After a major overhaul three years ago, the University of Michigan Medical School’s flagship website for prospective students was getting glowing feedback. Great news, right? But … now what? What comes after “good”?
This talk presents a case study of how we dug in to a new round of user research to deepen our understanding of the application journey of prospective medical students and present the next iteration of an already successful site.
With the journalist’s question of “what did you know, when?” we mapped the information-seeking behavior of prospective students, and learned how the lens of time could give us new insights into how to organize and present information to users.

Virginia Commonwealth University implemented a program called BLING that uses clickers to anonymously survey students about their drinking behaviors to help correct misperceptions. A study found that students who participated in the clicker intervention reduced their drinking and inaccurate beliefs more than those who received a traditional lecture. The document advocates that clickers provide a safe, anonymous way for students to share sensitive information that can then be immediately displayed and discussed to increase awareness of issues related to drug and alcohol use on campuses.

Effect of online social networking sites on student engagement and achievement
This paper reviews research on the relationship between online social networking sites (SNSs) and student engagement and achievement. Some research has found positive connections, with SNSs increasing engagement through collaboration and interaction, but negatively impacting achievement through distraction. Other studies found negative relationships, with SNS use linked to lower engagement and performance. Much of the research also shows no conclusive evidence of impacts either way. Overall, SNS participation seems to positively correlate with engagement but negatively with achievement. Further research is still needed to better understand this complex relationship between emerging technologies, student behaviors, and academic outcomes.

Student Perspectives of Assessment Strategies in Online Courses

Abstract
Engaging professional adults in an online environment is a common challenge for online
instructors. Often the temptation or commonly used approach is to mirror face-to-face strategies
and practices. One premise of this study is that all strategies used in an online environment are
assessment strategies, and as such should be considered for their value in measuring student
experiences. This research study investigated student responses within a principal preparation
course to the use of twelve assessment strategies that included: work samples, “Twitter”
summaries, audio recordings, traditional papers, screencast/videos using “YouTube”, group
projects, open discussion, paired discussion, response to video, field experiences, quizzes, and
interviews. The redesigned course used in this research allowed the researchers to experiment
with both traditional and innovative strategies within an online environment to determine how
students perceive the value of each assessment strategy. Student experiences were measured in
terms of level of enjoyment, level of engagement, and the extent to which students believed the
assessments would result in the creation of knowledge that could be transferred to future
professional practice. The results indicate that students prefer assignments that are less-
traditional and which fully incorporate the technological tools available.
Online teaching is here to stay. With each passing semester, more college courses—and
even entire degree programs—move online. The question is no longer one of whether teaching
online is effective; the question now rests on how to maximize its effectiveness. Answering that
question, or maximizing the effectiveness of online teaching and learning, requires online
instructors to shift their attention “from the technology tools to the pedagogical practices and use
of the tools” (Redmond, 2011, p. 1058) and “to make a transformational shift in their approach to
teaching from one of disseminating information to one of creating learning environments where
students co-construct knowledge through interactions” (Vaughn, 2010, p. 61). Johnson and
Aragon (2003) addressed the issue head on: “the challenge for instructional designers is to devise
ways to incorporate the most effective and innovative instructional strategies in courses delivered
over the Internet” (p. 33). This study accepted that challenge and examined the experiences of
students engaging in a variety of teaching through assessment strategies embedded in the
redesign of an online educational leadership course.

Giving Back: Exploring Service-Learning in an Online Environment

Service-Learning (SL) as an instructional method is growing in popularity for giving back to the community while connecting the experience to course content. However, little has been published on using SL for online business students. This study highlights an exploratory mixed-methods, multiple case study of an online business leadership and ethics course utilizing SL as a pedagogical teaching tool with 81 students. Results from the study noted that hours completed exceeded those assigned and students identified outcomes for themselves, their university, and nonprofit organizations where they served. The outcomes of this study mirrored those identified by students in traditional face-to-face courses underscoring the value of SL projects in online courses in higher education.
Students nature
This document discusses student engagement at school based on results from PISA 2000. It finds that there is considerable variation among countries and schools in levels of student engagement and disaffection. Some key findings are that engagement and academic performance do not necessarily go hand-in-hand, as many students with strong literacy performance are still disaffected. The analyses also identify some school factors related to engagement, and show that strong student engagement does not have to come at the expense of reading performance.
Solving the TEF Through Student Centricity
The document discusses strategies for improving student retention and success through a student-centric approach. Using social media to support learning in higher education
My keynote presentation considers how social media and digital technologies can be utilised effectively to enhance both informal and formal learning. Drawing upon the 5C Framework (Nerantzi and Beckingham 2014) I will share examples of how social media is used to connect, communicate, curate, collaborate and create; and through a student-staff partnership called ‘SMASH’ (Social Media for Academic Studies at Hallam) how with my students we have explored how social media can be used for ‘learning activities’ within and beyond the classroom, to ‘organise learning’ using relevant social media tools to curate and organise information, and the importance of ‘showcasing learning’ to enable students to openly share outcomes and projects.
Writing and Rhetoric in the Field of Study Abroad Outreach and Advocacy
This Disciplinary Report focuses on the types of rhetoric used by three major sectors of study abroad outreach and advocacy, a field in which I am interested in building a career: Program Providers, Advocacy Organizations, and University Departments. Close attention is paid to the persuasive appeals of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos within certain sectors, as they vary in importance and application, depending on the audience. Furthermore, the role of social media has become increasingly important in the field, and much of the report documents the growing need for writers to organize and manage the content strategy of all communications and discourse representative of the sector.
Reliability vs. Authority: Credibility Assessment of Highschool Students
This paper examines the practices Austrian high school students and teachers use to evaluate credibility of online information. It finds that students primarily use Google and Wikipedia to research information for school assignments, often ignoring other sources like books recommended by teachers. Students tend to only briefly scan the top search results from Google without considering additional search terms or going beyond the first page. Both students and teachers take for granted Internet use for schoolwork without guidance on evaluating information reliability. The study aims to understand how school and Internet contexts shape students' information practices and competencies.

Learning analytics has recently burst onto the educational scene. A process that helps optimize the teaching and learning environment for students, educators, and administrators, learning analytics has proven it is more than a passing trend. This session will offer a primer on learning analytics and share examples of how libraries are getting involved.
Giving Back: Exploring Service-Learning in an Online Environment

Service-Learning (SL) as an instructional method is growing in popularity for giving back to the community while connecting the experience to course content. However, little has been published on using SL for online business students. This study highlights an exploratory mixed-methods, multiple case study of an online business leadership and ethics course utilizing SL as a pedagogical teaching tool with 81 students. Results from the study noted that hours completed exceeded those assigned and students identified outcomes for themselves, their university, and nonprofit organizations where they served. The outcomes of this study mirrored those identified by students in traditional face-to-face courses underscoring the value of SL projects in online courses in higher education.
Students nature
This document discusses student engagement at school based on results from PISA 2000. It finds that there is considerable variation among countries and schools in levels of student engagement and disaffection. Some key findings are that engagement and academic performance do not necessarily go hand-in-hand, as many students with strong literacy performance are still disaffected. The analyses also identify some school factors related to engagement, and show that strong student engagement does not have to come at the expense of reading performance.
Solving the TEF Through Student Centricity
The document discusses strategies for improving student retention and success through a student-centric approach. It argues that universities should orient resources, people and processes around the potential impact on students. This means nurturing a sense of belonging, making it easy for students to connect with support systems, and identifying disengaged students through analytics. Specific tactics proposed include personalized alerts and success networks, integrated appointment booking, and custom reporting to flag at-risk students. Case studies show improvements in retention rates, faculty participation in early alerts, and graduation rates at institutions that adopted these student-centric strategies.

1) The AEIOU project aimed to develop a recommendation service using activity data from Welsh educational institutes to increase awareness of Welsh academic research.
2) Focus groups found that undergraduates valued recommendations from successful peers while postgraduates preferred recommendations from trusted sources like tutors.
3) By reporting on usage data and promoting research through recommendations, the repository could help publicize Welsh research, improve collaboration between institutes, and attract potential students and visitors long-term to support sustainable excellence in Welsh higher education research.

Using social media to support learning in higher education
My keynote presentation considers how social media and digital technologies can be utilised effectively to enhance both informal and formal learning. Drawing upon the 5C Framework (Nerantzi and Beckingham 2014) I will share examples of how social media is used to connect, communicate, curate, collaborate and create; and through a student-staff partnership called ‘SMASH’ (Social Media for Academic Studies at Hallam) how with my students we have explored how social media can be used for ‘learning activities’ within and beyond the classroom, to ‘organise learning’ using relevant social media tools to curate and organise information, and the importance of ‘showcasing learning’ to enable students to openly share outcomes and projects.
Writing and Rhetoric in the Field of Study Abroad Outreach and Advocacy
This Disciplinary Report focuses on the types of rhetoric used by three major sectors of study abroad outreach and advocacy, a field in which I am interested in building a career: Program Providers, Advocacy Organizations, and University Departments. Close attention is paid to the persuasive appeals of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos within certain sectors, as they vary in importance and application, depending on the audience. Furthermore, the role of social media has become increasingly important in the field, and much of the report documents the growing need for writers to organize and manage the content strategy of all communications and discourse representative of the sector.
Reliability vs. Authority: Credibility Assessment of Highschool Students
This paper examines the practices Austrian high school students and teachers use to evaluate credibility of online information. It finds that students primarily use Google and Wikipedia to research information for school assignments, often ignoring other sources like books recommended by teachers. Students tend to only briefly scan the top search results from Google without considering additional search terms or going beyond the first page. Both students and teachers take for granted Internet use for schoolwork without guidance on evaluating information reliability. The study aims to understand how school and Internet contexts shape students' information practices and competencies.

Hybrid education has the potential to be more inclusive if developed well. It requires considering diverse student needs, backgrounds, and ensuring all students feel safe and have equal access to learn. However, increased use of online and hybrid approaches may exacerbate teacher workload without support. Assessing student learning and providing practical training also present challenges in online and hybrid environments. Moving forward, it is important to focus on privacy, ethics, and addressing biases when using learning analytics tools to understand student learning.

The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
