Emotional intelligence emerged in the 1990s in response to traditional IQ testing, which only measured performance and achievement. There are five key characteristics of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, managing emotions, self-motivation, empathy, and handling relationships. An analysis of incorporating drama into the existing curriculum found that it enabled students to substantially develop their personal, social, and emotional intelligence in domains like self-awareness, managing emotions, self-motivation, recognizing emotions in others, and building relationships.
