Teaching Unit 15 – Lesson 13 HOPES AND FEARS 63
Look at the photos on p. 98. Describe what you see.
Make a list of other things teenagers worry about.
Read the following report about teenagers’ worries and fears.
A survey into adolescents’ fears reveals some surprises – but also some things that never change.
Stress – once considered an adult ‘disease’ – tops the list of worries for secondary schoolchildren.
More and more homework and exams are troubling children as young as 11. And 40 percent of
pupils are critical of teachers, saying that they want ‘more help’ and ‘calmer classes’.
These results appear to show that children care deeply about their own education, though
surprisingly half of the students questioned say they have already decided not to go to university.
It seems that bullying in or around school is still a major problem, one that many say schools
don’t do enough about. A third of 10-15 year-olds say they have been bullied at some point in
their school life.
40 percent of teenagers worry about friendships, 30 percent worry about the future, and a third are
concerned about staying healthy.
Do exercises 5 b, 5 c and 5 d on p. 98.
Read about five teenagers talking about their biggest hopes and fears.
Shannon: My biggest fear is getting bullied at school. There’s a couple of lads and a gang of
girls that are always picking on somebody – they’re either too quiet or too loud, too fat or too
thin, too stupid or too clever. It’s so stupid. It could be me next. And my biggest hope is that we’ll
stop all the wars going on at the moment. Yeah, I think that’s it.
Javier: I think I’m most afraid of our country’s economy. My dad is a businessman, and he’s
kind of worried that he’s gonna lose his business. And then I don’t know what we’ll do. And I
really hope that I can go to study English in the United States or Britain, even just for a little time.
It’s my dream, I guess.
Jao: My big fear is the stress at my school. We have so many tests and homework every night. I
worry about not passing the exams. And my hope in future is … I will get married and have a
nice family, and a house and a car. It’s not so much to hope for, I think!
Laura: What is my biggest fear … Oh, I don’t have too many. Just being the ugliest among my
sisters and cousins. That I’m not going to get any taller. That soon I’ll be an adult and have too
much responsibility. No, I’m just joking. Maybe, I think really that my biggest fear is getting
sick, because I have a friend who got very sick and it’s no fun. I hope in the future that I can do
something to help people and animals. Especially animals, I think.
Yasmin: I worry a lot about green things – you know, wasting energy and global warming and
climate change. A lot of my friends agree, but it’s older people, the adults, who don’t seem to
care about these things. And my hope … I want to go to university. In the future I’d like to work
for the United Nations.
Complete the table with each speaker’s biggest hope and fear.
