What is EIGRP ?
Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) is a distance vector,
classless routing protocol that was released in 1992 with IOS. EIGRP is an
enhancement of Cisco IGRP(Interior Gateway Routing Protocol).
EIGRP Packets
1.Hello packets
2. Update packets
3. Query packets
4. Reply packets
5. Acknowledgement packets
Hello packets
– Used to discover & form adjacencies with neighbors
Update packets
– Used to propagate routing information
There are 3 types of updates…
• Triggered Update
• Partial Update
• Bounded Update
Query packets
– Used by DUAL for searching
for
Networks.
– Can use Unicast or Multicast
Reply packets
– Reply packet
– Can use Unicast only
Acknowledgement
Packets
– Used to acknowledge receipt
of update, query &
reply packets.
EIGRP Metric Calculation
 Bandwidth-EIGRP uses a static bandwidth to calculate the
metric. Most serial interfaces use a default bandwidth value of
1.544 Mbps.
 Delay- Delay is measure of the time it takes for a packet to
traverse a route.
 Load- Load reflects the amount of traffic utilizing the link.Load
is measured dynamically .
 Reliability- Reliability is a measure of the probability that the
link fail or how often the link has experienced errors. Reliability is
measured dynamically .
Network Topology
EIGRP Metric Calculation
EIGRP reference bandwidth = 10 Mbps
= 10* 10^6 bps
EIGRP
* Successor
* Feasible successor
* Feasible condition
* Reported distance
* Feasible Distance
