THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA
TOWARDS ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE OF BSBA
STUDENTS
INTRODUCTION
• Social media networking is the method of communication that is utilized the most frequently. It is
being utilized by people from all walks of life. The public was open to social media. Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+, Flickr, snapchat, vine, and Tumblr are
among the many online networking platforms. Social media has become the fastest-growing form of
association due to its capacity to rapidly disseminate useful information. Many businesses have been
affected by social media, but education in general and classroom instruction have been most
affected. Over the past few years, there has been a lot of interest in the application of digital
technology to education. Academic staff and administrators are often expected to look into options
to make sure the learning environment is up-to-date, relevant, and capable of producing graduates
with skills that are compatible with the workplace and their career goals. Carrying highly
sophisticated computing devices in their pockets, students participate in campus life. These students
frequently use these devices for a variety of purposes unrelated to learning, indicating a significant
disconnect. Foundations of advanced education are worried that both their staff and understudies
are carefully proficient, in the way of learning conveyance or technique for guidance. The online
space that students use to connect, share, communicate, and establish or maintain connections with
others for the purposes of academic and socialization is referred to as "social media networking
usage." The rapid growth of social media networking as a means of communication is primarily due
to the successful development of applications for mobile devices.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This paper aims to find out the positive and negative impact of social media on students’ academic
performance. Specifically, it sought to answer the following.
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of the following variables;
• Age
• Gender
• Year Level
2. What is the average time the students spend on social media?
3. What is the impact of social media on the academic performance of the students?
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The present study that will assess the effect of social media on students’ academic performance
presupposes the following:
1. To determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of the following:
• Age
• Gender
• Year Level
2. To determine the average time on social media use.
3. To know the impact of social media on the academic performance of the students.
HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY
• H01Gender does not influence the habit of social media usage.
• H02There is no average time given by the students in using their social
media accounts.
• H03 Time spent on social media negatively impacts academic work.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Effect of social media on BSBA
students’ academic
performance
Impact of social media
 Access to Internet
 Usage
 Perception and Frequency of
using it
The variables of social media that may affect the students’ academic performance are: access to
internet; usage of social media; their perception on social media; and their frequency of using it. With
these variables, the present study will identify the impact of using social media to the academic
performance of the respondents and will be able to draw recommendations that may improve the
learning process and reduce the negative impact of social media.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
• Social networks are becoming more popular among college, states and university students and are a new way
of spending free time and serve as a separate channel for finding the necessary information, both educational and
entertaining. Therefore, it is urgent to examine the question of what effect social networks have on their users, in
particular, how the use of social networks affects the academic success of students. This study will discover this
information, giving the researchers an opportunity to explore and gain new knowledge. Furthermore, it can be
used for future studies.

Table 1 shows the demographic profile of the respondents according to gender. As shown from the
table above, 25 are male student respondents and 45 are female student respondents. The data implies that
most of the respondents are female.
Table 2: Demographic Profile According to Age.
Table 2 shows the demographic profile according to age. Respondents of all ages (18 to 26) were
represented, with slightly larger numbers in the lowest age bracket 18-20 and 21-26 categories accounting for
22 (31%) and 48 (69%) of the respondents, respectively. The oldest age bracket is 26 and the youngest is 18. As
shown from the table above, the data emphasizes that most of the respondents age ranges from 21-26.

Table 3 shows the demographic profile of the respondents according to year level. The table states that
20% of the 70 respondents are 1st year students, the total number of 15 are 3rd year students and 29% with the
total number of 20 are 4th year students. The data implies that most of the respondents are 2nd year students of
BSBA.

Table 4: How often do you spend time in your social media?
As shown from table 4 which presents the answers of the respondents to the question “How often do you
spend time in your social media?”. Out of 70 respondents, most of them answered “sometimes” with the
number of 40 and the percentage of 57% and the ones who responded “sometimes” are 23 students with the
percentage of 33%. The data implies that almost of the student respondents are fond of using social media for
they have spent a lot of time in using it. The student respondents who only answered “not all the time” are 7
students. Therefore, only 10% of these students are not interested in using social media.

Table 5: How many times do you open your social media accounts
Table 5 shows the responds of the student respondents to the question “How many times do you open
your social media account?”. As shown from the table above, it indicates that 34% of the students open their
social media accounts “more than usual”, 29% answered “twice” and 23% answered “thrice”. With this data
when totaled altogether, it infers that most of the students open their social media accounts when given
possible time. In connection, it also implies that these students are fond of using social media accounts as also
indicated in the previous table

Table 6: Do you spend time in your social media during break time in your school?
As shown from table 6 which presents the answers of the respondents to the question “Do you spend time in your social media during
break time in your school?”, the data indicates that 55 students with the percentage of 79% responded to “Yes”. This means that they do not
engage to other activities after class other than spending time in their social media accounts.
As stated from the tables above to answer the statement of the problem “what is the average time the students spend on social media”,
indicates that the hypothesis stated that “There is no average time spent by the students in using their social media accounts” is null.
Therefore, this study shows that the average time spent by the students in using their social media is very high due to the fact that most of
their times even during breaks are spent on using social media accounts.

Table 7 shows that most of the students excels academically in all subject areas. As indicated from the table
above, 94% of the students have high general average totaled from 80-84, 85-89, 90-94 and 95-99. Despite the
fact that these students spend most of their time in using social media, their academic performance was not
affected.

The data from table 8 implies that the student respondents also spend time studying, doing homework and
school activities. That is why, they are also academically inclined despite the fact that they are using social
media accounts most of the time.
Table 9: What is your favorite subject?

The table shows that most of the student respondents also fond of reading and studying. It also means that
spending time on social media accounts are one way of conceptualizing ideas and knowledge needed for them to
pass academically. Therefore, the hypothesis “time spent on social media negatively impacts academic work” is
not accepted for it does not impact negatively the academic performance of the students upon using social media.
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
• The personality trait of a student plays a vital role in analyzing the impact of social media on their academic performance. The
present study was designed to find the difference between extraversion and introversion personality types in students for four identified
factors of social media and their impact on students’ academic performance. The education level and gender were also added to make it
more comprehensive. The implications of this study are useful for institutions, students, teachers and policymakers.
• This study will help the institutions to identify the right mix of social media based on the personality, education level and gender of
the students. For example, technological challenges are faced by all students. It is important for the institutions to identify the challenges
such as cyberbullying, security and privacy issues and accordingly frame the training sessions for all undergraduate and postgraduate
students. These training sessions will help students with extraversion and introversion to come out from possible technological hassles
and will create a healthy ecosystem.

ABSTRACT
• Students are utilizing open social practices like blogging, as well as social media like Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and Flickr, in the classroom for the purpose of
facilitating convenient communication with members of their peer group and, potentially, with members of the class who are interested in the same subject as them and
subject matter experts. Because these social media are typically accessible to the general public, it is necessary to carefully consider the potential dangers posed by their
accessibility, as well as to maintain ongoing communication with students in order to address academic concerns and address any issues that may arise regarding the use
of these platforms.
• The objective of this study is to assess the effect of social media on students’ academic performance presupposes the following: To determine the demographic
profile of the respondents in terms of the following: Age, Gender, Year Level. To determine the average time on social media use and to know the impact of social media
on the academic performance of the students.
• Social networks are becoming more popular among college, states and university students and are a new way of spending free time and serve as a separate channel
for finding the necessary information, both educational and entertaining. Therefore, it is urgent to examine the question of what effect social networks have on their users,
in particular, how the use of social networks affects the academic success of students. This study will discover this information, giving the researchers an opportunity to
explore and gain new knowledge. Furthermore, it can be used for future studies.

  • 1. THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA TOWARDS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF BSBA STUDENTS
  • 2. INTRODUCTION • Social media networking is the method of communication that is utilized the most frequently. It is being utilized by people from all walks of life. The public was open to social media. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+, Flickr, snapchat, vine, and Tumblr are among the many online networking platforms. Social media has become the fastest-growing form of association due to its capacity to rapidly disseminate useful information. Many businesses have been affected by social media, but education in general and classroom instruction have been most affected. Over the past few years, there has been a lot of interest in the application of digital technology to education. Academic staff and administrators are often expected to look into options to make sure the learning environment is up-to-date, relevant, and capable of producing graduates with skills that are compatible with the workplace and their career goals. Carrying highly sophisticated computing devices in their pockets, students participate in campus life. These students frequently use these devices for a variety of purposes unrelated to learning, indicating a significant disconnect. Foundations of advanced education are worried that both their staff and understudies are carefully proficient, in the way of learning conveyance or technique for guidance. The online space that students use to connect, share, communicate, and establish or maintain connections with others for the purposes of academic and socialization is referred to as "social media networking usage." The rapid growth of social media networking as a means of communication is primarily due to the successful development of applications for mobile devices.

As shown from table 4 which presents the answers of the respondents to the question “How often do you spend time in your social media?”. Out of 70 respondents, most of them answered “sometimes” with the number of 40 and the percentage of 57% and the ones who responded “sometimes” are 23 students with the percentage of 33%. The data implies that almost of the student respondents are fond of using social media for they have spent a lot of time in using it. The student respondents who only answered “not all the time” are 7 students. Therefore, only 10% of these students are not interested in using social media. Indicator Frequency Percentage All the Time 23 33% Sometimes 40 57% Not all the time 7 10% Total 70 100 %

This means that they do not engage to other activities after class other than spending time in their social media accounts. As stated from the tables above to answer the statement of the problem “what is the average time the students spend on social media”, indicates that the hypothesis stated that “There is no average time spent by the students in using their social media accounts” is null. Therefore, this study shows that the average time spent by the students in using their social media is very high due to the fact that most of their times even during breaks are spent on using social media accounts. Indicator Frequency Percentage Once 10 14% Twice 20 29% Thrice 16 23% More than usual 24 34% Total 70 100 %
  • 16. The Impact of social media on the Academic Performance of the Students Table 7: What is your general average in all subject areas? • 17. Table 8: How much time do you spend studying/doing homework/school activities? Time Frequency Percentage 5-15 minutes 0 0% 30-60 minutes 8 8 % 1hr-5hs 32 46 % More than the usual 32 46 % Total 70 100 % The data from table 8 implies that the student respondents also spend time studying, doing homework and school activities. That is why, they are also academically inclined despite the fact that they are using social media accounts most of the time.
  • 18. Table 9: What is your favorite subject? Subjects Frequency Percentage Mathematics 15 21% English 53 76% Others (Specify:) 2 3 % Total 70 100 %
  • 19. Table 10: What is your hobby? Hobbies Frequency Percentage Internet Surfing 14 20 % Browsing Social Media Account 12 17 % Reading 24 34 % Studying 16 23 % Doing Homework 4 6 % Total 70 100 % The table shows that most of the student respondents also fond of reading and studying. It also means that spending time on social media accounts are one way of conceptualizing ideas and knowledge needed for them to pass academically. Therefore, the hypothesis “time spent on social media negatively impacts academic work” is not accepted for it does not impact negatively the academic performance of the students upon using social media.
  • 20. SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS • The personality trait of a student plays a vital role in analyzing the impact of social media on their academic performance. The present study was designed to find the difference between extraversion and introversion personality types in students for four identified factors of social media and their impact on students’ academic performance. The education level and gender were also added to make it more comprehensive. The implications of this study are useful for institutions, students, teachers and policymakers. • This study will help the institutions to identify the right mix of social media based on the personality, education level and gender of the students. For example, technological challenges are faced by all students. It is important for the institutions to identify the challenges such as cyberbullying, security and privacy issues and accordingly frame the training sessions for all undergraduate and postgraduate students. These training sessions will help students with extraversion and introversion to come out from possible technological hassles and will create a healthy ecosystem.

  • 23. ABSTRACT • Students are utilizing open social practices like blogging, as well as social media like Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and Flickr, in the classroom for the purpose of facilitating convenient communication with members of their peer group and, potentially, with members of the class who are interested in the same subject as them and subject matter experts. Because these social media are typically accessible to the general public, it is necessary to carefully consider the potential dangers posed by their accessibility, as well as to maintain ongoing communication with students in order to address academic concerns and address any issues that may arise regarding the use of these platforms. • The objective of this study is to assess the effect of social media on students’ academic performance presupposes the following: To determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of the following: Age, Gender, Year Level. To determine the average time on social media use and to know the impact of social media on the academic performance of the students. • Social networks are becoming more popular among college, states and university students and are a new way of spending free time and serve as a separate channel for finding the necessary information, both educational and entertaining. Therefore, it is urgent to examine the question of what effect social networks have on their users, in particular, how the use of social networks affects the academic success of students. This study will discover this information, giving the researchers an opportunity to explore and gain new knowledge. Furthermore, it can be used for future studies.
