PAST SIMPLE
Elaborated by Mariana Bastardo
DEFINITIONIs the verb tense used to narrate events that occurred at a
specific time in the past.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SIMPLE PAST:
-Indicates the action taken at a specific time in the past.
-The main verb of the sentence is always in the past tense.
-It has a simple composition of "subject and predicate verb".
-It is the only grammatical tense that uses verbs in the past
tense.
REGULAR VERBS
They are those that
form the past by
adding the suffix 'ed'
or 'd' to the
root of the verb.
IRREGULAR VERBS
There is no simple
rule for deducing the
past simple in English
from these verbs and
therefore they must be
memorized.

Exercise #3: Yes / No Question
Did he study math?
A: Yes, I did.
N: No, I didn't.
