Teaching Unit 8 – Lesson 11 LOVE 56
Casablanca
Casablanca was released in 1942. It is an American romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart
and Ingrid Bergman. Set during World War Two, it tells the story of a man who must choose
between being with the woman he loves or helping her escape from the enemy. Casablanca won
the Oscar for best film and is recognized as an all-time classic movie.
Here’s the story:
Woman 1: I guess my favourite romantic filmof all times is Casablanca. Yes, I know it’s old and in
black-in-white – but it’s just a great love story! It’s about two people – an American man called Rick
and a woman called Ilsa – who fall in love in Parisin 1940, just during the war. The German army is
coming into Paris and because Rick is American, he has to leave – but he refuses to leave without
her.
Rick: I won’t leave without you!
Woman 1: They arrange to meet at the railway station. But Ilsa doesn’t show up, and Rick leaves
alone. He goes to Morocco, to Casablanca, and opens a club called Café Americain. And then, one
day, Ilsa appearsat the club. She’swith herhusband,Victor Laszlo. He’s a well-known leader of the
Resistance. Anyway, Ilsa explains why she stayed behind in Paris.
Ilsa: I thought my husband was dead – but he wasn’t, he was still alive! So I couldn’t go with you!
Woman 1: But it’s dangerous in Casablanca, and Laszlo and Ilsa have to go to Portugal, where
they’ll be safe. But Ilsa realizes she loves Rick, too. She doesn’t know what to do.Of course Rick still
loves her, but he knowsthat she has to be with Laszlo, to help him with his work. There’s only one
more plane to Portugal, and at the airport, Rick meets Ilsa and talks to her.
Rick: Ilsa, you have to get on the plane and go with Laszlo! You have to!
Ilsa: Oh, Rick!
Woman 1: And then there are some great lines –
Rick: If you don’t get on that plane, you’ll regret it – maybe not now, maybe not tomorrow, but soon,
and for the rest of your life!
Woman 1: And then Rick tells Laszlo what had happened.
Rick: Listen, Laszlo, Ilsa and I were in love before, in Paris. She thought you were dead, but then she
found out she was wrong. And we met here again, by accident. But it’s all over between Ilsa and me –
OK?
Woman 1: And Ilsa agrees to go with Laszlo.
Ilsa: OK Rick – I’ll go with him! But please, be careful!
Woman 1: And so Ilsa and Laszlo leave on the plane, it takesoff and Rick stays in Casablanca. And
that’s the end, it’s old and corny, but it’s just great!

different in your grandparents’ days? How would they have kept in touch?
