-the kitchen utensil i chose is a kitchen knife
-silvery smooth blade which is made from stainless steel

-decide the light source, the light must comes from a place which will beautify the
whole drawing

looks tidier and nicer

-create the basic outline, draw it onto the paper in a slowly and softly motion by using
a HB pencil so that it wont be too hard to erase
-holding the pencil at an acute angle from the paper helps to maintain the drawing is

-by using a 2B and 6B pencil, darken the outlines gently
-edit the sketching until im satisfied with it
-start the shading part by shading the area away from light and slowly build up the
tone
-as working towards the light, gradually ease the pressure on the pencil
-patiently repeat the process several times as this will realize the whole drawing
-use finger to rub the darken part so that the black colour will be balanced
-by using an eraser, rub off the unuse area(144)

essay. Sketch is usually a prescribed part of the studies for art students. It is a basis
for a final work. For me, sketch is also a method of recording or working out ideas.
While doing assignments, i will need a lot of creative ideas. Hence, I always bring
along a sketch book so that I can simply sketch out my idea whenever idea comes
out in my mind. I’m writing a process essay about sketching a kitchen utensil.(125)
The kitchen utensil I chose is a kitchen knife. It has a silvery smooth blade which is
made from stainless steel. People usually use stainless steel kitchen knife as it is
light and inexpensive. The blade has two sides, one side is thin and sharp while the

I decided which angle of the kitchen knife would be easier to draw. After that, I
decided to make use of the light ray where the light must comes from a place which
will beautify the whole drawing. I also used a ruler to draw the straight thicker portion

5. of the blade and also the handle so that it looks more neat and nicer. Before I started
my sketch, I cleared my workspace because this helped to clear my mind. I placed
the kitchen knife on my working space in the best angle carefully so that I would be
able to draw it easily. Then, I started the sketch.(128)
I created the basic outline, drew it onto the paper in a slowly and softly motion by
using a HB pencil so that it won’t be too hard to erase. I held the pencil at an acute
angle from the paper to maintain the drawing light and soft. I redrew the part before
erasing it off, so that I wouldn’t make the same mistake. By using a 2B pencil, I
darken the outlines gently. I edited the sketching until I’m satisfied with it. Then, I
started the shading part with a 8B pencil by shading the area away from light and
slowly build up the tone. As working towards the light, I gradually eased the pressure
on the pencil. After that, I patiently repeated the process several times as this will be
realized my whole drawing. I used my finger to rub the darken part so that the black
colour will be balanced. By using an eraser, I rubbed off the unused area.(166)
Although this is an easy 20-minutes sketch, I used almost one hour to finish it. This
was because the tricky curve near it’s tip and also the shadings really gave me a
hard time. I kept redrawing the curve because it seemed a little crooked and unreal.
I’d used about 15 minutes to draw the curve. For the shading part, I edited it for 25
minutes until I’m satisfied with it. After I’d finished the whole sketch, I was tired but I
felt a sense of accomplishment. I will do it again because it is a quite good
experience for me.(102)
