Introduction

Aim
The main intension of this paper is to find out how extra-curricular activities affect the
studies of the students at Saint Louis University. The researchers provided their sixty
respondents with a questionnaire that has a Likert Scale, Rating Scale and Rank Data.
The following data sets consisted of a list of positive and negative effects of extracurricular activities in which the respondents can discern unto and choose from.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Extra-curricular activities are those sponsored by and usually held at school but that are
not part of the academic curriculum. They often involve some time commitment outside
of the regular school day.
Extra-curricular activities range from sports to newspaper editing to music and theatre.
Many activities, like football and drama, enjoy extreme longevity, serving as a part of
their school's program over a number of years. Others, like an ecology club or writers'
workshop, may be offered for a shorter time span to reflect a community interest or
involvement by a particular sponsoring faculty member or class of students. For many
students, extracurricular activities present an opportunity to practice social skills and to
experiment in activities that may represent a career interest. For a child who is not gifted
academically, the opportunity to excel in the arts or sports may make a big difference in
his or her self-esteem.
Many extra-curricular activities, such as the school newspaper, photography, and drama,
can lead to careers. Extra-curricular activities also help to form the student's profile for
consideration in college admissions. A student's academic record and scores on
standardized tests form the core of his or her college application profile. However,
admissions officers consider other factors, such as a demonstrated talent in athletics or
the arts or leadership in school or extra-curricular activities. After-school activities can
also include scouting and volunteering, such as working with the Red Cross, a local
animal shelter, a homeless shelter, or in a political campaign. Through these diverse
activities, students can have fun, build a resume for college, increase creativity, improve
organizational skills, learn time management, and develop people skills. (2004, 11.

II. Methodology
The undersigned is conducting a research entitled “The Effects of Extra-Curricular
Activities to the Studies of Saint Louis University Students”. To conduct this study, we
have chosen ten (10) students from each school as a representative to the whole
population of the different schools. We gave them each a questionnaire to answer and
by tallying their answers, we came out with the following tables and graphs.

III.

CONCLUSION

In general, the respondents agreed that there are positive effects in their studies
because of extra-curricular activities. The respondents were able to socialize with
others, learned to manage time, helped themselves become more responsible and
increase their sense of maturity because of extra-curricular activities. The overall
answers of the respondents also agreed that there are negative effects in their studies.
Because of extra-curricular activities, the respondents tend to not attend classes, have
a lack of concentration in studying and experience peer pressure. However, the idea of
abusing themselves was not agreed by the respondents.
Both female and male respondents, agreed with the positive and negative effects of
extra-curricular activities. The sixty respondents were also divided by year levels
namely, the first year and second year students. The first year and second year
students had an overall answer that they agreed on both the advantages and
disadvantages of extra-curricular activities in their studies. The researchers also divided
the respondents into those who live within Benguet and outside Benguet. Both of the
following respondents residing in Benguet and outside Benguet agreed on both the
advantages and disadvantages of extra-curricular activities in their studies.
However, the researchers found out that hanging out with friends, watching movies and
shopping have higher mean values compared to studying. Their least prioritized activity
is doing household chores.
The students recommend to other students that should manage their time wisely
especially when one has an extra-curricular activity to attend to.

Effects of Extra- Curricular Activities

  • 1. THE EFFECTS OF EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN THE STUDIES OF THE STUDENTS AT SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY Statistics 1 TTHS 9:30 – 10:30 P503 BALLENA, Jim
  • 2. 2 I. Introduction Aim The main intension of this paper is to find out how extra-curricular activities affect the studies of the students at Saint Louis University. The researchers provided their sixty respondents with a questionnaire that has a Likert Scale, Rating Scale and Rank Data. The following data sets consisted of a list of positive and negative effects of extracurricular activities in which the respondents can discern unto and choose from. Extra-Curricular Activities Extra-curricular activities are those sponsored by and usually held at school but that are not part of the academic curriculum. They often involve some time commitment outside of the regular school day. Extra-curricular activities range from sports to newspaper editing to music and theatre. Many activities, like football and drama, enjoy extreme longevity, serving as a part of their school's program over a number of years. Others, like an ecology club or writers' workshop, may be offered for a shorter time span to reflect a community interest or involvement by a particular sponsoring faculty member or class of students. For many students, extracurricular activities present an opportunity to practice social skills and to experiment in activities that may represent a career interest. For a child who is not gifted academically, the opportunity to excel in the arts or sports may make a big difference in his or her self-esteem. Many extra-curricular activities, such as the school newspaper, photography, and drama, can lead to careers. Extra-curricular activities also help to form the student's profile for consideration in college admissions. A student's academic record and scores on standardized tests form the core of his or her college application profile. However, admissions officers consider other factors, such as a demonstrated talent in athletics or the arts or leadership in school or extra-curricular activities. After-school activities can also include scouting and volunteering, such as working with the Red Cross, a local animal shelter, a homeless shelter, or in a political campaign. Through these diverse activities, students can have fun, build a resume for college, increase creativity, improve organizational skills, learn time management, and develop people skills. (2004, 11. Extracurricular activit. http://www.answers.com. Retrieved 03, 2013, from http://www.answers.com/topic/extracurricular-activity-3)
  • 3. 3 II. Methodology The undersigned is conducting a research entitled “The Effects of Extra-Curricular Activities to the Studies of Saint Louis University Students”. To conduct this study, we have chosen ten (10) students from each school as a representative to the whole population of the different schools. We gave them each a questionnaire to answer and by tallying their answers, we came out with the following tables and graphs. • 18. 18 III. CONCLUSION In general, the respondents agreed that there are positive effects in their studies because of extra-curricular activities. The respondents were able to socialize with others, learned to manage time, helped themselves become more responsible and increase their sense of maturity because of extra-curricular activities. The overall answers of the respondents also agreed that there are negative effects in their studies. Because of extra-curricular activities, the respondents tend to not attend classes, have a lack of concentration in studying and experience peer pressure. However, the idea of abusing themselves was not agreed by the respondents. Both female and male respondents, agreed with the positive and negative effects of extra-curricular activities. The sixty respondents were also divided by year levels namely, the first year and second year students. The first year and second year students had an overall answer that they agreed on both the advantages and disadvantages of extra-curricular activities in their studies. The researchers also divided the respondents into those who live within Benguet and outside Benguet. Both of the following respondents residing in Benguet and outside Benguet agreed on both the advantages and disadvantages of extra-curricular activities in their studies. However, the researchers found out that hanging out with friends, watching movies and shopping have higher mean values compared to studying. Their least prioritized activity is doing household chores. The students recommend to other students that should manage their time wisely especially when one has an extra-curricular activity to attend to.
