Building High-Quality Apps for Google AssistantPeter Friese
In this session, I will show you how to build great apps for the assistant using Dialogflow and Actions on Google. Building Actions with Dialogflow is deceptively easy, but building great apps that meet the quality bar requires in-depth knowledge of the design guidelines we defined. In this talk, I'm going to walk you through the best practices for VUI design and will show you how to apply these to your Assistant apps. We’ll cover topics such as handling new and returning users, robust error handling for no-input and no-match situations, and being able to repeat information for the user. We will also look at strategies for implementing multi-lingual apps and how to design for multiple surfaces at the same time.

There are various soft skills I've learnt over my career. I've gotten better at reporting, at presenting, telling people no... But none end up in demand as much as being able to debug. There are always going to be things you don't know and going back to first principles to pick them apart is incredibly useful skill.
It's not about being able to program, rather how to pick apart the common problems to make you more effective. I want to take people through how to think like this, everything from learning the language and keeping a summary swipe file, to how to breakdown, test and re-create.
This was a presentation I gave about how to design a product people will love. My goal was to keep it concise, practical, and include real examples.
Note: I found this on my hard drive and decided to upload it, some day I'll actually put some time into making it look nice :)

Reading Journal Instructions
Reading journals are used to help readers think about, digest, summarize, question, clarify, critique, and
remember what is read. They are one way to critically read a text and help improve reading comprehension.
You will need to keep a reading journal this semester, filling in each entry as you read your assigned texts
for homework. You may choose to annotate any assigned texts , but please focus your annotations only on
texts assigned for this class.
The following explains how to format each entry:
Left Column:
The left column is used for direct quotations, paraphrases, or vocabulary words from the text being read. Copy
the quote and include quotation marks and the page number in parenthesis.
A quote is when sentence are copied directly (word for word) from the text. Quotation marks (“ “) are placed at
the beginning and end of the passage.
Right Column:
The right column is used for commenting on quotes in the left column. The comments on the right may include:
• what the passage reminds you of
• feelings toward the author’s words
• words or passages not understood
• words or passages that look important
• connections among passages or sections of the work
• If it’s a vocabulary word, the right column should have the definition

The academic year is nearly over and we want to encourage our learners to reflect on success and what helps them achieve it. Our B2 First and C1 Advanced students will read about and discuss routines of successful people. Our A2 Key and B1 Preliminary learners will talk about the habits and routines that work for them while they practise all four skills. The younger ones will be able to show how much progress they have made when describing their favourite toy and telling a story. Happy teaching!
This is a compilation of the rest of the video and audio projects (that can be made into video projects) I have done over the past few semesters. All or some of these can be used for a Video Portfolio.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. WARMUP Do you watch Netflix?
What do you think of
Netflix as a company?
4. Vocabulary:Rolling out new features
Netflix's Shuffle Play.
When you sign on to Netflix, the first thing you see is rows upon rows of available TV shows to watch. How
do you even know which one to pick without getting stressed out? Netflix have tried to solve this problem
with their brand-new shuffle feature. The feature will help people avoid scrolling through menus trying
to find a TV show that could grab their interest. All you need to do is to boot up Netflix and the algorithm
will start playing something you might be interested in. It can be a movie you stopped watching halfway
through or a TV series you have never heard of but are likely to enjoy. According to Netflix, the idea
behind the feature is to "make it easier for members to find something to watch." Shuffle Play serves up
movies or TV shows similar to what you've already watched, or within genres you frequently view. It will
also select from shows you've saved in "My List."
Some people have said that this will make Netflix resemble traditional TV where the user needs to press
a button and technology will take care of the rest.
The big question now is what Netflix will end up calling the feature. During its presentation, co-CEO Reed
Hastings joked that they might call it “I’m Feeling Lucky,” after the Google search feature that skips
straight to the top search result. But Peters quickly shot down that idea.
“We’re going to come up with something better than that, so stand by for this. You’ll see it when it rolls
out,” Peters said.

deciding which TV show / movie to
watch?
2. Have computer algorithms ever
recommended something really
great to you?
3. Are you concerned about
companies learning too much about
their users’ preferences?
6. Vocabulary. Tesla criticism
Critics have attacked Tesla’s Model 3 for years. One of such critics has recently said
that Model 3 has terrible flaws and isn’t release-ready. Elon Musk has personally
replied to that comment on Twitter saying “I thought your criticism was accurate”.
Musk also admitted that it might not be a good idea to buy a new model right after it
comes out. According to Elon, it is super hard to get every detail right when you’re
focused on meeting your production targets. However Tesla has shown significant
improvement in how quickly they can process feedback and implement fixes. One
person compared a Model 3 that he bought last year with a Model 3 someone
purchased a month later. “I just don’t understand”, he said. “Mine had problems. His
was perfect.”
Musk has pointed out that Tesla has always found ways to solve issues very quickly
and that there is never enough time to find a fix all issues in advance before the
product goes live.
7. Questions
1. Have you ever had to deal with
negative feedback from users? How
did you handle it?
2. What is your opinion on Elon
Musk? Can you imagine being in his
shoes?
8. Grammar. Present Perfect
We have deployed two new features this month
I have already completed the project
1 When we give status updates (the focus is on the
quality and quantity, not on when something
happened)
We need Present Perfect
*We don’t use Present Perfect with the word “when”: When have you completed the project - not possible
When did you complete the project - is correct
9. Grammar. Present Perfect
Have you already spoken to him?
I have not gotten a call from him yet
2 With words: ever, never, just, already, yet (for negative
sentences)
We need Present Perfect
10. Grammar. Present Perfect
I have lived here for 10 years (and I still live here)
She has worked at this company for 5 months
He’s been unemployed for almost 2 years
3 With words like “work”, “live”, “want”, “be”, “know” (+some
others) when we talk about durations (something started
in the past and still continues)
We need Present Perfect
11. Formula
Affirmative:
I, you, we, they + have + past participle / 3rd form:
We have completed the assignment
He, she, it + has + past participle / 3rd form:
She has known me for years
Questions:
Have / has + subject + past participle / 3rd form?
Have you seen this?
Negations:

E.g. “driven without a license” -
“Have you ever driven without a license?”
*Make sure to give detailed answers
Ask your peers questions to find out
whether they have done any of the
following things:
★ Received a terrible gift
★ Tried to learn how to draw
★ Built something with your own hands
★ Worked abroad
★ Talked to a stranger at a party
★ Stayed up for 2 days straight
★ Learned the lyrics to a song in a
foreign language
★ Expressed your honest opinion in a

15. Soft skills
Giving feedback
Here are some good phrases you can use to praise or
criticise someone
Praise:
I am happy with (how this looks)
I really liked how you (implemented this)
I am very impressed with how you (solved this issue)
I appreciate that you (are always willing to help)
Critique:
I’m not sure (it will work well)
I don’t think (this is the best way to it)
One thing you could improve is (your knowledge of
marketing)
It would be great if you could (give me a more detailed
feedback)
16. Practice
Imagine that one of the 4 people
below has asked you to give them
your feedback. Think of some
positive and negative things you
could highlight for them
Jeff Bezos
Elon Musk
Donald Trump
Tim Cook
