1. Flash or Parallel ADC

2. • Flash ADC is use to convert Analog to Digital.

3. • Comparator compares two voltages value and give
output high (1) or low (0).

4. • In this comparator the inverting terminal (-) value is
higher than non inverting (+) terminal.

5. • So the output is low (0).

6. • In this comparator the inverting terminal (-) value is
lower than non inverting (+) terminal.

7. • So the output is high (1).

9. • Flash ADC is simple and fast but the precision of
flash ADC is less.

10. • Flash ADC is useful in large band width application.

11. • It simply consists of resisters, comparator, priority
encoder, voltage regulator etc.

12. • Each resistor having same value is use.

13. • The disadvantage of Flash ADC is that for high resolution it
requires large number of comparators also it consume large
power and it is bigger in size.

14. • N-bit flash ADC consists of 𝟐 𝑵
resisters and (𝟐 𝑵
−𝟏)
comparators.

15. • Means if it is 3 bit Flash ADC then 𝟐 𝟑 = 8 resisters
and (𝟐 𝟑−𝟏) = 𝟕 comparators are required.

16. • And if it is 4 bit Flash ADC then 𝟐 𝟒
= 16 resisters
and (𝟐 𝟒−𝟏) = 𝟏𝟓 comparators are required.

17. • And if it is 8 bit Flash ADC then 𝟐 𝟖 = 256 resisters
and (𝟐 𝟖−𝟏) = 𝟐𝟓𝟓 comparators are required.

18. • The input voltage (Vin) is applied to non inverting (+) terminal of
comparator and reference voltage is applied to inverting (-)
terminal of comparator.

19. • The process is parallel so it is fast and also called
parallel ADC.

20. • Sample and hold is not required in this method of
ADC.
