Exploring aspects of collaborative, cooperative and community learning in relation to networked online spaces with consideration of the benefits of formal, informal and non-formal learning.
Digital solutions are creating another platform for students to fully strengthen their abilities to grasp the subject. When students work exclusively independently that environment can create gaps in their learning process.
You might be one of the teachers who is excited about the possibilities or apprehensive and fearful of the seemingly overwhelming task in front of you how to manage your classroom, students and the devices AND at the same time use them to improve student learning.
What are some educational models to consider when implementing iPads in the classroom?
How do you handle classroom management?

Blogging is inherently a platform that encourages communication and reflection. We are taking “blogging” beyond a technology platform, and seeing it as a shift directly related to teaching and learning in modern times. It becomes a platform for learning, creating, reflecting and sharing with a global audience. The transparency of sharing one’s successes and failures openly while being a responsible digital citizen embodies risk-taking and, at the same time, opens up and invites global feedback and perspective in to develop critical thinkers.
Blogging can support the strategies, techniques and approaches to facilitate the learning in your classroom no matter what grade level, age group and subject area. Blogging supports four primary areas:

I will be talking about the Cloud and how 'Thinking differently' about how to make use of the Cloud is much more than saving costs on IT infrastructure. Cloud allows access to big a immense amount of data (every two days the Web Doubles). In this pool of information are patterns and vast stores of intelligence. Presently in 2012 we are on the Frontier of Singularity- Software like Apple's Siri uses the Cloud to find Patterns, (versus traditional IBM Brute Force Computing). Behavior Driven Development used in software creation describes how the software should behave (after built) in plain easy to understand text. This serves as the story about the purpose of the technology, an aid and objectives for the engineers to build it, and as a test for the outcome. Using Behavior Driven development (Human Stories) with Cloud (remember that massive pool of information) lets you have amazingly fast cycles of evolution, each cycle passing or failing then improving.
Do you understand where this is heading? We are getting smarter faster- at an exponential (doubling) rate. In April of 2012 This is happening today, the wave is already cresting. This is not something that is ABOUT to happen, its already happened -and the successful companies and brands are doing it. Every Business is now a Software Business. Learning How2Learn- Change- Rethink-Amplify
We live in a time and space when it is is truer than ever that "change is the only constant”.
What are some cultural shifts in our fast changing world, that have an impact on our own learning as educators and leaders? How do we adapt to this in a school environment? Can we dwell on our experience and degrees as educators and continue to stay relevant? Learning how to learn might be the most important skill we did not learn when we were in school.
Do you have to be a tech guru to be literate in a digital world? Or are the ones who are self- motivated, life-long learners and the ones who are accepting of and embracing change the ones flourishing in the modern world? We will take a look at the urgency of shifting school culture to a culture of learning how to learn. Let's talk about LEARNING, not technology!
This presentation will give you an overview of Boston's edtech ecosystem, including information about LearnLaunch, an organization that is bringing together Boston's edtech community.
The modern American school is a failure. To most of us, this is not a surprise, we have lived it, our children live it. To some of us, this is a tragedy.

3 Ingredients for an Ed Tech EcosystemAllison Baum
What has to happen for an ed tech ecosystem to thrive? Why have we seen so much innovation in education in the US over the past 5 years and how can that be replicated globally?
Blog entry with links here: http://www.reachcap.com/blog/post/2016-edtech-outlook
It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since we published our first ReimaginED report. When we first drafted ReimaginED, we set out to expose systemic challenges in our nation’s K-12 education system and to highlight some of the innovative solutions edtech entrepreneurs were developing to address these challenges. In last year’s report, we showcased ways technology could help our school system become an escalator to opportunity for all.
A lot has changed in three years, including our spinout from NewSchools to Reach Capital. Edtech investment has hit an all time high with a variety of new funders entering the space. As the market begins to mature, global edtech brands are emerging with solutions that are improving educational outcomes and serving millions of students, teachers, and families.
Even with these changes, however, a lot remains the same. The escalator to social mobility remains broken with unequal access to quality education. Meeting individual student needs is still a challenge and grows more pressing as children in US public schools are more diverse than ever. Moreover, our education system is not designed to prepare children for the demands of today's knowledge economy. We're still stuck in a system that is largely manufacturing-based, which falls short on important skills such as coding, creativity, and synthesis. All these challenges and more have led to increasing demands on teachers as both their role and their responsibilities evolve, with little to no support in the transition.
This year’s publication, rebranded as “Reach Capital’s 2016 Edtech Outlook”, touches on these persisting challenges, while also highlighting key drivers that make us optimistic about the potential of technology to improve access and opportunity for kids. This year, our publication is not a roundup of everything in K-12 edtech, but rather our perspective on the challenges, opportunities and promising solutions in the space that we find most compelling. If you're looking for a full report on the state of K-12 edtech, our friends at Edsurge in partnership with AT&T Aspire have recently published a state of edtech report and we encourage you to check it out.
Given our unique vantage point, we also provide a peek “around the corner” into emerging solutions that align with our mission. We continue to see a need for more innovations in critical areas like English Language Learner instruction and Social Emotional Learning. We look forward to finding and supporting talented, mission-driven entrepreneurs innovating in these and other areas that will improve access and opportunity for kids.
Thank you to co-authors Chian Gong, Aditya Kaddu, and Jennifer Wu as well as the entire Reach team for their guidance and feedback.
A possible framework for how to think about one's desired impact in education technology, relative to the various entities in the space -- and some basic career advice. Shared with Berkeley Haas MBAs in Nov. 2013.
If you are an entrepreneur eager to revolutionise education, figuring out how to make money is a daunting task. In this workshop, in conjunction with Education Entrepreneurs and Startup Weekend EDU, we explore the market opportunity for edtech startups in Asia, as well as different business models in education, the advantages and disadvantages of each, and some inspiring examples of start ups that have found success thus far.
Research tells us that engaging in meaningful experiences helps learning “stick.” As educators, how do we provide technology rich, creative, collaborative, problem solving opportunities for our students? We are already experts in our content areas and we must add NETS to our ever-growing list of standards and teaching responsibilities. No worries, it is easier than you think! Let’s take a quick look at how the TPACK framework will help us understand our role as teachers in a growing world of technology. Then, learn how to use readily available tools and some of the Internet’s vast resources to create significant learning opportunities for your students.

Beyond the walled garden - the story of how one learner used social media for...Helen Crump
Presentation at Galway Symposium on Higher Education 2013
http://www.nuigalway.ie/celt/conference/conference13.html
Here, I offer to relate my learning story, about how I discovered Twitter as a tool for professional networking and development and how I subsequently went on to discover open education, take advantage of the new ways of learning online in networks and communities, and to develop as a digitally literate learner/practitioner.
It is thought that an autobiographical narrative, such as this, will serve to bring the lived experience to the discussion and make concepts regarding change and “thinking differently” within Higher Education real. This story encompasses a range of new theories and practices: social media/ social networking for teaching and learning, personal learning networks [PLNs],
digital literacies ‐ tools, practices and identity, blogging for reflecting and learning, MOOCs, open education, digital age learning theories ‐ connectivism, rhizomatic learning, heutagogy and open badges.
Biographical information:
Helen Crump is a literacies practitioner and a recent graduate of St. Angela’s College, Sligo where she completed an M.A. in Technology, Learning, Innovation and Change. Her dissertation, “To tweet or not to tweet?”, took a New LiteracyStudies perspective to position the use of Twitter as a social practice and enquire into the disposition of Higher Education lecturers towards the adoption of Twitter practices.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

I could be here talking about a thousand tech tools, but with Roberta Orlando, from Richmond here, I can’t compete, so I’ll leave you with her wisdom and inspiration.
I could also be talking about my professional trajectory up to this photo full of ipads and my passion about technology to bring people together, but then you can go online and learn more about me. I’m sure here in this room, there are many more interesting, exciting lives and stories to be shared.
I could be talking about the power of technology for the masses, for us to reach more people than ever before.
However, my focus in not on the headcount, the many students we have, the big classes. My focus is in the small, the micro world, the hearcount, the ways we can really use technology to reach every single student we have in many different, engaging, motivating ways.
In fact, our topic today, hot topics in ELT related to Ed Tech could leave us here for many days or years, for there are so many ways to explore emerging trends but I’ve decided to bring my share to you today, my slice of reality. So, I’ll focus not on tons of ideas, but on a few that might give you some hints for your next class.
My slice of reality and the hot topics will really focus on technology as connector. And I’ll focus in two levels of these connections: students – teacher – the world/teachers-teachers-the world

When we think about mlearning, Mobile Learning, you might think immediately of cellphones. In fact, it can be related to any device we have. It can be a simple digital camera, laptop…According to the Horizon Report prepared by a group of specialists, Mobile learning is becoming an integral part of K-12 education, as it is increasingly common for students to own and use portable devices. With easy to use, touchscreen interfaces, even the youngest children can easily pick up a tablet or smartphone and interact with it almost immediately. Mobile devices are gateways to endless learning, collaboration, and productivity fostered by the Internet. In recent years, schools have been implementing one-to-one and BYOD strategies to take advantage of mobile technologies that are more accessible and pervasive with each passing year. (edtechreview)

With digital media the world has truly become flat.
Some of us still look for institutional backup for professional development. Is it the only way to go nowadays with all the connectivity we have and digital possibilities? NO. Now, we have the chance to develop our own PLEs and PLNs - Personal Learning Environments and Personal Learning Networks through digital media that has given us inifinite possibilities of connections. You can extend your own education through a self-structured and self-organized learning environment.

We are essential, connectors (within the cognitive and affective level) in the learning ecosystem, but we need to keep ourselves relevant, updated and connected, collaborating towards a common goal: learning, discovery, change. We need to cultivate interest.
