New Media & Society Education in an online environment Professor Mr. Nicholas Jankowski Jure Pogačar Ljubljana, June 2010
Education in online environment Research question: How does online environment contribute to educational process??? - How does education in online environment work - How it changes traditional educatonal environment - Were these changes generally accepted among users and society
EDUCATIONAL PROCESS TRADITIONAL - teacher -textbook/materials -classroom -physical presence of students in a classroom ONLINE -teacher -e-materials, articles, e-books no classroom no physical presence Everything by using online communicational tools (e-mail, blog, web-page, chat)
EDUCATIONAL PROCESS Traditional educational environment is getting replaced by some other alternative environment; ONLINE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT Technological invention (computer/internet) has made a major impact on education and eradicate literacy issues worldwide. Nevertheless, books are still in use; still somehow irreplacable.
EDUCATIONAL PROCESS With the invention of “www” as a mode of information dissemination, experts predicted that the online education would be the “KILLER APP” for traditional educational environment (Sonwalker, 2008: 44). Online education – should be a replacement for in-class education (assumption!!!)
TYPES – online educational process as “add-to” process as a “synchronous” process as a “asynchronous” process (according to Taylor, 2002)
ONLINE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT BENEFITS -in demand -new educational directives -challenge or hard task -provides sources of supplementary materials -using multimedia to enhance lessons -teachers can reach students in different geo areas and time zones -speed of updating course materials LIMITATIONS -requires more effort -no pedagogical framework provided -effort depends on creativitiy and technical knowledge -hard to control student’s attendance -small motivation for learning -possibility og toggling during the session
CONCLUSION Online educational environment has bright future. Many education istitutes will turn to online learning for very sustainable reason. It gives schools the ability to extend their learning programs beyond their locations. For universities and schools online courses can reduce costs, less time is spent for effective education and productivity is increased. Taylor says that online educational process can contribute great benefit to educational process. It is the opportunity to build global networks of colleges, despite the fact that not all courses can be effectively transformed from a classroom experience to a totally computer-based learning environment (Taylor, 2002)
