- 1. ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT 1 DRAFT (NOT FINAL OBVIOUSLY) Introduction - A hastily executed drawing, a rough design, plan or draft. - Sketching will be useful to quickly get a rough idea of what I will be up against and what I will need to do to overcome whatever is given. - My process essay is about sketching a kitchen utensil, specifically the Kitchen Shears. I need to outline the process of sketching said utensil, step by steps and progress. Observation - The weapon I have chosen is the Kitchen Shears, not to be mistaken with scissors. - Sight: They look like scissors. - Touch: They feel like scissors, but the shears have a larger handle on one side used to accommodate more fingers. - Taste: When clean, they taste like just about any clean metallic or stainless steel object. After used to cut something it will taste like whatever it just cut. - Smell: When clean, they smell like just about any clean metallic or stainless steel object. After used it will smell like whatever it just cut. - Sound: SNIP SNIP - Kitchen Shears are used just like scissors, to cut. They are usually used to cut vegetable and various thin objects. - I have chosen the Kitchen Shears because I use them a lot. Drawing Tools - For shading, I will be using different types of pencils based on their softness. Harder pencils like the H series will be used for initial light sketching and lighter shading while softer pencils like an 8B will be used to darken large areas quickly. - Other stationary/tools I might consider using will be rulers for straighter lines and a camera to capture a still shot of the said utensil so the angle of viewing will be always the same to avoid any confusions. - For starters, I do not have an ideal workspace to work on. All the space on my table is taken up by my large mouse pad and keyboard and there are nowhere else I can place them. So working in a tight environment is not a problem as I am already used to it. Further Details - I may explore further options for shading; one good example will be using charcoal. Just like pencils, there are different forms of charcoal, from hard to soft. Soft charcoal are smudgy and will be ideal for creating very balanced and smoothly transitioned shading. - Lighting plays an important role in a drawing as they, combined with shadows, visually define an object. Firstly, I have to determine the source of lighting because the shadows casted have to be on the other end, otherwise it wouldn’t make any sense.
- 2. - If mistakes were made, I would prefer to recreate my sketch instead of going on with it unless the mistake is very minimal. Having a cleaner sketch would make it look like I have a pre-defined goal and know what I am doing. Conclusion - The sketch only took up to 2 hours, but it was the preparation process that took the most time. Having the need to gather all the tools needed for this sketch is mind boggling as I do not have access to any of the items. - I heave a sigh of relief after completing the sketch because I now know that there is one less assignment I need to complete. - I would love to repeat this because it sure is an interesting way to study about a certain object, in this case the Kitchen Shears, and learn to draw better which will be great for future work that require drawing, but I wouldn’t like to have to write an essay again.
