New St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome underwent major reconstruction in the 16th century to replace the old St Peter's Basilica. Led by architects like Bramante, Michelangelo, Maderno, and Bernini over more than 100 years, the new basilica was built in Renaissance and Baroque styles. Its massive dome, four piers, and vaults work together to support the structure. The basilica's nave, transepts, and apse form a Latin cross floor plan and house numerous artistic works and tombs.
