Elpahaba Wicked Dance Essay
For this part of the research, I went and saw the musical 'Wicked' at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London, where it shows several times a week.
This means that the costume I design and make needs to be very durable so that it can be used for every performance. The costume I am designing
and making is to replace Elpahaba's Act II dress, however I took note of her costumes in the first act as well, along with the rest of that cast's. I saw
that the rest of the cast's costumes were heavily decorated and colourful, whilst Elphaba's were mostly very plain, but in Act II, her dress is much
more elaborate. Up close, you can see that her dress incorporates lots of different colours, however I was seated in the circle, and the theatre was very
large ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, when designing my version of the costume I should make sure that the shape of it is a significant feature. The main colours throughout
the musical were emerald green and black, which are the colours most associated with evil and magic. The lighting throughout the theatre was all
emerald green, and most of Act II takes place in the 'Emerald City' where everything is green. For that reason, the costume I design should
incorporate some of these colours to fit the theme, but at the same time, the use of these colours should be limited so that Elphaba doesn't blend in
with the rest of the cast or the scenery, as she is one of two main characters and needs to stand out. Galinda, the other main character, wears a
costume that includes a great deal of sparkly embellishments. From where I was in the theatre, the details could not be seen, but whenever she was
under a spotlight, they reflected the light and gave off a magical effect. This could be seen from quite far back, so to those seated in the stalls it
would've been even more impressive. That being so, I should use a similar type of decoration in my designs because of it's success in Galinda's

Wicked: The Real Elphaba Essay
In Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West happen before the novel by L. Frank Baum, The
Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In Baum's novel of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, portrays the role of the Wicked Witch of the West being wicked. We have
no background or personal preference to understand her life of the Wicked Witch of the West (as known as Elphaba). But in Maguire's novel,Wicked:
the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
, shows how Elphaba traits of a monster are similar to a typical monster that portrays in people's
eye. Elphaba is an ideal model of what we see in a monster would be like: abnormal, scary looking, and blunt behavior. She is a target of gossip to
those who do not even know ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She could also go to the extreme trying to save animal civil rights because of what she believes in, even if it means to have no one to support her. She
was coldly rejected when she tried to ask the Wizard for assistance, but ended revolting against him to save the remaining animals that were tortured
and brutally killed. As you can tell, the image of the Wizard of Oz is not so welcoming compared to Maguire's novel versus Buam's novel. Elphaba
plays a very extraordinary female role compared to a traditional female role Galinda (as known as Glinda). Glinda was mean, conceited, rude,
sociable, pretty and popular woman in college, compared to Elphaba was ugly, an outcast, and unsociable with the students. Elphaba was able to
attend school and later be friends with Glinda and Boq, usually Wicked Witch does not have many friends, and tends to be living in loneliness and
dreadful life. Glinda attempts to make Elphaba and not be an outcast, but as a lovable Wicked Witch. It failed because of her blunt behavior and
personality. Even though Glinda was mean and conceited in a way, she surpassed it with her beauty and social skills, while Elphaba was always
criticized and look down at from the students. Glinda said, "Please, it is Galinda" and mocked her professor, Dr. Dillamond, "She could not bring
herself to call him sir. Not with that horrid goatee and the tatty waistcoat that looked but from some public house carpet" (Maguire 66). In contrast

Wicked Play Analysis
The play Wicked, written by American lyricist Stephen Schwartz, was a play that demonstrated several conflicts that a person went through during
their lifetime. Elphaba, the protagonist, was born with green skin because of a choice that her mother made. She had to deal with the fear and the
looks that people gave her because of her appearance. Elphaba dealt with the mockery of others during her years in school. When reading the play,
one could compare Elphaba's circumstances to discrimination or racism towards African Americans in the nineteen sixties. In college, she discovered
that she had magical powers that she could use for good. The people in the town of Oz stereotyped her and assumed she was a witch who wanted to
harm everyone because of her... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If students read this play, they could learn different lessons on how to approach certain situations throughout their lives. The playWicked displayed
several conflicts, stereotypes, and shows how one can overcome an obstacle in their lifetime, which are lessons students could learn by reading this
play. The play opens with the introduction of the first conflict that Elphaba was introduced to when she was born. Elphaba's mother made a bad choice
which resulted in her daughter having green skin. She had an affair with Elphaba's biological father, the Wizard of Oz. When her mother was alone, her
father came and gave her a green potion, not knowing of what the potion would have done to her. Elphaba was born soon after her affair, and she
had green skin. Her father was disgusted and confused as to why his daughter looked the way she did. Elphaba's father developed a hatred for her
because of the disability that her sister, Nessarose, was born with. She mentioned in the play that "He was so worried, he made our mother chew milk
flowers, day and night. Only it made Nessa come too soon... with her little legs all tangled. And our mother––

Analysis of Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch...
Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the East is a fantasy book by Gregory Maguire. It follows the life of the Wicked Witch, the
character from the Wizard of Oz, from her birth to her death, or her pseudo–death. It also explores the question the nature of good and evil. The main
character is, of course, the Wicked Witch, Elphaba. She is born green, with really sharp teeth, and afraid of water. When she gets near water, she just
gets really scared, and when she cries or a couple drops of water get on her it burns her. When she is still young her father, who is a minister, decides
they will move to the Quadling country to try to convert the people there to the faith of the Unknown God. Elphaba is described many times ... Show

Madame Morrible tries to get them to work for the Wizard, but she puts a spell on them so they won't remember. Afterwards, Elphaba goes
"underground" with a revolt against the Wizard. Fiyero spots her one day, and they start talking. Even though she tells him to go away for his
own safety, he keeps meeting up with her and they have an affair. Elphaba tries to murder Madame Morrible but fails. Fiyero, who watched her,
goes to her apartment, where members of the Wizard's private army are waiting. When Elphaba comes back, she finds massive amounts of blood
all around the room, but no body. She goes into shock, and seeks refuge with a religious order. It is implied she has a son but you never actually
know because she was in a coma for the first year. She stays for seven years in all. Elphaba, with her son Liir, goes to the Vinkus to beg forgivness
from Fiyero's wife, Sarima. Sarima is dead set against Elphaba telling her anything upsetting, so Elphaba's wish is never fulfilled. By now, Elphaba
has learned a little magic from a book she found in Sarima's library, but is actually from our, and the Wizard's, world. Nessarose, who is now the
ruler of Munchkinland and a witch, writes, and Elphaba goes to visit. While she is gone the Wizard's forces storm the castle and carry off Sarima and
her family, leaving only Liir. After seven years of unsuccessful search

Theater has been a platform that has been used to deepen our communication and understanding of the complexities of the world around us. It teaches
us through language, movement, and the establishment of intimate relationships that play to the contagious nature of emotions.
The majority of the 20th century saw a utilization of plays as a tool to stimulate social change, provoke viewers to assess the foundation of what they
believe, and an attempt to depict humanity as it truly was. In comparison, though not totally in abandonment, the later 20th century and early 21th
century brought to life a more flashy, commercialized interpretation of this tool, and played to the societal theme of entertainment, as seen in the
increase of musical theater (Janaro). A true example of this stark contrast isTennessee Williams' tragedy The Glass Menagerie and Winnie Holzman and
Stephen Schwartz's mega–musical Wicked. Although from fundamentally different eras and using the employment of distinctive structures that
correlate with the different branches of theater, at the core, these stories speak to the same idea of freedom as discussed in the Janaro text.
Through assessing the actual elements of these theatrical pieces, there are a lot of similar motifs advanced by both works. In both cases, there is an
overarching theme of the characters being divergent from cultural expectations, the ideal of fatherhood is outlined as symbol of contempt and
abandonment, there is prevalence of both

Wicked By Gregory Maguire Character Traits
Frex's character, in Gregory Maguire's book, Wicked is described as a charlatan. Maguire creates a complex character in Frex, who is a minister
that misleads people by getting them to believe in something that is untrue. He also uses connotation for setting stronger words that impact his
descriptions towards Frex. Maguire also creates a complex character for Elphaba, who is described as peculiar, or strange and doesn't seem at all
like a normal person. Many things make Frex a charlatan. For instance, his own wife Melina says to their daughter on page 32 : "Your father is a
charlatan." A charlatan is someone who is dishonest or a fraud. Instead of saying: "Your father is a fraud," Maguire chooses the word charlatan
because although both words mean are similar, "charlatan" is stronger and has a more negative impact towards Frex. Another... Show more content on

For instance, on pages 19–20 it says: "... the infant glistened a scandalous shade of green emerald...an undeniable green cast to the skin." Most babies
aren't born green, and even more shocking, Elphaba bites off the fishwife's finger with her unbelievably sharp teeth. On page 20 it states : "The
child bit the finger off at the second knuckle." This is also unusual because most babies don't have teeth, especially razor sharp ones. Even later in
the book, it states that as a child, Elphaba bit everything she saw. Another strange thing about Elphaba was that she seemed to avoid water at all
costs. On page 113 it states: "Elphaba always recoiled, flinching if she was caught by even the scattering of drops." Also, on page 185, Fiero asks if
there was something to drink and Elphaba responds: "I don't have running water. I don't use it." This shows that Elphaba is peculiar because normal
people need water to live and use it in their everyday lives to drink, cook, and and bathe. On the other hand, Elphaba is very resistant to come in
contact with water, almost as if she was

How Does The Carousel In Something Wicked This Way Come
Carousel The carousel in Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury symbolizes innocence made evil. The Carousel in this book has
the ability to make people older or younger, whichever they prefer. The carousel affects many people in different ways, whether it is the glory of
(de)aging or the sadness of realizing the mistake. If one would go on the carousel, it would not only affect the individual but also the people around
them. The desire of wanting a ride on the carousel comes from wanting to live or relive an event that would happen during that age. People have the
innocent desire without thinking of the horrible consequences. The carousel makes people younger by going on it backwards as the Funeral March
plays. (Bradbury 43) Mr.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You lose your wrinkles and gain back your figure you lost long ago. Charles Halloway and Miss Foley would fit into that category, but only one does
not give into that temptation. Charles Halloway is sad because of the sole reason that he is fifty–four. (Bradbury 74) He wishes and hates that he
cannot run like Will. Charles felt weird around his son, Will, because of their huge age difference. (Bradbury 20) Charles does feel that he is a
good person to his family but not to himself. He is sad that he is too old compared to the other thirteen year old fathers. Mr. Dark offers to turn
Charles back to thirty if he told Dark where Will and Jim are, but Charles was not tempted. He is strong because he knows his age at the moment is
greater than his desires to turn back time. Miss Foley has an extreme desire to regain her youth. She knows that nothing will stand in her way of
going on the carousel. (Bradbury 67) She gives into temptation and expects a good time, but she ends up being a girl about the same age as her
students. When Jim and Will see Miss Foley cry, Will feels that he knows her voice. She knows who they are, but they are not sure if it is her, they
only have a suspicion. (Bradbury 86) Miss Foley does not know the trouble she is in until after the ride. Charles and Miss Foley both had the desire to
be young. While Miss Foley got what she wanted, she did not like the result. Charles knows why he is that

Miss Gulch: The Wicked Witch Of The West
In the movie, The wizard of Oz Miss Gulch/The wicked witch of the west, is the antagonist of the story line. Miss Gulch's name means she is a hateful
and hideous person, because her name represents a deep cliff/abyss, or an extreme threat. The Wicked witch of the west is evil. When the Wicked
Witch of the West shows up at Munchkinland all of the Munchkins tried to run/hide, because they are scared of her. This demonstrates that she is evil,
because the munchkins knew that she terrorizes people, and they did not want to be her target. The wicked witch has no emotion. Instead of the wicked

Wicked By Gregory Maguire Analysis
The author of Wicked,Gregory Maguire wrote his story to be engaging in many levels.Firstly, he uses expanded detail that engages readers who love
background. Similarly, his writing is high quality and contains many similes, metaphors and personification. His characters are also very consistent in
their beliefs. You can tell a what characters opinion will be just by how much you know about them. Finally, his writing is occasionally incredibly
humorous, and one wants to keep reading, just to be able to laugh again.
In Wicked,Liir, Elphaba's (perhaps) son, grows up from a whimpering child, to a headstrong teenager. When we first meet Liir, he is constantly silent
and when he meets Sarina's children, he is scared of them. Developing through the pain and loss he suffers (like nearly dieing in the fishing well), he

She begins as a shallow naive girl, who when her maid gets hurt, rather than having sympathy, she complains for her not being able to assist her.
However, after spending time with Elphaba, she learns to become less superficial and becomes a better person.
In Wicked, Elphaba learns the importance of companionship. She had spent her whole life pushing people away, but when she reunites with Feiro,
she realizes how much she needs people in her life, and mourns her for her entire life. Again, when Sarima and her family are kidnapped, Elphaba
spends seven and a half years looking for them. Though she won't admit it, she needs people (and her animals) to keep her happy.
The title Wicked symbolizes the belief of what wicked truly is. Many people believe that Elphaba is wicked, so much so that she starts believing it
too. In truth, Elphaba is a unhappy, truthful to fault, stubborn, strong hearted girl. The contrast between good and evil is far more complicated than one
thinks. The true question of the story is if Elphaba deserves her

Similarities Between Wizard Of Oz And Wicked
Wizard of Oz and Wicked. Two very different stories both sharing the same characters and setting. The two plots are so masterfully intertwined, but
showing two very different points of view. Although they share so many similarities, relationships and conflicts between the two are very different.
Glinda maybe isn't so good after all, Elphaba was just trying to do what was right, and the Wizard was the real villain all along. To truly see things as
they really are, both sides of a story must be acknowledged and understood, or else someone else's story will be lost.
The Wizard of Oz is a classic known by all. The plot is fairly simple. Poor bored Dorothy is sick of her normal boring life on her Aunt and Uncles
farm in Kansas and decides to run away to a more exciting life. Her plans are changed when she meets a fortune teller who convinces her to go
back home. Unfortunately, as she is headed back home a horrible storm starts and she and her dog Toto are blown away, along with her house. When
she lands, she comes outside to see that she has landed on a person with red shoes. She is met by tiny people and a witch called Glinda who tells her
that she has landed on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy tells Glinda she wants to go home, and Glinda tells her if she follows the
yellow brick road she will end up in the Emerald City where the Wonderful Wizard of Ozcan help get her home.

We all have felt the pain of a broken a heart and it's fair to say it is the most wicked thing to exist. A broken heart has the power to change one's life
completely whether it be for the good, for the bad, or a just a new road. In the book Wicked by Gregory Maguire a change in the main character's
heart turned into the death of a loved one and disarrangement of her entire life. But to get into this you need to know the beginning. Elphaba was
born in Munchkinland, her dad a preacher of sorts and her mom the granddaughter of the ruler of Munchkinland. Elphaba was born with green skin
which caused her to be discriminated against from a young age even by her own parents. Later on she went to college and there she met what would

Something Wicked Horatio Analysis
In the beginning of the novel Something Wicked, Horatio, Mac, and Wallace fit into society. They act like good friends to each other and do
activities together such as bungie jumping. Before they begin their trip to the Highland Games mountain, the three decide to go receive palm
readings from a psychic. The women tells Mac that he will become king of the mountain, but Wallace will own it. Ever since Mac received that
reading, he has unleashed a side that he has never shown to anyone. When Mac was told he would be king of the mountain, he truly believed in
this "prophecy." In doing so, he decided to take the initiative no matter what the case was. For example, he decided to damage Bank's bagpipes. It
was Bank's only opportunity to get a college scholarship. However, according to Horatio, "Mac got it into his that he was going to be the king of
the mountain but that you [Banks] were going to own it. He figured the only way that it was going to happen was if you went to college and made
enough money to buy it, so he paid the Hell's Pipers (A gang) to bollocks your bagpipes." In other words, Mac was trying to ensure no one but... Show

communicating, and he's not going to let anyone stand in his way." Even if it means betraying his cousin Wallace and his best friend Horatio.
Throughout the novel, he lies to Horatio about everything he committed: the murders and the sabotaging. In the end, Horatio feels betrayed that a

Comparison: The Wicked And Divine
Stories are a quintessential part of life that gives color to the world. The Wicked and Divine is a story that focuses on a pantheon of twelve teenagers
who have been turned into G–ds, but will die in two years. Each of the G–ds is the reincarnation of a different deity from all of mythology. These G–ds
are shaped by the stories they leave behind. The stories that are widely shared are created from the adventures and performances of people, heroes, and
G–ds. Stories are what make G–ds immortal. Stories do not come to be without something worth telling. If a G–d wants to be remembered it must
perform great feats and impress, so others will later tell their story. The G–ds in the The Wicked and Divine each have their own style and persona that
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The power of stories keeps G–ds alive. Stories will transform and transmute over time, but they will endure. These changes in the story happen because
the mind has a tendency to remember things that make a strong impression and to forget things that don't make a strong impression. In the The Wicked
and Divine, the G–d Anake kills Luci, but there is a way Luci will continue to live and that is through Laura. Laura will be there to ensure Luci's story
continues to live on in others. Just because a G–d cannot die does not mean they will be immortalized. I am sure there have been many G–ds forgotten
and thus cease to exist. A G–d cannot exist if no one knows there is G–d. Only those who have meaningful stories to be told and shared can truly be
immortal. After Anake kills Luci she looks at a newsman's camera and says, " Generally speaking, Gods desire nothing but adoration" (Gillen 146).
G–ds want to be loved and worship because without these things they cannot live on. As long as a G–d is worshiped and honored stories will continue
to be told about them. Even if they are hated there still has to be someone to spread those stories of hate. Gillen wrote a short story about an
interaction between Lucifer and David Bowe. Lucifer approaches Bowie and asks him for advice. She says, "There's so little time, and so much work I
want to do. I'm going to die but I

Wicked Vs Oz Compare And Contrast
Wizard of Oz vs. Wicked
The Wizard of Oz and Wicked are two famous books that were turned into movies and plays. At first glance, these two works look very similar since
they both revolve around a main character that happens to be a witch. Even though the two storylines are entwined, there are still many contrasting
points that make the two unique. Many similarities and differences can be found between wizards, the plot, and the main characters of the Wizard of Oz
and Wicked.
The Wizard of Oz was written in 1900 by L. Frank Baum, 95 years before Wicked was published. The plot revolves around Dorothy and her dog, Toto,

Why I Read Wicked
I had been wanting to read Wicked for a long time. I finally found a copy at a thrift store (must be everyone is hanging onto their copies), but had a
list of other books to read first. With all of those out of the way, it was finally time to get around to Wicked. It seemed really strange at first with the
weird names and the clock puppet with two *ahem* "thingies". However, once you get used to the format of it, it's really easy to get into. In all my
years I never would have stopped to think about the past of the Wicked Witch of the West (or the East for that matter). Who would have thought that
Glinda and the Wicked Witches were roommates at boarding school, or that the witch is so mean because her lover was killed? I sure wouldn't have
thought that far into their backstories. I remember Richard Armitage saying in an interview that when he takes on a role, he writes a biography for the
character to better become that person. This book takes on that ideal and really almost makes you more sympathetic to Elphaba than to Dorothy. It
should be interesting to watch the movie again now that I "know" more about the characters! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the very end. I like Maguire's writing style, but the book isn't as good as Wicked. You are so far removed fromThe Wizard of Oz at this point, that I
would venture to say the book has nothing to do with it at all. Like I said, the book is interesting and well written, but I wouldn't read it a second
time. I was disappointed by the loose ends left at the conclusion of the book and by the lead character's dirtbaggish behavior from time to

Summary Of ' The Wicked Witch Of Darkwood '
It all happened when my prodigy brother Sam was kidnapped by the wicked witch of Darkwood. It was early in the morning when I woke up and
discovered that Sam was missing. I rushed to the front door calling Sam 's name frantically, knowing that he would not be there. A witch named
Rachel had wanted us to take him to her castle but knowing that she was evil, my family had refused. She became furiously angry and threatened
that that would not be the last we heard of her. She had had an evil plan that needed someone like Sam because he was a prodigy because he was
so smart. I quickly called the members of our gang, the Rescuers, of which I had been nominated leader. My best friends, Jack, Otto, and David
answered the phone. We met together in the Cul de Sac in our neighborhood and I quickly told them our dilemma. Immediately, after I was done
talking, we set off on the road leading toward the misty beach. We jogged until we could not run anymore and finally reached the railroad which
went directly to Rachel's castle, Darkwood. The mist was terrible, and we could barely see in front of us. We found an abandoned railroad car and
quickly jumped in; it was about 7:00 AM. As we sped through the dark, misty air, we could hear the waves lapping up against the railroad track. If
there was an answer, I'd find it there. A couple minutes went by and Otto was already complaining. "Are we almost there yet? I'm hungry." 'Well I'm
sorry that my brother was taken by the evil

Friendships are tested when struggles come into play. The play of Wicked brings in fantastic moral lessons for the readers to ponder. It provides issues
that are relevant to today's society and it can help one be aware of some tricky situations that they may encounter throughout an individual's life. The
characters in the play may not go about the matters exceedingly well, but that does not mean that someone cannot learn from the mistakes of how the

always do things for the right reasons, "You can't! Spells are irreversible! I knew she had the power, I told you!" (Holzman 1.15) Once Elphaba

Good And Evil In Gregory Maguire's Wicked
Anger and evil are main emotion that are portrayed in the book Wicked. These emotions are clear in Gregory Maguire's famous novel, Wicked,
which was published in 1995 and takes place in the Land of Oz. This novel is one of Maguire's bestselling books and in 2003 they decided to turn it
into a musical and to this day it still gets performed to this day. Now Wicked is based on Oz therefor in the book there are many things that tie together
the two books. Wicked is supposed to be a better version of The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Oz was written many years before Wicked even though
when looking at a timeline it shows Wicked should be first, then Oz. The book revolves around these two main Character Elphaba and Glinda, there are

Elphaba because Glinda brings the evil out in Elphaba and that is not a good thing because she makes her feel poorly of herself and no one wants
to feel that way. Elphaba also becomes very jealous of Glinda and that is a start to another conflict between the two of them. Then end up turning
against each other and they are enemies. Good vs. Evil would be another popular theme in the book and it can go along with the first one pretty
well because it's about the same characters. The good witch brings out the evil in the wicked witch. Now when you really think about this theme
you have to realize that this whole book basically says everyone is evil. But you have to purposely want to be evil you can't just accidentally do
that. When it comes to goodness you have to practice that over time it doesn't just come naturally. If Elphaba actually practiced being nice she
would've had more friends by the end and less enemies. But it was the other way around and that is fine but by the end of the book she wasn't alive.
No one could put up with how she treated others and people could see that she wasn't going to change no matter if they thought she would. The book
Wicked presents many different themes but the ones that I pulled out really stuck with me and it described the layout of the book in a detailed

Follow The Yellow Brick Road : The Wizard Of Oz
"Follow the yellow brick road" – The Wizard of Oz. Although society is more familiar with the 1939 version it was in fact the fifth remake of the
1910 silent film. In fact the original film was actually based off of a 1902 stage musical of the same content which was based off of the original book
written by Lyman Frank Baum. The release of the movies 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' and 'Oz the Great and Powerful ' is a 103 years difference. In
that amount of time this movie has been remade 57 times and counting. Even though the newer version of the Wizard of Oz isn 't a remake of the
original it 's more of a prequel , both the original and the new version were interesting as you get a different perspective because the focus was on
different aspects, the techniques used were drastically different and the characters play roles that are unexpected. First, there are quite a few
differences between the two films because the plot of the story is altered so that the audience get to see the story play out in the third person 's
perspective in the 1910 version where as the perspective is changed to the wizard 's point of view in the 2013 version. The original movie was a
black and white silent film that only lasted thirteen minutes long and while the characters are still on a quest to find the wizard some of the scenes
are moving at a faster tempo or are not included at all as the audience is filled in though text what is happening. In the new version it also starts out in

Symbolism In Wicked By Gregory Maguire
Through the novel 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire, we try to understand his views and descriptions of social, political and ethical issues on
contemporary society, disguised by a fantasy stories set in the Land of Oz. The whole plot follows the life of a green–skin girl, Elphaba, who suffered
from social prejudice and family favoritism at an early age. Elphaba has to get through lots of difficulties in her life. From her perspective as a wicked
witch, we can see how Maguire portraits evil, good, love, hatred, fate, destiny, betrayal and tragedy. Maguire did a great job in composing a
fascinating complex story with reflections on topics closely resemble to our society such as racism, favoritism, animal right, sex inequalities, religions
and politics. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elphaba is afraid of water and she is also circumspect towards it because when she touches it, her skin will get burned. She will always try to hide
herself from water. "She had to tuck herself between some exposed roots of the black willow tree, where no water could endanger her, and wait for
the storm to pass." Also, "Elphaba would never drown, never, because she would not go near the lake" (Maguire 33). According to Griffith, "A
symbol is something that represents something else", "A symbol is an object that has meaning beyond itself." (76 Griffith) Even though she
cannot touch water, she is fascinated by it. The idea of fearing water and fascinated by water is quite opposite idea, ye Maguire deploys this. In the
story, Elphaba is described as staring at water glasses, yet shying away when they are brought too close. Elphaba is always aware of water.
Examples include Elphaba "shucking her cloak and folding it inside out so that the wet wool never touched her. On the occasion when another
cafe patron would come through, shaking water off an umbrella, Elphaba always recoiled, flinching if she was caught by even a scattering of
drops."(Maguire 113) Moreover, whenever something terrible is approaching, water is nearby most of the time. This reveals how water is a
phenomenal symbol of fear, but on other hand Elphaba was attracted to it. From this point, we can also understand that water is a private symbol.
According to Writing Essays about Literature, "Private symbols are unique to an individual or to a single work. Only from clues in the work itself
can we learn the symbolic value of the object." The clues in the novel are given that water is a symbol of fear. In contrast, we can also see that there
is an obvious symbol in the book Christine that acts an important role to project the main theme of the book. Christine is a vehicle, however she also
symbolizes female in the book. The same as water in

Character Analysis Of Wicked
Allyson Magallanes
Period 5
Character Analysis Essay
Wicked, created by Winnie Holzman, is a musical is centered around a story of a misunderstood outcast Elphaba Thropp, as told by her frenemy
G(a)linda Upland. The story begins with an affair that Elphaba's mother has with a "green" man who forces her to drink a green elixir. Later the elixir
is revealed to be the reason why Elphaba's skin is green. Elphaba is nearsighted and a bit of a nerd in terms of appearance but even more so with her
intelligence being her strongest suit. Throughout the story, her wisdom appears more providently when dragged into making reasonable decisions and
who to befriend. Wicked follows Elphaba's many trials of discrimination and prejudice.
At first glance, you instantly know that Elphaba is smart and full of determination. She meets Galinda, who is uncomfortable around Elphaba due
both to her green complexion and lack of social standing. She also meets Professor Dillamond who is also discriminated against for being different
by his own students. Elphaba empathizes with him and she takes a stand for talking animal rights. Elphaba is also very protective of her sister,
Nessarose. She thinks of herself as the reason why her sister is the way she is and blames herself when explaining to Galinda. From this, we can tell
that Elphaba has very low self–esteem. As much as she wants to believe that she doesn't care what people think, it's obvious how appreciated she feels

Temptation In Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes
"Something Wicked This Way Comes", by Ray Bradbury, is a horror novel in which 2 boys have a scary encounter with a traveling carnival. The
carnival, led by Mr. Dark, is used to entice several characters into its evil trap by giving them the opportunity to fulfill their strongest desires. To do so,
they must only pay the hidden, and dangerous, price. Bradbury presents the idea that giving in to temptation always comes with a catch.
In "Something Wicked This Way Comes", there are numerous instances of characters giving into their desires and ultimately facing severe
consequences. For example, Miss Foley is very insecure about her age and the way she looks, and longs to be young and beautiful again. When she
goes to the carnival initially, she bumps into Will and Jim. She is warned by Will not to go into the mirror maze, but does anyway. In the mirror
maze, she saw images of her younger self looking back at her. This enticed her greatly into wanting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
Imagine a child that was born with a bright green tint to their skin and had razor sharp teeth. This happened to Melena Thropp in the book The Life
and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, written by Gregory McGuire. The Broadway musical "Wicked," by Winnie Holzman, was based on this
novel. When it made its debut it astounded the world as it won many awards. "Wicked" draws in many people because they can relate to the feeling of
being ostracized the way Elphaba was. In the 21st century, musicals have progressed along with technology due to the use of new special effects in
musicals today. The New Millennium marks the beginning of the 21st century. On September 9th 2001 one of the most horrific events had occurred
(History.com Staff). Al–Qaeda terrorists had taken over four planes. The terrorists had purposely crashed two of the planes into the Twin Towers. A
third plane had then been crashed into the Pentagon. The first plane had crashed at 8:46 in the morning. The plane had crashed between the 80th and
110th floor. 18 minutes after the first crash another plane had crashed into the south tower near the 60th floor. Fifteen minutes later the south tower
collapsed causing a huge cloud of dust to arrive. At 10:30 a.m. the second tower collapsed. 3000 people were killed in this disaster (History.com Staff).

What Does Gregory Maguire's Wicked Mean
The book Wicked written by Gregory Maguire is much like the classic story The Wizard of Oz. Instead of seeing the story through Dorothy's
perspective, it is seen through Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West's eyes. When reading a narrative, it is important to understand many of the
symbols to get a better understanding of the characters and theme. Wicked follows Elphaba's life while she undergoes prejudices of others along with
dilemmas with being different. As Maguire builds the storyline he utilizes symbols to convey a more in depth perspective of the novel. To begin, the
first symbol that could represent Elphaba and her fear is water. Water is used in the book because in its own way is perfect. Elphaba is very guarded to

Relationships In The Play Wicked
"Well if that's love, it comes at much to high a cost." Wicked is about the life of Elphaba before and after she became the Wicked Witch of the

journey to Oz and her interactions with the Wizard. She leaves Oz and Glinda and struggles to maintain her values and her beliefs. In the play Wicked
by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, Holzman and Schwartz illustrate the theme of love by looking at relationships, family, and mentors. There

when our mother was carrying Nessa, my father began to worry that the new baby might come out...green... He was so worried he made our

Historical information about the Setting: This novel is a fictional novel so there's no exact historical setting but there is some similarities in the story to
our history. Dabbling in the "pleasure faith", persecuting people were some of the things that happened in Munchkinland and that resembles what was
happening in Europe and roughly, America from the 1500s to the 1700s. Those were the years of the Protestant Reformation which was an
uncontrollable religious frenzy led to wars and persecution. The author described Emerald City as a place of political oppression, corruption, danger, etc.

question for you is from Derek in Colorado. Derek asks, "how did you come up with the idea for Wicked Girls?"
SH: Hi Derek. The idea for this book came from a friend of mine after they challenged me to write a book about the Salem Witch Trials. I realized that
there was something fascinating about women and girls who came to power by doing the wrong thing. Somehow, they became the voice of reason and

group. Real life Susannah moved to Rhode Island and briefly resided there until she was shunned out of town. The rest of her whereabouts are yet to
be confirmed but it's believed she went mad and died single. I made her interact with the girls to add some narrative drama.
Int: So, now that I have a bit more knowledge on your book, before we take the next question, I just want to know "what about these girls is true and
what isn't?"
SH: Well, the true difference is their backstories and perspectives. I don't have specific information about how the girls acted, but I did try to draw
from what I know about the behavior of those from the 1600s. No one knows why the girls accused people, so I cannot come out and say that I know

How Is Glinda A Wicked Witch
The Wicked Witch of the West's hunger for power is another big part of her character. She spends much of her time in both the film and the book
wanting the ruby slippers, or in the case of the book, the silver shoes, because of the powers they possess. One might also speculate that an additional
reason the Witch was so mad at Dorothy when her sister was squashed, is because the witch felt threatened by this newcomer that is apparently
powerful enough to kill a witch. If the Witch of the West did, in fact, feel threatened by Dorothy, it would certainly explain why she felt the need to
continually assert her dominance over Dorothy and threaten her.
Even in her character design, the Wicked Witch of the West denies femininity. As Rushdie points... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is clearly important and the one in charge of the farm back in Kansas, but even she depicts at least one of Ellmann's feminine stereotypes. As she
has little screen time, there is not much we know about Aunt Em's character. It is clear, however, that Aunt Em depicts the stereotype of piety. One of
her most iconic lines is "for twenty–three years I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you, and now, well, being a Christian woman I can't say
it," and, as Rushdie points out in his essay Out of Kansas, this is the only mention of religion in the entire film (Wizard 0:10:07–0:10:13)(Rushdie 6).
Additionally, Dorothy tends to think of Aunt Em in a saint–like light, clearly looking up to her and even recalling the time Aunt Em nursed Dorothy
back to health (Wizard 0:14:14–0:14:18). Because we see very little of her, there is not much more we can say about Aunt Em's character in this light,
but it is notable that such care would be given to ensure that a good female character would depict at least one of these stereotypes despite her lack of

I have chosen to attend the musical Wicked, on February 8, 2018, as one of my concert reports. During this production of Wicked the two main
characters, Elphaba ("Elfie") and Glinda, were played by Jackie Burns and Amanda Jane Cooper. The Broadway musical featured the songs Popular,
The Wizard and I, and Defying Gravity. Musicals are simply just plays that have dancing and songs included to add to the excitement and thrill,
allowing the ballads of Wicked to enhance the storyline. For example, the song Popular was a song sung to tell the audience about how Glinda was

The Wicked Musical
Musicals were originally developed in the 20th century with the purpose to entertain, however, they have surpassed this and have accomplished to
entwine with the emotions of an audience group through the manipulation of certain musical elements. One of the musicals that correspond to an
unadulterated musical is The Wicked. The wicked is based on a book by Winnie Holzman with the Music and Lyrics written by Stephen Schwartz. The
musical focuses on the basis of an unlikely friendship and who struggle with opposing viewpoints, personalities and rivalry. This friendship is shown
through the pop melodies with an addition of sophisticated musical theatre song construction.
This combination allows for the musical to obtain a severe plot, however, maintains the audience's attention. The unique combination of pop melodies
with sophisticated musical techniques along with complex use of musical elements allows the songs within the musical to depict a profounder meaning
than what is originally perceived. This is depicted well in the song The wizard and I as it uses complex musical elements along with sophisticated
musical techniques.
The song The wizard and I is the 3 piece of the musical, expanding on the notion of Elphaba's dreams in which Elphaba and the Wizard accomplish
great things that could be the useful to the Wizard of Oz.

Wicked By Gregory Maguire: Novel Analysis
It's Not Easy Being Green The Wizard of Oz is one of the world's most well known and cherished stories. It shows how the heroic Dorothy fights
against the Wicked Witch of the West, making it one of the most popular good versus evil tales. The novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked

While Elphaba experiences prejudice from the society around her, her parents have shamed her since birth. Once she was born, her parents worked
to get rid of her green skin. They thought it was like a disease that needs to be cured, and they try different treatments. The Nanny remarks that,
"'peasant treatments don't work... and spiritual intercession has failed. Do you have the courage to think about sorcery? Is there someone local who
could magic the green venom out of the child?'" (Maguire 32). Like the parents, the Nanny also believes that Elphaba's green skin is a curse.
Although Elphaba is human in every other way, her green skin takes away her humanity. The Nanny thinks to herself that "the skin was green as sin.
Not an ugly color. Just not a human color" (Maguire 27). Her family can not accept Elphaba because of her skin color; they barely see her as human.
Their lack of support and understanding hurts Elphaba by making her lose self–confidence and support that she needs to live in a prejudiced world
outside her home. Instead, the discrimination extends to her own parents and Nanny who just mirror the cruel world Elphaba lives in. Additionally,
the Nanny reveals that since "[Elphaba had] been born an unfortunate color. [A gypsy women] gave me some powerful pills. I've always wondered if
the pills were the cause of Nessarose's affliction" (Maguire 300).

every song from the musical. I realize that it will be hard to learn and become my character without actually seeing the musical so I will be taking
the time to watch it before the performance. As we were doing strike for legally blonde, I was playing the musical channel on Pandora and the song
The Wizard and I started playing, and I immediately knew that was the song for me. I could really see the scene unfold as I was listening to the
song, and I felt the emotion as she sang. It did not take long for me to come up with blocking for the scene seeing as not very much I needed. I felt the
natural movement of the scene just by listening to it. This song is the turning point for Elphaba and I love getting to become that

Elpahaba Wicked Dance Essay

  • 1. Elpahaba Wicked Dance Essay For this part of the research, I went and saw the musical 'Wicked' at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London, where it shows several times a week. This means that the costume I design and make needs to be very durable so that it can be used for every performance. The costume I am designing and making is to replace Elpahaba's Act II dress, however I took note of her costumes in the first act as well, along with the rest of that cast's. I saw that the rest of the cast's costumes were heavily decorated and colourful, whilst Elphaba's were mostly very plain, but in Act II, her dress is much more elaborate. Up close, you can see that her dress incorporates lots of different colours, however I was seated in the circle, and the theatre was very large ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, when designing my version of the costume I should make sure that the shape of it is a significant feature. The main colours throughout the musical were emerald green and black, which are the colours most associated with evil and magic. The lighting throughout the theatre was all emerald green, and most of Act II takes place in the 'Emerald City' where everything is green. For that reason, the costume I design should incorporate some of these colours to fit the theme, but at the same time, the use of these colours should be limited so that Elphaba doesn't blend in with the rest of the cast or the scenery, as she is one of two main characters and needs to stand out. Galinda, the other main character, wears a costume that includes a great deal of sparkly embellishments. From where I was in the theatre, the details could not be seen, but whenever she was under a spotlight, they reflected the light and gave off a magical effect. This could be seen from quite far back, so to those seated in the stalls it would've been even more impressive. That being so, I should use a similar type of decoration in my designs because of it's success in Galinda's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wicked Witch Of The West Research Paper Wicked in the West 8th March 2016, Georgia Knight explores the motives of why the Wicked Witch of the West is the ultimate villain, http://picture.finomeb.top/s /wicked–witch–of–the–west/ A shot of what the ultimate villain looks like. WHAT MAKES UP THE ULTIMATE VILLAIN? The green face, the black gown, the wide brim hat or the nose? If you ask anyone who is familiar with the film Wizard of Oz they would say that Elphaba, commonly known as the Wicked Witch of the West, is the ultimate villain. The classic, iconic and memorable Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba is well known to audiences around the world. Her first appearance inThe Wizard of Oz, 1939 film started off her career in notoriety. The Wizard of Oz, 1939 film is based on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The director uses black to create meaning of her intimidating and unfriendly personality. Elphaba is famous for bribery, harming and holding captive her enemies and people who are a threat to her. In the movie she bribes Dorothy for the red slippers, sets fire to the scarecrow and holds captive Dorothy and her friends. The Wicked Witch of the West also holds grudges, likes to get revenge and can be very scary. In the movie Elphaba's sister, the Wicked Witch of the East, is killed accidentally by Dorothy's arrival. Dorothy explains that it was an accident but Elphaba replies: "Well, my little pretty, I can cause accidents too..." Film aesthetics of low angle shots are used frequently throughout the film. The director uses lots of low shots when Dorothy and her friends are trapped in the Wicked Witch's castle. This film aesthetic is used to enhance and to captivate the treatment to others throughout the

  • 4. Wicked: The Real Elphaba Essay In Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West happen before the novel by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In Baum's novel of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, portrays the role of the Wicked Witch of the West being wicked. We have no background or personal preference to understand her life of the Wicked Witch of the West (as known as Elphaba). But in Maguire's novel,Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West , shows how Elphaba traits of a monster are similar to a typical monster that portrays in people's eye. Elphaba is an ideal model of what we see in a monster would be like: abnormal, scary looking, and blunt behavior. She is a target of gossip to those who do not even know ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She could also go to the extreme trying to save animal civil rights because of what she believes in, even if it means to have no one to support her. She was coldly rejected when she tried to ask the Wizard for assistance, but ended revolting against him to save the remaining animals that were tortured and brutally killed. As you can tell, the image of the Wizard of Oz is not so welcoming compared to Maguire's novel versus Buam's novel. Elphaba plays a very extraordinary female role compared to a traditional female role Galinda (as known as Glinda). Glinda was mean, conceited, rude, sociable, pretty and popular woman in college, compared to Elphaba was ugly, an outcast, and unsociable with the students. Elphaba was able to attend school and later be friends with Glinda and Boq, usually Wicked Witch does not have many friends, and tends to be living in loneliness and dreadful life. Glinda attempts to make Elphaba and not be an outcast, but as a lovable Wicked Witch. It failed because of her blunt behavior and personality. Even though Glinda was mean and conceited in a way, she surpassed it with her beauty and social skills, while Elphaba was always criticized and look down at from the students. Glinda said, "Please, it is Galinda" and mocked her professor, Dr. Dillamond, "She could not bring herself to call him sir. Not with that horrid goatee and the tatty waistcoat that looked but from some public house carpet" (Maguire 66). In contrast ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Wicked Play Analysis The play Wicked, written by American lyricist Stephen Schwartz, was a play that demonstrated several conflicts that a person went through during their lifetime. Elphaba, the protagonist, was born with green skin because of a choice that her mother made. She had to deal with the fear and the looks that people gave her because of her appearance. Elphaba dealt with the mockery of others during her years in school. When reading the play, one could compare Elphaba's circumstances to discrimination or racism towards African Americans in the nineteen sixties. In college, she discovered that she had magical powers that she could use for good. The people in the town of Oz stereotyped her and assumed she was a witch who wanted to harm everyone because of her... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If students read this play, they could learn different lessons on how to approach certain situations throughout their lives. The playWicked displayed several conflicts, stereotypes, and shows how one can overcome an obstacle in their lifetime, which are lessons students could learn by reading this play. The play opens with the introduction of the first conflict that Elphaba was introduced to when she was born. Elphaba's mother made a bad choice which resulted in her daughter having green skin. She had an affair with Elphaba's biological father, the Wizard of Oz. When her mother was alone, her father came and gave her a green potion, not knowing of what the potion would have done to her. Elphaba was born soon after her affair, and she had green skin. Her father was disgusted and confused as to why his daughter looked the way she did. Elphaba's father developed a hatred for her because of the disability that her sister, Nessarose, was born with. She mentioned in the play that "He was so worried, he made our mother chew milk flowers, day and night. Only it made Nessa come too soon... with her little legs all tangled. And our mother–– ... • 6. Analysis of Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch... Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the East is a fantasy book by Gregory Maguire. It follows the life of the Wicked Witch, the character from the Wizard of Oz, from her birth to her death, or her pseudo–death. It also explores the question the nature of good and evil. The main character is, of course, the Wicked Witch, Elphaba. She is born green, with really sharp teeth, and afraid of water. When she gets near water, she just gets really scared, and when she cries or a couple drops of water get on her it burns her. When she is still young her father, who is a minister, decides they will move to the Quadling country to try to convert the people there to the faith of the Unknown God. Afterwards, Elphaba goes "underground" with a revolt against the Wizard. Fiyero spots her one day, and they start talking. Even though she tells him to go away for his own safety, he keeps meeting up with her and they have an affair. Elphaba tries to murder Madame Morrible but fails. Fiyero, who watched her, goes to her apartment, where members of the Wizard's private army are waiting. When Elphaba comes back, she finds massive amounts of blood all around the room, but no body. She goes into shock, and seeks refuge with a religious order. It is implied she has a son but you never actually know because she was in a coma for the first year. She stays for seven years in all. Elphaba, with her son Liir, goes to the Vinkus to beg forgivness from Fiyero's wife, Sarima. Sarima is dead set against Elphaba telling her anything upsetting, so Elphaba's wish is never fulfilled. By now, Elphaba has learned a little magic from a book she found in Sarima's library, but is actually from our, and the Wizard's, world. Nessarose, who is now the ruler of Munchkinland and a witch, writes, and Elphaba goes to visit. • 7. The Glass Menagerie And Winnie Holzman And Stephen... Theater has been a platform that has been used to deepen our communication and understanding of the complexities of the world around us. It teaches us through language, movement, and the establishment of intimate relationships that play to the contagious nature of emotions. The majority of the 20th century saw a utilization of plays as a tool to stimulate social change, provoke viewers to assess the foundation of what they believe, and an attempt to depict humanity as it truly was. In comparison, though not totally in abandonment, the later 20th century and early 21th century brought to life a more flashy, commercialized interpretation of this tool, and played to the societal theme of entertainment, as seen in the increase of musical theater (Janaro). A true example of this stark contrast isTennessee Williams' tragedy The Glass Menagerie and Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz's mega–musical Wicked. Although from fundamentally different eras and using the employment of distinctive structures that correlate with the different branches of theater, at the core, these stories speak to the same idea of freedom as discussed in the Janaro text. Through assessing the actual elements of these theatrical pieces, there are a lot of similar motifs advanced by both works. In both cases, there is an overarching theme of the characters being divergent from cultural expectations, the ideal of fatherhood is outlined as symbol of contempt and abandonment, there is prevalence of both ... • 8. Wicked By Gregory Maguire Character Traits Frex's character, in Gregory Maguire's book, Wicked is described as a charlatan. Maguire creates a complex character in Frex, who is a minister that misleads people by getting them to believe in something that is untrue. He also uses connotation for setting stronger words that impact his descriptions towards Frex. Maguire also creates a complex character for Elphaba, who is described as peculiar, or strange and doesn't seem at all like a normal person. Many things make Frex a charlatan. For instance, his own wife Melina says to their daughter on page 32 : "Your father is a charlatan." A charlatan is someone who is dishonest or a fraud. Instead of saying: "Your father is a fraud," Maguire chooses the word charlatan because although both words mean are similar, "charlatan" is stronger and has a more negative impact towards Frex. Another... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, on pages 19–20 it says: "... the infant glistened a scandalous shade of green emerald...an undeniable green cast to the skin." Most babies aren't born green, and even more shocking, Elphaba bites off the fishwife's finger with her unbelievably sharp teeth. On page 20 it states : "The child bit the finger off at the second knuckle." This is also unusual because most babies don't have teeth, especially razor sharp ones. Even later in the book, it states that as a child, Elphaba bit everything she saw. Another strange thing about Elphaba was that she seemed to avoid water at all costs. On page 113 it states: "Elphaba always recoiled, flinching if she was caught by even the scattering of drops." Also, on page 185, Fiero asks if there was something to drink and Elphaba responds: "I don't have running water. I don't use it." • 9. How Does The Carousel In Something Wicked This Way Come Carousel The carousel in Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury symbolizes innocence made evil. The Carousel in this book has the ability to make people older or younger, whichever they prefer. The carousel affects many people in different ways, whether it is the glory of (de)aging or the sadness of realizing the mistake. If one would go on the carousel, it would not only affect the individual but also the people around them. The desire of wanting a ride on the carousel comes from wanting to live or relive an event that would happen during that age. People have the innocent desire without thinking of the horrible consequences. The carousel makes people younger by going on it backwards as the Funeral March plays. (Bradbury 43) Mr.... Wicked By Gregory Maguire Analysis The author of Wicked,Gregory Maguire wrote his story to be engaging in many levels.Firstly, he uses expanded detail that engages readers who love background. Similarly, his writing is high quality and contains many similes, metaphors and personification. His characters are also very consistent in their beliefs. You can tell a what characters opinion will be just by how much you know about them. Finally, his writing is occasionally incredibly humorous, and one wants to keep reading, just to be able to laugh again. In Wicked,Liir, Elphaba's (perhaps) son, grows up from a whimpering child, to a headstrong teenager. The Wicked and Divine is a story that focuses on a pantheon of twelve teenagers who have been turned into G–ds, but will die in two years. Each of the G–ds is the reincarnation of a different deity from all of mythology. These G–ds are shaped by the stories they leave behind. The stories that are widely shared are created from the adventures and performances of people, heroes, and G–ds. Stories are what make G–ds immortal. In the The Wicked and Divine, the G–d Anake kills Luci, but there is a way Luci will continue to live and that is through Laura. Laura will be there to ensure Luci's story continues to live on in others. Just because a G–d cannot die does not mean they will be immortalized. I am sure there have been many G–ds forgotten and thus cease to exist. A G–d cannot exist if no one knows there is G–d. Only those who have meaningful stories to be told and shared can truly be immortal. I finally found a copy at a thrift store (must be everyone is hanging onto their copies), but had a list of other books to read first. With all of those out of the way, it was finally time to get around to Wicked. It seemed really strange at first with the weird names and the clock puppet with two *ahem* "thingies". However, once you get used to the format of it, it's really easy to get into. In all my years I never would have stopped to think about the past of the Wicked Witch of the West (or the East for that matter). Who would have thought that Glinda and the Wicked Witches were roommates at boarding school, or that the witch is so mean because her lover was killed? I sure wouldn't have thought that far into their backstories. I remember Richard Armitage saying in an interview that when he takes on a role, he writes a biography for the character to better become that person. The release of the movies 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' and 'Oz the Great and Powerful ' is a 103 years difference. In that amount of time this movie has been remade 57 times and counting. Symbolism In Wicked By Gregory Maguire Through the novel 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire, we try to understand his views and descriptions of social, political and ethical issues on contemporary society, disguised by a fantasy stories set in the Land of Oz. The whole plot follows the life of a green–skin girl, Elphaba, who suffered from social prejudice and family favoritism at an early age. Elphaba has to get through lots of difficulties in her life. From her perspective as a wicked witch, we can see how Maguire portraits evil, good, love, hatred, fate, destiny, betrayal and tragedy. Also, "Elphaba would never drown, never, because she would not go near the lake" (Maguire 33). According to Griffith, "A symbol is something that represents something else", "A symbol is an object that has meaning beyond itself." (76 Griffith) Even though she cannot touch water, she is fascinated by it. The idea of fearing water and fascinated by water is quite opposite idea, ye Maguire deploys this. In the story, Elphaba is described as staring at water glasses, yet shying away when they are brought too close. Elphaba is always aware of water. Examples include Elphaba "shucking her cloak and folding it inside out so that the wet wool never touched her. On the occasion when another cafe patron would come through, shaking water off an umbrella, Elphaba always recoiled, flinching if she was caught by even a scattering of drops."(Maguire 113) Moreover, whenever something terrible is approaching, water is nearby most of the time. This reveals how water is a phenomenal symbol of fear, but on other hand Elphaba was attracted to it. From this point, we can also understand that water is a private symbol. According to Writing Essays about Literature, "Private symbols are unique to an individual or to a single work. Only from clues in the work itself can we learn the symbolic value of the object." The clues in the novel are given that water is a symbol of fear. • 29. The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Imagine a child that was born with a bright green tint to their skin and had razor sharp teeth. This happened to Melena Thropp in the book The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, written by Gregory McGuire. The Broadway musical "Wicked," by Winnie Holzman, was based on this novel. When it made its debut it astounded the world as it won many awards. "Wicked" draws in many people because they can relate to the feeling of being ostracized the way Elphaba was. • 30. What Does Gregory Maguire's Wicked Mean The book Wicked written by Gregory Maguire is much like the classic story The Wizard of Oz. Instead of seeing the story through Dorothy's perspective, it is seen through Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West's eyes. When reading a narrative, it is important to understand many of the symbols to get a better understanding of the characters and theme. Wicked follows Elphaba's life while she undergoes prejudices of others along with dilemmas with being different. As Maguire builds the storyline he utilizes symbols to convey a more in depth perspective of the novel. To begin, the first symbol that could represent Elphaba and her fear is water. Water is used in the book because in its own way is perfect. Elphaba is very guarded to it because if she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She leaves Oz and Glinda and struggles to maintain her values and her beliefs. In the play Wicked by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, Holzman and Schwartz illustrate the theme of love by looking at relationships, family, and mentors. He was so worried he made our mother chew milk flowers day and night. Only it made Nessa come too soon, with her little legs all tangled. And our mother never woke up. None of which would have ever happened if not for me." Out of all her family members though, Elphaba was closest with Nessa, and even she took Elphaba for granted. "After he learned what you'd done! Int: So, we're here to talk about your book, Wicked Girls. We've pulled some listener questions and are going to hopefully get some answers. Our first question for you is from Derek in Colorado. Derek asks, "how did you come up with the idea for Wicked Girls?" SH: Hi Derek. The idea for this book came from a friend of mine after they challenged me to write a book about the Salem Witch Trials. I realized that there was something fascinating about women and girls who came to power by doing the wrong thing. Somehow, they became the voice of reason and the craziest thing is, these ... Real life Susannah moved to Rhode Island and briefly resided there until she was shunned out of town. The rest of her whereabouts are yet to be confirmed but it's believed she went mad and died single. I made her interact with the girls to add some narrative drama. Int: So, now that I have a bit more knowledge on your book, before we take the next question, I just want to know "what about these girls is true and what isn't?" SH: Well, the true difference is their backstories and perspectives. I don't have specific information about how the girls acted, but I did try to draw from what I know about the behavior of those from the 1600s. • 35. How Is Glinda A Wicked Witch The Wicked Witch of the West's hunger for power is another big part of her character. She spends much of her time in both the film and the book wanting the ruby slippers, or in the case of the book, the silver shoes, because of the powers they possess. One might also speculate that an additional reason the Witch was so mad at Dorothy when her sister was squashed, is because the witch felt threatened by this newcomer that is apparently powerful enough to kill a witch. If the Witch of the West did, in fact, feel threatened by Dorothy, it would certainly explain why she felt the need to continually assert her dominance over Dorothy and threaten her. Even in her character design, the Wicked Witch of the West denies femininity. As Rushdie points... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is clearly important and the one in charge of the farm back in Kansas, but even she depicts at least one of Ellmann's feminine stereotypes. As she has little screen time, there is not much we know about Aunt Em's character. It is clear, however, that Aunt Em depicts the stereotype of piety. One of her most iconic lines is "for twenty–three years I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you, and now, well, being a Christian woman I can't say it," and, as Rushdie points out in his essay Out of Kansas, this is the only mention of religion in the entire film (Wizard 0:10:07–0:10:13)(Rushdie 6). Additionally, Dorothy tends to think of Aunt Em in a saint–like light, clearly looking up to her and even recalling the time Aunt Em nursed Dorothy back to health (Wizard 0:14:14–0:14:18). Because we see very little of her, there is not much more we can say about Aunt Em's character in this light, but it is notable that such care would be given to ensure that a good female character would depict at least one of these stereotypes despite her lack of screen ... • 37. Concert Report: The Musical Wicked I have chosen to attend the musical Wicked, on February 8, 2018, as one of my concert reports. During this production of Wicked the two main characters, Elphaba ("Elfie") and Glinda, were played by Jackie Burns and Amanda Jane Cooper. The Broadway musical featured the songs Popular, The Wizard and I, and Defying Gravity. Musicals are simply just plays that have dancing and songs included to add to the excitement and thrill, allowing the ballads of Wicked to enhance the storyline. For example, the song Popular was a song sung to tell the audience about how Glinda was going to help Elphaba become popular and how Glinda had plans to do "everything that really counts to be popular." • 38. The Wicked Musical Musicals were originally developed in the 20th century with the purpose to entertain, however, they have surpassed this and have accomplished to entwine with the emotions of an audience group through the manipulation of certain musical elements. One of the musicals that correspond to an unadulterated musical is The Wicked. The wicked is based on a book by Winnie Holzman with the Music and Lyrics written by Stephen Schwartz. The musical focuses on the basis of an unlikely friendship and who struggle with opposing viewpoints, personalities and rivalry. This friendship is shown through the pop melodies with an addition of sophisticated musical theatre song construction. This combination allows for the musical to obtain a severe plot, however, maintains the audience's attention. The unique combination of pop melodies with sophisticated musical techniques along with complex use of musical elements allows the songs within the musical to depict a profounder meaning than what is originally perceived. This is depicted well in the song The wizard and I as it uses complex musical elements along with sophisticated musical techniques. The song The wizard and I is the 3 piece of the musical, expanding on the notion of Elphaba's dreams in which Elphaba and the Wizard accomplish great things that could be the useful to the Wizard of Oz. While Elphaba experiences prejudice from the society around her, her parents have shamed her since birth. Once she was born, her parents worked to get rid of her green skin. Do you have the courage to think about sorcery? Is there someone local who could magic the green venom out of the child?'" (Maguire 32). Their lack of support and understanding hurts Elphaba by making her lose self–confidence and support that she needs to live in a prejudiced world outside her home. Instead, the discrimination extends to her own parents and Nanny who just mirror the cruel world Elphaba lives in.
