Intonation is the rise and fall of your voice when we speak. Many times,
it’s just as important as our words in expressing what we want to say.
That’s why when we are learning English, we shouldn’t just learn what
to say, we should also learn how to say it.
This is important in English communication because sentences may
vary in meaning depending on the intonation. It also yields dynamics
on our speech and makes it more compelling to hear.
RISING FALLING

Two Basic
Intonation Patterns
RISING
Our voice is rising mostly at the end
of the sentence. Rising intonation
means awaiting the speaker to
continue talking and answering the
question. It is used with yes/no
questions and exclamations. Also
we use when we express doubt and
need confirmation.
FALLING
Falling intonation is very common in
English. While using rising in the
beginning of the sentence, we use
falling at the and of the sentence. It is
commonly found in statements,
commands and question words (wh).

RISING
You like animals don’t you?
Do you sell bananas?
She worked here, isn’t she?
FALLING
Write your order here.
I want to change my phone.
Put the documents on the box.
Neighbour: Congratulations Lisa! I think you will graduate from highschool in the end of this month.
Lisa: Thank you. I am very excited about it. I am very curious about the university life. There will be a
lot of fun things.
Neighbour: You are grown up now. You won’t be teenager anymore. Don’t forget to work hard in
the university.
Lisa: I know. I will work hard and I will be very successful. After my university, I will find a good job
for myself.
Neighbour: Come here Lisa! I know this is a little amount Money but I can only give this much.
Lisa: Oh, that is a surprise! Thank you very much!
This dialog will be written on the board. All students will write it to their notebooks. And they will
mark Falling and Rising intonations in the dialog. Best student will mark them on the board and all
other students will be learning.
