, hazing by older males, test of manliness, and genital operations, including
circumcision. Girls rites are just as bad if not worse with things like removal of the clitoris.
In some places in North America, the ritual is individual where as in Africa and Oceania the ritual
can be collective. A plain Indian adolescent boy undertakes a vision quest; he goes out alone
intothe wilderness, endures hardship, and seeks a vision from his animal guardian spirit; if he gets
one, he returns a man. Yet a different way for these rituals is group rituals. These often takes
months or even years, as among many Australian aboriginal tribes. Novices learn great quantities of
information and obey countless taboos. Instructors are men who are strangers to boys.
Ritual pulls the boy from childhood, especially from his mother. He moves from the category of
women and privileged children toward the privileged one of the adult males. Such rites maintain
adult male togetherness and strengthen

During the 70s, the fight for equal rights and Black power was a ravaging fight. Famous protesters

leader of the Black Power Movement (BPM). Through her struggles, Shakur educates her

The rulers of this country have always considered their property more important than our lives.
They call us murderers, but we were not responsible for the twenty eight brother inmates and nine
hostages murdered at attica (17). Providing examples of tyranny and accusations personify the evil
that the legal system has against African Americans and further digs the idea that every officer is
out there hunting them down. Repeating the phrase They call us murderers... Shakur demonstrates
that the police are blaming the murders as a community fight or placing the blame on an African
American because it is convenient (15 19). The repetition in the beginning of each sentence proves
that African Americans were blamed for murders that they did not commit. To further push her
purpose of joining the BPM and protect the African American population, Shakur persuades her
audience to observe the injustices and accusations happening. Close to finishing her speech,
Shakur profoundly speaks by translating ethos and allusions to benefit the BPM. Credibility
travels deeper into the mind when a speaker addresses an audience and Shakur recalls that, they

The Performance Factor As My Dependent Variable
The Performance factor as my dependent variable in this research proposal can be for each of the
boxers utilizing the orthodox/southpaw position, observing the quantity of triumphs against an
orthodox/southpaw adversary.
Age: the average age for an active professional boxer ranges from 22 40 years
Opponent s stance: this could either be southpaw or orthodox yet this data directs the choice of
evaluating performance in a boxing match (win/lose/draw).
Ratings or Rankings: base on the rule that a boxer has been dormant for over a year, won t be
incorporated into the rankings, unless he has a match formally booked. Every boxer is positioned
on the outcomes they have accomplished in their own particular weight division. A boxer can t be
positioned in a particular weight division until he has contended in that division..
Diverse/Different weight classes: Separating boxers into divisions guarantees reasonable BOUTS.
For instance, a contender who measures more than 200 pounds has more drive behind his punch,
while a boxer who weighs 140 pounds will probably be quicker and more light footed than the
heavier boxer. While weight classes were initially isolated into eight divisions, the confining classes
today are separated to 17 divisions, permitting contenders to be all the more unequivocally
coordinated with their weight partners.
Number of fights involved: Mileage in boxing is not controlled by matches, but rather by harm
sustained. So 5 dangerous battles may be a boxer s whole

Comparing the Presentation of War in the Oliver and Branagh Film Versions of Henry the Fifth
Many films have been made of Shakespeare s play, Henry V . The two I am analysing are by
Laurence Olivier (1944) and Kenneth Branagh (1988). They are made for very different
audiences with different aims. Although they seem very different, in some ways, Branagh s
version used many techniques of Olivier s. Both productions were performed to communicate
the director s feelings on war to the audience and were performed when war had played a part in
recent history. Olivier s version is very pro war in that he glorifies war but at the same time it
lacks realism so that it was not too close to the reality that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The spirit of whose ancestors it has been humbly attempted to recapture. This is intended to
make the audience feel proud to be fighting for England as their ancestors did. Being produced
during the Second World War, many of the viewers may have had relatives out in battle. They
had no clear idea of the reality due to the lack of technology and communication. The light
hearted view of the battles reassured the audience. It is shown very patriotically and heroically
so the audiences would feel good about the war and have felt proud to be English. The French in
this film may have represented the Germans in the war as the enemy. In the battle the enemy is
shown as evil to make the audience feel they re doing the right thing fighting evil. Branagh s film
was set many years later when society was more immune to shocking films and television
programmes. He presents a dynamic king duped into fighting a bloody, vicious war whose victory
is undone within a generation. Olivier s version is quite pro war whereas Branagh s version seems
very anti war. This film portrays his negative attitude to war by emphasising the realism of the
battle. The gore and realistic fighting will have shocked the audience and may have allowed them
to consider the conditions in Vietnam. For example in the battle of Agincourt, the close up

Hinduism Research Paper Shiva is one of Hinduism s Supreme Beings, the god of the destroyer of
evil and the transformer within the Hindu Trimurti, that also includes Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva is
known as the Lord who is half woman, thus implying Shiva is androgynous for there is a
masculine Shiva and a feminine Shiva that are together as one, known as ardhavari ishvara.
Shiva as ardhavari ishvara is one of many examples of androgyny of Hindu gods in the Vedic
literature. From scholarly analysis, androgyny of Hindu gods, with the focus of this paper on
Shiva as ardhavari ishvara, creates a positive aspect with the presence of non gender conformity of
the divine within the Hindu faith system. This also causes problems and confusion from the
Western world perspective and within the Hindu worshipping communities in the that this lack of
gender conformity can lead to the mislabeling of the identity of Hindu worshippers and the divine.
This paper will strive to discuss the positive and negative benefits of worshipping androgynous
gods, especially in today s society where there are still gender inequalities, misinterpretations and
many varying definitions surrounding what constitutes gender within social context or even
religion. Most other religions require followers to refer to their God with gendered terms, but this is
an interesting and positive quality that the Hinduism faith does not adhere to.

Archimedes Of Syracuse And The Current State Of Computing
As long as the field of mathematics has existed, people have been searching for shortcuts to
eliminate the monotony and difficulty of calculating figures accurately. As a result, human beings
began to develop new technologies to simplify this process. In ancient history, the abacus was a
useful device in calculating simple numbers requiring addition and subtraction. In the seventeenth
century, the first mechanical calculators were able to perform multiplication and division through
repetitions of addition and subtraction. Calculators were then programmed in order to multiply and
divide automatically. From these early devices emerged the first computers and calculators, which
were originally intended to calculate figures. Now, modern computers are expected to perform a
variety of functions, outside of calculations, quickly and effectively. However, back in the time of
abacuses, an ancient Greek mathematician was discovering the formulas and primitive mechanical
devices that have evolved into the current state of computing technology. Archimedesof Syracuse
was born in 287 BC in Syracuse, Sicily. Not much is known about his early life or his parents, but
it is believed he studied alongside his mathematical contemporaries Conon of Samos and
Eratosthenes of Cyrene in Egypt. In 212 BC, he was killed by the invading Roman soldiers when he
refused to comply while solving geometrical problems in the dirt. Although he died prematurely,

Comparing The United Kingdom And Mexico
Comparing the US with the United Kingdom and Mexico When this assignment became
available I had a good poke around looking at comparisons for many different countries. It was
interesting to see the differences and similarities, and I had a hard time choosing which two
countries to choose for my comparison. In the end, I chose the UK and Mexico because these
were places I had visited before. For convenience, the graphical comparison for these countries is
included at the end of the post, but I will refer to the numbers in the text. To begin with the UK,
the one statistic I found interesting was its Power Distance score of 35. Although I expected it
to be somewhat close the score for the US (40), I actually thought that the UK would score
higher, perhaps around 50. Since the UK still has royalty and hereditary titles, I had expected
some of that more historical respect for power distance to filter through to everyday culture.
Apparently not! Another couple of statistics that were interesting to me, when taken together,
were the UK s Long Term Orientation and Indulgence scores. At a score 51, the UK clearly
favors long term thinking to a greater extent than the US (26), however, their Indulgence score is
on par with our own; 69 to our 68. While I realize the two scores are not directly related to each
other, I m surprised to not see a stronger correlation between a view for the future and a culture of
restraint. For Mexico, two traits I found interesting were the scores for

Diversity In The Colonies
The American Colonies: A Life of Diversity For most colonists, new life in America meant
exactly that, a new beginning. They weren t travelling hundreds of miles across the globe to
simply experience life in the New World . Uprooting a family was the decision that changed the
course of many European citizens lives. Upon arriving in America, depending on where you settled
life would be very different from your mother nation, and different from how other colonies lived;
but also, very similar to the lives of others within the American colonies. The main similarities and
differences exist in the same cultural barriers modern day humanity battles gender, race, and class
and ultimately the diversity seen between the Southern, Middle, and New England colonieson these
issues would prove to be the compromise found in the United StatesConstitution. Gender in the
colonies was a demographic that needed to be diverse, without men and women, you cannot breed
to create more human life. Gender was an issue that as time went on, the colonies better understood
how diversity could be the one and only tipping point towards their survival. In the southern
colonies such as Roanoke, initially, only men were sent over. These men were selected as the
cream of the crop from England. Middle aged, strong, and good looking these men might have been
worthy candidates of building a successful colony, but they were missing one thing, women. While

The Anxiety of Self Presentation in Bridget Jones s Diary
The book is about the anxiety of self presentation; Bridget is both Everywoman and an implicitly
ironic observer of Everywoman. (New Yorker) Helen Fielding writes about the anxiety of self
presentation in Bridget Jones s Diary. The New Yorkeraccurately identifies this central theme.
Moreover, it correctly asserts that Bridget s search for meaning and order in her life exemplifies
Everywoman. However, the New Yorker credits her with a far more heightened self awareness than
she possesses. Bridget is not an observer but a reporter. Observing suggests wisdom, often attained

Still, women can relate, and the passage contributes to Fielding s development of Bridget as

Life In The Trenches During WWI
Life in the trenches during WWI was miserable. There seem to be no words that could truly
match the horrific experience, but soldiers tried to conjure images using literature to come close
to their experience. As stated in The World s History, Europe had not warfare on such a scale
since the Napoleonic wars (Spodek 664). Even watching the American Civil War from afar could
not have prepared Europe and the young men that served for the devastation WWI brought. The
poems described the war as a collection of numbed men, simply waiting to die, lines of grey,
muttering faces. Men who had joined to serve their country had now become disillusioned with the
nobility of dying for their country, wondering if the suffering both in and out of the trenches

A Case Study With Sony On Penetration Pricing As Global Pricing Strategy Meaning of
Penetration Pricing This is a marketing strategy used by firms to attract customers to a new
product or service. Penetration pricing is the practice of offering a low price for a new product
or service during its initial offering in order to attract customers away from competitors. The
reasoning behind this marketing strategy is that customers will buy and become aware of the new
product due to its lower price in the marketplace relative to rivals. It can often increase both market
share and sales volume. Additionally, the high sales volume can also lead to lower production costs
and higher inventory turnover, both of which are positive for any firm... Show more content on

Early Twentieth-Century Immigration Effects
Effects of Immigration in the twentieth century
I.Moehling, Carolyn, and Anne Morrison Piehl. IMMIGRATION, CRIME, AND
INCARCERATION IN EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICA*. Demography, 1 Nov. 2009.
Web. .
A.The article is really focusing on whether immigrants affected the crime rate. The standalone
theories in the start of the article suggest they did increase the crime rate, but with no hard proof. As
the article develops deeper, facts and biased opinion come through and display that the immigrants
did not affect the crime rate in the early twentieth century.
B.I learned that immigration did not directly affect the crime rate in the early twentieth century. It
was assumed that they did because the immigrants moved into high traffic, high ... Show more

I learned that employers would hire native born workers over immigrants workers, except none
of them actually apply for the job. They are ashamed of the job, because the low level job has a
status about it and is called an immigrant job. This taking away the argument that natives can t
get entry level jobs due to immigrants in high populated areas. So, the Natives are just unwilling
to do the entry level jobs, because of status and low wages. The weak point is the fact that entry
level jobs are a great way to get easy level experience. The strong point of this article, is when it
talks about employers feeling immigrants are best suited or most appropriate for entry level jobs,
this being said, the employers have a stronger desire to hire the immigrants over the natives. The
weak point is the fact that entry level jobs are a great way to get easy level experience, though it
will help the progress of the career journey, it did not correlate well enough to the main point of the
argument.
The effects of immigrations to the urban culture of America had numerous outcomes, whether
immigrants effected the crime rates, whether they reduced support for social policies such as
welfare, and whether immigrants affected the career path of native born population. The articles
proved that immigrants have little to no effect on crime rates. They proved that they don t create a
loss of public support for social policies. They also proved, that immigrants don t directly affect the

Communication, The Exchange Of Nonverbal And Interpersonal...
Think Piece #1
To me interpersonal communication describes the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages
between two different people. Joseph DeVito states that interpersonal communication is inevitable,
irreversible, and unrepeatable due to these things effective communication is a necessary skill for
us to function in our day to day lives (p. 20). Therefore, I have created a theory for interpersonal
communication that goes as follows; To experience effective communication you must understand:
your culture, the other person s culture, and how to listen effectively. By knowing these three things
you can consistently avoid misunderstandings and promote understanding in your interpersonal and
intercultural relationships.
The first point in my theory is that you can better your skills as an interpersonal communicator by
better understanding your own culture. DeVito states that there are. several major cultural
distinctions that are crucial for more effective communication they are: individualism or
collectivism, high or low context, high or low power distance, masculinity or femininity, high or
low ambiguity tolerance, long or short term orientation, and indulgent or (p. 34). To be able to
understand your or anyone else s culture you must be able to understand the ways that these things
affect communication. Once you understand the ways that you are oriented in these seven
categories due to enculturation you can understand how you communicate and become a more

Many Graduate with a Higher National Diploma Presented some 45 years ago the higher national diploma course made minute influence to the education of professional engineers until the Second World War; and it was about 10 years ago that the number of diplomas endowed approached the number sitting the Institution s own examinations. Since then, nevertheless, the growth has been remarkable and today about 40 per cent of those qualifying as mechanical engineers by full time or sandwich study do so through the Higher National Diploma. Originally, the standard of the final assessed examination was matching to that of the H.N.C. though, of course, in more subjects and it was not known for H.N.C. and H.N.D. students to share the same class. Today, however, the standards are very much higher and method those of universitydegrees. It is often overlooked that the university year is shorter than college year, and that classes tend to finish well before examination period; so that, the H.N.D. course duration of some 2000 hours or so is much the same as that in a full time university degree sequence. The increase in numbers in recent years is undoubtedly due to the recognition accorded by industry to the merits of the course. Firms have been able to recruit students unacceptable to the university, and sponsor them on a course which not only leads to a professional qualification, but which also has a smaller rate and an output capable of undertaking responsible work without reprocessing. Another advantage is that the study ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Causes And Disadvantages Of The Middle Ages The middle ages were a time of great change and political upheaval. With the advent of barbarians migrating from all across the continent to better their lives and to receive the protection of the King or Emperor. Learning and preserving the past became a priority for the first time ever as a country wide goal. With the help of some truly great leaders like Charlemagnewe have the countries and historical artifacts we know today. Barbarian migrations had major effects on Europe, during the Middle Ages, starting with the decline of Rome, the Franks, and most importantly by Charlemagne. The decline of the Roman empirewas caused by two things, one a lack of capable leaders to rule and second of all an insurgence of those they considered barbarians. A barbarian being anyone who wasn t Roman, but in this case specifically the Huns who came from the East as well as the Goths who lived around the empire in the outskirts and further. The decline of Rome did not happen overnight it happened over the late fourth century and fifth century. Starting with the Huns invasion of tribes in the far east causing them and others to flee. That led the various Gothic tribes to cross the Danube River looking for protection from the Huns that they hoped could be provided by the Romans. • 8. Analysis Of Thomas Hardy s Tess Of The D Urbervilles English Lit Essay Draft Throughout the 19th century in Victorian England, where Thomas Hardy lived and worked on his poetry and novels, religion was becoming a popular controversy. Before this era Britain was highly populated with Christians, a large number of the British public attending Church on a regular basis. However, something changed in the 19th century; a significant number of public figures began to announce their lack of religious beliefs. Scientific advances throughout the era, such as Charles Darwin s Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection, caused the general British public to question their previous judgement. Tim Lambert (2014) explains that an 1851 survey showed that just 40% of the British population had visited Church on a particular Sunday. In 1881, the same survey showed that just 1/3 of the population had visited Church; figures for Christianity were in decline. Britain s fall in faith was reflected in Hardy s Tess of the D Urbervilles . Hardy almost expressed an anti Christian view on life, mocking Christian beliefs throughout the novel. George P. Landow (2014) wrote that Like so many other major Victorian authors who later in life had little sympathy with Evangelical Christianity, as a young man Thomas Hardy had an important Evangelical phase that left a deep impress on his thought. Hardy s phase of Christianity, and later disbelief in it, led to the questioning of many moral and ethical issues which can be seen in his work. For example, in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A controversy can at best be defined as a concept or idea, which produces discord among a number of people (Xu, Parks, Chu, Zhang, 2010). Controversies therefore, describe information on which a lot of people strongly disagree creating a false ring of truth around the topic. controversies often have profound social, political and economic implications, and more and more often they feature public disagreements among scientific, technical or medical experts. Whether the confrontation occurs over the control of AIDS, about the proposed introduction of the abortionpill, about whether vaccines causes autism, over the location of an airport, or over the implications of the greenhouse effect, experts become involved. • 10. John Barry Political Analysis 1)The changes in the economic structure of life can be seen within the modern movement of markets. The modern movement of markets began from the promotion of a more systematic formation of socio economic relations and class. It later leads to the unrealistic notion that without consumption, there was no healthy economy. These changes can be reflected in the modern development of what Barry believes to be constituted as ideal economic structure compared to what history made us believe. To those who still uphold the traditions of religious and political thought that influenced the shaping of our society and the founding of our government, it is astonishing, and of course discouraging, to see economics now elevated to the positon of ultimate ... That these classes that of the more able and the less able, or that of the rich and the poorer, or even that of the ruler and the ruled, are at times, have been of ameliorated social and religious ideals that instructed the strong to help the weak. In fact, the exact opposite is true in nature. Traditional religious and political notions do not exist. Only the skeleton remains of what once stood an influential governance upon the economic structure of life. Barry further exemplifies the change in economic structure of life as a purely economic ideal, competition does not contain or imply any such instructions. The strong influence that is shaping society and even our government is the ability that ideal competition generates the ability for the loser to simply accumulate in human dumps, like stores of industrial waste, until they gain enough misery and strength to overpower the winners. Thus reflecting the nature of power that the changes in the economic structure of life has lead to the transformation of politics being controlled but the structure itself. This can be seen in the modern day example of how Wall Street was able to get away credit default swaps right from underneath the nose of the government and thus controlling the entirety of the economic ... Why do you think you respond the way you do to the characters and the stories is your response intellectual, emotional, a result of authorial intent, a mix of these, or something else entirely? Many people took action and spoke out against issues within society during the Reformation. The Reformation was a movement in the 16th century where people called out the Roman Catholic Church on its unjust teachings. These people include John Wycliffe, Geoffrey Chaucer, and Martin Luther. The Church did not approve of this criticism and aimed to eliminate those who defied the Church. In the first document, John Wycliffe claims that the Church is contradicting itself. People should be forgiven by God, not by money, and should do so through helping the needy instead of buying the indulgences. The Blood Sucking Behavior Of Hirudo The Blood Sucking Behavior of Hirudo Miguel Soto Professor Folkerts Pepperdine University 23 April 2014 Abstract Hirudo are well known for their blood sucking, fluid feeding behavior. The purpose of this experiment was to get a better understanding of Hirudo s blood feeding behavior; more specifically, the study was designed to answer the question: how do different volumes of blood affect Hirudo s thirst? By soaking a sponge with different volumes of cow blood and measuring the time it took for the Hirudo to attach to the blood soaked sponge, the experiment yielded results that help explain whether or not there was a connection between the amount of blood available to Hirudo for feeding and the time it takes Hirudo to attach to the blood source. The experiment was conducted using six Hirudo, with a total of ten different volumes of blood per sponge (ranging from 1mL to 10mL) and two trials done for each volume of blood. Data collected from the experiment was analyzed with the SPSS program and found that differences in attachment time for the various levels of blood in the sponge were significant at the .05 level. These results explain that Hirudo do in fact take significantly less time to attach to a blood source containing a higher volume of blood. This information can be helpful for medical practitioners who use Hirudo as an alternative form of medicine. • 19. The Sheep Reflection Explanation: Jesus continued speaking to the people and explained that while only thieves climb over the wall of the sheepfold, the shepherd enters through the door. And when he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out, they follow him because they know his voice. But they would not follow a stranger because they would not know his voice. But the people did not understand what he meant by this parable, so Jesuscontinued, saying that he was the Door of the sheep. Thieves came before, but the sheep did not know their voice and did not follow them. Those thieves came to steal and kill and destroy, but Jesus, the Door, came to bring salvation and abundant life. Jesus continued, saying that he was the Good Shepherdand gave his life for his sheep. But the hired servant who does not own the sheep or care for the sheep leaves when the wolf comes. And the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. But the Good Shepherd knows his sheep and his sheep know him. And as he knew the Father, so the Father knew him. And he has other sheep of other folds that he will bring into one fold, and he will lay down his life for them. And the Father loves him because he lays down his life of himself, no one taking it from him. He has the power to lay it down and to take it again. And that was the commandment he had received from his Father. Then the Jews were again divided because of him, some accusing him of demon possession, and others arguing that a devil could not open the eyes of the blind, as Jesus had so recently done. Application: In this passage, Jesus is explaining to the people about the shepherd, the sheepfold, and the sheep. This is considered to be the only parable in the book of John, and perhaps it does not even qualify as a parable at all. Either way, it is a beautiful, encouraging picture of the way that Jesus cares for us, his sheep, even to the point of laying down his life for us. Jesus is our Shepherd, he leads us and guides us and cares for us. Sheep are very stupid creatures and need a lot of tending; so we are wayward humans needing much care and watching. But Christ is not only the shepherd; he is the door itself. We enter into life and safety through him. It is not through as through something that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid Tale Essay It is necessary for the government to impose a certain amount of power and control of its citizens in order for a society to function properly. However, too much power and control in a society eliminates the freedom of the residents, forbidding them to live an ordinary life. In the dystopian futuristic novel, The Handmaids Tale, Margaret Atwooddemonstrates the theme of power and control through an oppressive society called the Republic of Gilead. The government established power and control through the use of the wall, military control, the salvaging, the particicution, and gender. The dead bodies of those who have committed acts against the government hang on a structure called the Wall. The Wall is a method to implement fear on the citizens. Offred describes the purpose of the wall when she states, We stop, together as of on signal and stand to loook at the bodies. It doesn t matter if we look. Were supposed to look: this is what they are there for, hanging on the wall. Sometimes they ll be there for days, until there s a new batch, so as many people as possible will have a chance to see them (Atwood 40). The wall is a symbol of sin and it creates fear and force in the Republic of Gilead. It is a warning to the citizens of the punishment for disobeying the rules. The people that hang on the Wall have committed atrocities and must be made into examples, for the rest (Atwood 42). McKie uses several literary techniques such as statistics, case studies and emotive language in his article to not only communicate the cruel and unjustifiable nature of animal testing, but also the necessity we humans have for it; while experimenting on animals can be considered immoral, it s still a much better alternative than using humans. Emotive language is used several times throughout the article. McKie describes the marmosets as being no bigger than cats. The reader assumes from what McKie wrote about animal testing that the researchers must be callous individuals who are indifferent to animal suffering, but in truth they have an innate love of animals. McKie provides evidence of this by describing how they end up knitting hammocks for the animals and having favourites. He mentions an interview with a King s College technician which supports his evidence. A different employee also claimed that researching on marmosets had allowed them to develop medicines which have allowed patients to run their lives normally. Prior to King s College s experiments on marmosets, Parkinson s patients were a mass of uncontrollable movement, jerking and waving their hands and arms. McKie convinces the reader of why, while animal testing can be seen as unethical and wrong, it still is very important in the medical field. I feel that the life of a human has greater value than that of an animal, and that in this case the means justifies the end. By sacrificing hundreds of animals for experiments we end up saving thousands of humans. Throughout his article, McKie uses a great variety of phrases and techniques to strikingly portray the reality of animal testing and the lesser known activities which happen behind the scenes. He powerfully communicates both the negative and positive features of using animals in experiments without definitively taking a side, thus he lets us form our own opinions on the morality of animal testing. • 30. The Performance Factor As My Dependent Variable The Performance factor as my dependent variable in this research proposal can be for each of the boxers utilizing the orthodox/southpaw position, observing the quantity of triumphs against an orthodox/southpaw adversary. Age: the average age for an active professional boxer ranges from 22 40 years Opponent s stance: this could either be southpaw or orthodox yet this data directs the choice of evaluating performance in a boxing match (win/lose/draw). Ratings or Rankings: base on the rule that a boxer has been dormant for over a year, won t be incorporated into the rankings, unless he has a match formally booked. Every boxer is positioned on the outcomes they have accomplished in their own particular weight division. A boxer can t be positioned in a particular weight division until he has contended in that division.. Diverse/Different weight classes: Separating boxers into divisions guarantees reasonable BOUTS. For instance, a contender who measures more than 200 pounds has more drive behind his punch, while a boxer who weighs 140 pounds will probably be quicker and more light footed than the heavier boxer. While weight classes were initially isolated into eight divisions, the confining classes today are separated to 17 divisions, permitting contenders to be all the more unequivocally coordinated with their weight partners. Number of fights involved: Mileage in boxing is not controlled by matches, but rather by harm sustained. So 5 dangerous battles may be a boxer s whole ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparing the Presentation of War in the Oliver and Branagh Film Versions of Henry the Fifth Many films have been made of Shakespeare s play, Henry V . The two I am analysing are by Laurence Olivier (1944) and Kenneth Branagh (1988). They are made for very different audiences with different aims. Although they seem very different, in some ways, Branagh s version used many techniques of Olivier s. Both productions were performed to communicate the director s feelings on war to the audience and were performed when war had played a part in recent history. Olivier s version is very pro war in that he glorifies war but at the same time it lacks realism so that it was not too close to the reality that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The spirit of whose ancestors it has been humbly attempted to recapture. This is intended to make the audience feel proud to be fighting for England as their ancestors did. Being produced during the Second World War, many of the viewers may have had relatives out in battle. They had no clear idea of the reality due to the lack of technology and communication. The light hearted view of the battles reassured the audience. It is shown very patriotically and heroically so the audiences would feel good about the war and have felt proud to be English. The French in this film may have represented the Germans in the war as the enemy. In the battle the enemy is shown as evil to make the audience feel they re doing the right thing fighting evil. Branagh s film was set many years later when society was more immune to shocking films and television programmes. He presents a dynamic king duped into fighting a bloody, vicious war whose victory is undone within a generation. Olivier s version is quite pro war whereas Branagh s version seems very anti war. This film portrays his negative attitude to war by emphasising the realism of the battle. The gore and realistic fighting will have shocked the audience and may have allowed them to consider the conditions in Vietnam. For example in the battle of Agincourt, the close up individual fighting will have made ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The relationship between the research questions and supporting methods, which are later explained in detail, is illustrated as follows: Indonesia is currently a democratic country with three tiers of government: central government; provincial government; and local government. At the lower level, there are 34 provinces and 508 (as of 2014) local governments. There are two types of local government across Indonesia: 1) Kabupaten (district), and 2) Kota (city). In the past (before Reformasi), provincial and local governments were simply an extension of the central government at the regional and local level. Government policies and programs were determined by central government. • 33. What Are The Positive And Negative Benefits Of Worshipping... McKenna Werner Professor Henry THEO 282 29 November 2017 Hinduism Research Paper Shiva is one of Hinduism s Supreme Beings, the god of the destroyer of evil and the transformer within the Hindu Trimurti, that also includes Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva is known as the Lord who is half woman, thus implying Shiva is androgynous for there is a masculine Shiva and a feminine Shiva that are together as one, known as ardhavari ishvara. Shiva as ardhavari ishvara is one of many examples of androgyny of Hindu gods in the Vedic literature. From scholarly analysis, androgyny of Hindu gods, with the focus of this paper on Shiva as ardhavari ishvara, creates a positive aspect with the presence of non gender conformity of the divine within the Hindu faith system. This also causes problems and confusion from the Western world perspective and within the Hindu worshipping communities in the that this lack of gender conformity can lead to the mislabeling of the identity of Hindu worshippers and the divine. This paper will strive to discuss the positive and negative benefits of worshipping androgynous gods, especially in today s society where there are still gender inequalities, misinterpretations and many varying definitions surrounding what constitutes gender within social context or even religion. Most other religions require followers to refer to their God with gendered terms, but this is an interesting and positive quality that the Hinduism faith does not adhere to. Shiva is a part of ... • 34. Archimedes Of Syracuse And The Current State Of Computing As long as the field of mathematics has existed, people have been searching for shortcuts to eliminate the monotony and difficulty of calculating figures accurately. As a result, human beings began to develop new technologies to simplify this process. In ancient history, the abacus was a useful device in calculating simple numbers requiring addition and subtraction. In the seventeenth century, the first mechanical calculators were able to perform multiplication and division through repetitions of addition and subtraction. Calculators were then programmed in order to multiply and divide automatically. From these early devices emerged the first computers and calculators, which were originally intended to calculate figures. Now, modern computers are expected to perform a variety of functions, outside of calculations, quickly and effectively. However, back in the time of abacuses, an ancient Greek mathematician was discovering the formulas and primitive mechanical devices that have evolved into the current state of computing technology. Archimedesof Syracuse was born in 287 BC in Syracuse, Sicily. Not much is known about his early life or his parents, but it is believed he studied alongside his mathematical contemporaries Conon of Samos and Eratosthenes of Cyrene in Egypt. In 212 BC, he was killed by the invading Roman soldiers when he refused to comply while solving geometrical problems in the dirt. Comparing The United Kingdom And Mexico Comparing the US with the United Kingdom and Mexico When this assignment became available I had a good poke around looking at comparisons for many different countries. It was interesting to see the differences and similarities, and I had a hard time choosing which two countries to choose for my comparison. In the end, I chose the UK and Mexico because these were places I had visited before. For convenience, the graphical comparison for these countries is included at the end of the post, but I will refer to the numbers in the text. To begin with the UK, the one statistic I found interesting was its Power Distance score of 35. Although I expected it to be somewhat close the score for the US (40), I actually thought that the UK would score higher, perhaps around 50. Since the UK still has royalty and hereditary titles, I had expected some of that more historical respect for power distance to filter through to everyday culture. Apparently not! Another couple of statistics that were interesting to me, when taken together, were the UK s Long Term Orientation and Indulgence scores. At a score 51, the UK clearly favors long term thinking to a greater extent than the US (26), however, their Indulgence score is on par with our own; 69 to our 68. While I realize the two scores are not directly related to each other, I m surprised to not see a stronger correlation between a view for the future and a culture of restraint. For Mexico, two traits I found interesting were the scores for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They weren t travelling hundreds of miles across the globe to simply experience life in the New World . Uprooting a family was the decision that changed the course of many European citizens lives. Upon arriving in America, depending on where you settled life would be very different from your mother nation, and different from how other colonies lived; but also, very similar to the lives of others within the American colonies. Gender in the colonies was a demographic that needed to be diverse, without men and women, you cannot breed to create more human life. Gender was an issue that as time went on, the colonies better understood how diversity could be the one and only tipping point towards their survival. In the southern colonies such as Roanoke, initially, only men were sent over. These men were selected as the cream of the crop from England. Moreover, it correctly asserts that Bridget s search for meaning and order in her life exemplifies Everywoman. For example, when Bridget thinks she s pregnant, she pictures Daniel rushing home from work, thrilled to find the two of us pink and glowing in the bath, and, in years to come, being incredibly impressive at parent /teacher evenings (100). Fielding creates irony here by highlighting the discrepancy between Bridget s idyllic vision a premature plan to be an impressive parent and her neurotic behavior. Still, women can relate, and the passage contributes to Fielding s development of Bridget as Everywoman. In laughing at Bridget, readers laugh at themselves; it is easier to see the folly in another s lofty plan. Similarly, Bridget often pictures Daniel and her living in the context of an ad, running along beaches together with tiny offspring in manner of Calvin Klein ad, being trendy Smug Married (113) or sipping pints in matching striped T shirts and watching the sun set over the sea (113, 121). The reasoning behind this marketing strategy is that customers will buy and become aware of the new product due to its lower price in the marketplace relative to rivals. Think Piece #1 To me interpersonal communication describes the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages between two different people. Joseph DeVito states that interpersonal communication is inevitable, irreversible, and unrepeatable due to these things effective communication is a necessary skill for us to function in our day to day lives (p. 20). Therefore, I have created a theory for interpersonal communication that goes as follows; To experience effective communication you must understand: your culture, the other person s culture, and how to listen effectively. By knowing these three things you can consistently avoid misunderstandings and promote understanding in your interpersonal and intercultural relationships. The first point in my theory is that you can better your skills as an interpersonal communicator by better understanding your own culture. DeVito states that there are. several major cultural distinctions that are crucial for more effective communication they are: individualism or collectivism, high or low context, high or low power distance, masculinity or femininity, high or low ambiguity tolerance, long or short term orientation, and indulgent or (p. 34). To be able to understand your or anyone else s culture you must be able to understand the ways that these things affect communication.
