June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. Acknowledgements
We would like to acknowledge everyone who helped out in this project by
giving ideas and more. Without their help, this assignment would be harder and
perhaps even impossible for us to complete in time.
Moving on, we would like to thank Mr. Shankar by guiding and teaching us
through out this module. With his lectures, we understood many social psychology
concepts and manage to apply them properly in our assignments and daily life.
Also, we would like to show gratitude towards our family for giving us the
support and helping us persevere throughout this whole assignment.
Lastly, we would like to thank our group mates for taking time to write the
script, film, edit the video, prepare the slides and the report. Without each other, this
project would be impossible to be completed.
3
4. Introduction
In a group of 4-5 students, we are required to conduct a social psychology
conceptual video implementing 5 different social psychology concepts and further
explain it during a presentation. This project would help students identify and
understand social psychology concepts and it’s relevance to our daily life. Also, this
project taught us to use the concepts that we’ve learnt through Mr. Shankar’s
teachings in class.
A few concepts are used in the story, and the story is acted out by group
members and a few other people. Before we began to film, we had to discuss and
come out with the story line and the script. The concepts we have applied in the video
are Racism, Attributions, ABC model of Attitude, Social Influence and Egoism.
Throughout this assignment, we manage to further our understanding of those
concepts in a social context.
4
5. Method
Apparatus/Materials used:
• DSLR was used to film the videos
• Computers to film voice overs and edit the film
• Other props such as papers and books were also used
Procedure :
1. 22nd January 2016, we conducted our first meeting with all our group
mates. During our first meeting, we discussed about the storyline and
concepts we wanted to apply for the video.
2. 26th January 2016, script was finalized and roles were assigned to each
group mate.
3. 27th January 2016, all group members began filming the video. After
filming was done, a few task were divided among ourselves. We were
assigned to either edit the video, create presentation slides or write the
report.
4. 30th January 2016, we had our last meeting to make final edits to our
report, video and presentation slides.
5
6. Discussion
During this assignment, it is crucial to have discussions to finalize what
we had to do. So, we discuss about the storyline and the script.
4.1 Storyline
Alisa and Siew are colleagues of different races. Alisa is Malay and Siew is Chinese.
Siew would always complain about the things that Alisa does in the office to Michael
because Siew isn’t fond of Malays since she was little (Racism). This is because she
grew up in a Chinese populated town, and everyone else there doesn’t really like
Malays too (Social Influence). Michael have always been telling Siew to put her
personal feelings aside and not let it affect her work but she never listens.
There was this one time when Alisa was constantly absent from work. Siew did not
know why Alisa wasn’t showing up, but she just jumps to a conclusion where Alisa is
just lazy and doesn’t want to work (Dispositional Attribution), but the truth is, Alisa’s
mother had just passed away, and she has been busy with the funeral. Abu has been
helping Alisa cover her work while she was gone and it was because of Abu, Siew
found out about Alisa’s loss.
Siew felt bad for Alisa after finding out. Siew attended the funeral . She thought that
Alisa would’ve felt better (ABC model of Attitude). Siew felt bad for treating Alisa
this way all these while, she has been helping Alisa at work because Alisa has been
having trouble coping ever since her mother’s passing. Siew does this to help herself
feel better about the way she treated Alisa before (Egoism).

7. 4.2 Script
Character List
Siew - Joey
Alisa - Renee
Michael - David
Abu - Jack
Scene 1
Siew : It’s so tiring having to work with Alisa. She would always have so many
problem when it comes to doing her job. She’s always getting things wrong and I
would have to take the blame for it.
Michael : I’ve seen Alisa’s work, it has always been good, minimal error and always
on time.
Siew : I think you might have seen someone else’s work. Alisa is not like that.
She’s malay and they never do their work well.
Michael : I think you are letting your personal feelings towards Malays affect your
work. You shouldn’t do that.
Siew : I’m not letting it affect my work. I’m just saying, I rather not work with her.
All my life, I grew up in a Chinese populated town, we’ve all survived and done well
without Malays in our town. I don’t see why this company can’t survive without
Alisa.
Michael : I’m just saying Siew, you should keep those thoughts to yourself, if Alisa
hears you, she won’t be very happy.
(Alisa walks by and looks at them)
(She then walks away, looking upset.)
Michael : See what I mean.
Siew : So what? I can say whatever I want. I don’t like Malays and I certainly do
not wish to work with them.
(Michael shakes his head and runs after Alisa)
Michael : Alisa, wait up!
7
8.
Alisa : Hi Michael, is there anything I can help you with?
Michael : Not exactly, but I just wanted to apologize on behalf of Siew. She’s a nice
person, its just that.. She can be a little racist sometimes.
Alisa : Oh! That, don’t worry about that. I wont take it to heart.
Michael : Okay, again I’m sorry about that.
(Alisa smiles and goes back to work)
Scene 2
// Few days later //
(Alisa calls Abu and notifies him that she won’t be at work for a few days)
Alisa : Hey Abu, I won’t be able to attend work for the next few days. My mother
just passed away and I really need to be with my family right now.
Abu : Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear! I’ll pass the message to the manager and I will
try my best to cover for you. Please take care of yourself, Alisa.
Alisa : Thank you so much , Abu. I’ll see you soon.
Abu : Okay, bye.
Scene 3
// The next day //
Siew : Look what I meant about Alisa being lazy?!! She wasn’t here yesterday, and
she isn’t here today too. I doubt she’ll even be here tomorrow or the day after.
Michael : Siew, don’t jump to a conclusion like that maybe something important
came up. Maybe she fell ill and the doctors advised her to stay home and rest.
Siew : I’m sure Alisa got a little upset over something I said about her and decided
she did not want to work.
Abu : Siew, please stop talking about Alisa that way. She’s going through a
difficult time.
8
9. Siew : So what? We all go through hardships, she isn’t the only one.
Abu : Siew please stop. Her mother just passed away and she has to be with her
family. She would be in work if she could.
Siew : Oh. I’m so sorry. I feel so bad. Where is the funeral held at? I want to visit
her and pay my respect.
Scene 4
// Few days later //
Siew : Alisa, are you feeling better?
Alisa : Not really.
Siew : Okay, you take a break, let me help you with these.
Alisa : Don’t worry about me, I’ll have to put my family matters and feelings
aside at work. I’ll be fine.
Siew : No, no, I insist.
Michael : Looks like you’re starting to feel bad now.
Siew : Hmm…
9
10. 4.3 Concepts
Concept 1 : Racism
Racism is a discrimination towards a specific racial group
- Siew would always condemn and judge Alisa because she was Malay.
Concept 2 : Social Influence
Social influence is when a person’s thoughts is influence by another person.
-Siew mentioned that she grew up in a Chinese populated town and the people in the
town were fine working without other races, so she thinks that their company would
be okay without Alisa too
Concept 3: Attribution
Dispositional Attribution is when someone assumes that the cause of an action is
because of a person’s internal characteristics.
Situational Attribution is when someone assumes the cause of an action is due to
external factors.
- Siew assumes that Alisa was lazy when she didn't show up for work when Michael
thinks of the other possibilities such as Alisa being ill or something important
happened.
Concept 4 : ABC model of Attitudes
ABC model of attitudes determine the formation of an attitude
Affective is the emotional based component
Behavioral is the action based component
Cognitive is the knowledge based component
- Siew felt bad and upset that she was never nice towards Alisa, and always clouding
her judgment because she was racist ( Affective Component ). Then she attended
Alisa’s mother funeral to show empathy ( Behavioural Component ). Siew thought
that if she showed up at the funeral, it would have helped Alisa feel better ( Cognitive
Component )
Concept 5: Egoism
Egoism is suppose to help reduce personal distress. It’s a hypothesis saying that
all of our actions are done in a certain way to justify our self-interest.
- Siew started treating Alisa better so she will be able to overcome her regrets of
treating Alisa a certain way.
