Teaching Unit 19 – Lesson 14 HAPPINESS 67
Look at the pictures on p. 104. What do you think ‘happiness’ means for the people in the
pictures?
Two students from a British school are doing a survey about happiness. Here it is:
Joanna: Excuse me, we’re doing a survey for our school magazine. Have you got a minute?
Woman 1: Sure. Go ahead.
Joanna: We’re trying to find out more about happiness. What’s happiness for you?
Woman 1: That’s easy. My children.I have a three-year-old boy and five-year-old girl and they
mean the world to me. I love it after a long happy day out with all the family and you finally get
themto bed and then you go in half an hour later and there they are sleeping – like little angels.
Part of me wants to go and wake themup but the sensible side always stops me. I mean, it’s also
nice to have a bit of time for just me and my husband too.
Philip: What’s happiness for you?
Woman 2: Cooking.
Philip: Cooking!
Woman 2: Well, baking really. I’mnever happier than when I’mbaking cakes and biscuits and
that sort of thing. And I love seeing the look on people’s faces when they eat them. It makes me
feel all warminside. About a month ago my old oven broke down.I was so depressed. I had to go
out and buy a new one. Two days without baking is two days too long.
Joanna: When are you most happy?
Boy 1: When I get the top mark in a test.Knowing all that hard was worth it. You can’t beat it.
Joanna: Can you tell us what happiness is for you?
Man 1: That’s a tough question. It’s so many things. Let me think. I know. It’s a long hot bath
after a hard day. Just lying in there soaking in the water – maybe with a good CD playing in the
background – it’s heaven. You can let your mind go blank. It can also be a great time to sort out
some of your everyday problems without getting too stressed out about them.
Philip: We’re doing this survey about happiness. Can we ask you a few questions?
Girl 1: Certainly.
Philip: Can you tell us what happiness means for you, when you’re happy?
Girl 1: Easy. Being with my friends and laughing. I’m really lucky. I’ve got a great group of
friends and we always have so much fun together. I don’t know where time goes when I’m with
them. It just flies. We don’t even have to do anything special – just hang out at our houses or in
the park. But we’re always laughing.
Philip: So friendship is the most important thing for you?
Girl 1: Yes, I think so. When you make a good friend, you’ve got a friend for life. The other day I
bumped into an old friend who I hadn’t seen for two years. After five minutes it was like we’d
never been apart.
Joanna: Hi, can we ask you a question for our school magazine?
Boy 2: Sure.
Joanna: When are you happy?
Boy 2: Easy. When I’mreading a good book. You know, one of those books that you just can’t put
down. I love it. I just get lost to the world. It feels great.
Which of the things in the interview about happiness do you agree/disagree with?
HOMEWORK: Do exercises 3 b, 3 c and 5 b on p. 104.
