Let us move on to another learning experience about two
main kinds of final intonation patterns and its uses.
In this module, I have prepared exercises for you to do to
improve your skill using intonation. Without it, it’s impossible to
understand the expressions and thoughts that go with words. At the
same time, you can learn how to appreciate the beauty of the human
voice when it comes to expressing emotions.

We can use our voice to “act” out or dramatize a story by varying
the intonation, tempo, and volume of what we say.
Intonation is the rise and fall of the voice when a person speaks.
The voice rises in a stressed syllable or word. It falls in an unstressed
syllable or word.
The two main kinds of final intonation patterns are:
1. falling – the pitch of the voice goes downward
2. rising – the pitch of the voice goes upward
The falling intonation is used at the end of:
1. a statement, command, or request;
2. a question which cannot be answered by yes or no; and
3. a tag question expressing certainty.
