1. COMPARE / CONTRAST ESSAY – COMPARING JAMES BOND MOVIES
As movies these days hit the cinema like a tsunami, pretty much a lot of us
haveall wondered about thefamous agent 007 who always never fails to keep
his audience in awe of his acting and storyline. Therefore, nevertheless, James
Bond - is a Britishseries of spy films based on thefictional characterof MI6agent
James Bond, "007", who originally appeared in a series of books by IanFleming.
It is one of the longest continually-running film series in history, having been in
on-going production from 1962 to the present (with a six-year hiatus between
1989 and 1995). Along the years, the main character of James Bond changed
with the appearance of his characters in each movies varied as well.
Therefore, the chosen movies to compare about will be Tomorrow Never Dies
(1997) acted by Pierce Brosnan and Skyfall (2012) acted by Daniel Craig.
Tomorrow Never Dies is the 18th spy film in the James Bond series, and a story
about James Bond heads to stop a media mogul's plan to induce war
between China and the UK in order to obtain exclusive global media
coverage whereas Skyfall is the twenty-third James Bond film produced by
Eon Productions. It was distributed by MGM and Sony. It features Daniel Craig
in his third performance and portrays about Bond's mission is to keep a
computer drive that has a list of British agents from being used against them.
He chases the man who has it and they have a brawl on top of a train.
Basically, all storyline varies in each series of agent 007 and so, being aware
2. that each plot has its own climax, it can be compared to say that both
Tomorrow Never Dies and Skyfall movie aim is to save the good and get rid of
the bad. So in these two story, Bond in the year 1997 the movie takes place
more of to in China and Bond in the year 2012 the movie takes place more in
England itself. Compensating however, Bond is skilled and well trained, evident
in gun fights. Combat mastery and a sense of action is yet more appeal for the
male. And not all women could be immune to his charms and wit.
Playing the role of heroine in Tomorrow Never Dies, Dato’ Michelle Yeah plays
as Colonel Wai Lin who is a master of martials and is a spy for the Chinese
People’s External Security Force in China. Whereas in Skyfall, Bérénice Lim
Marlohe is a French actress who plays a role as Severine who is Raoul Silva's
associate. In here, we can see a comparison that as the series differs with
different stories, heroines in each series play different roles as not to be close
with the hero at first, but gradually they do get close with Bond. But in Skyfall
instead, Severine get killed by thevillain, Raoul Silvajust because she witnessed
an assassination. In Tomorrow Never Dies, Wai Lin and Bond had perception
that both of them were assigned to kill each but as they got to know each
other well, a mutual feeling towards both party developed. In here, we can
also see a comparison of the director has decided to segregate the
character’s background story.
3. The next comparison between these 2 movies will be the villains. Villain in
Tomorrow Never Dies is played by Jonathan Pryce as Elliot Carver who is a
psychopathic , vainand manipulativeman, Elliot Carversearches out themost
dramatic ways to hold a media monopoly - even if it means creating the news
himself. He is the editor-in-chief as well as owner of the newspaper "Tomorrow",
which has a distinctive reputation for stirring trouble and reporting mayhem.
Carver is politically connected, well spoken and certainly well informed. His
connections and industry stretch well beyond his public endeavours into
government, mafia, even the military. While in Skyfall, Raoul Silva played by
Javier Bardem is a vengeful man. He easily manipulates the people who work
for him and takes pride in his ability to exploit the digital age in order to dig up
dirt on the British intelligence forces. He concocts a plan that undermines the
entire British Security Service in order to catch the attention of MI6's chief.
Indeed, Silva will stop at nothing to see the death of M, and cares not if he
loses his own life in the process. So, in this 2 stories of villains, Raoul is more cruel
compared to Elliot Carver because in order to get what he wants to be done,
Raoul does not hesitate a bit to execute it before hand.
4. Gadgetsthat areused in Tomorrow never Dies compared toSkyfall has a huge
difference. As years gone by, with the new modern era of technology, James
Bonds gadgets keeps improving in the sense of its character that implyies to
the storyline. Like in tomorrow never dies, Bond uses gadgets like magnetic
grenade, Russian migs, stealth boat and sea driller. These kind of gadgets they
are more technical compared the gadgets that Bond uses in Skyfall. As
example, Skyfall is a return to greatness and quality. Director Sam Mendes’
Skyfall is a delight because it’s not a gadget smorgasbord. Mendes
deliberately doesn’t equip Bond with every Sony gadget coming out to push
back against the tech marketing. Skyfall focuses on having good storytelling
with believable characters that often never places gadgetry as the be-all to
saving the world. The secret to a good Bond movie is knowing how to balance
the amount of gadgets that appear and Skyfall does it so well that makes the
whole movie to be so much more than a spy movie.
In a nutshell, James Bond movies are all wonderful spy movie series that one
should never miss watching every series of it. Learning back about his
background and how each story has its own aim of objective to portray
explains so clear out to the audience that they can never be bored of. As an
agent 007 fan, his movies are worth watching.
