In this lesson, students will listen to the story "Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?" and then illustrate their own animal to use in a class parody of the story. The lesson will begin with reading the story aloud and discussing similar books. Students will then draw their animal in small groups and present them to the class. Finally, the class will take turns stating their animal and the story's refrain to create their own version of the story using the animals the students drew.

Overview of Lesson
In this lesson, students will listen to the book “Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?”
and pick their own animal to illustrate in a class parody of the original story.
Objectives Standards
 While listening to the story, students should be
able to recognize repetition by joining in
saying the refrain at least 3 times.
 After the story, students should be able to
illustrate one unique animal of their choice.
 During class parody of story, students should
be able to state their animal and the refrain
of the story when it is their turn.

1. Introduce book, reading the author and illustrator
a. Ask children if the book reminds them of any other book they
have seen or read?
b. Discuss similar books or relate to Brown Bear, Brown Bear
What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You
Hear?
2. Read the story aloud to the class through the display of the story on
the SMART Board
3. At end of story, tell students, “Think about some animals that you
like. We will be drawing our own animals during small group to use
in our own class version of Panda Bear, Panda Bear What Do You
See?”

1. Gather 5 children at the small group table
2. Present each child with a sheet of paper
3. Ask the children to brainstorm about animals that they like, know
about, or encounter in everyday life.
4. Ask the children to illustrate the animal for the class parody of
Panda Bear, Panda Bear What Do You See?
5. Probe children about possible words they could add to their page
(Suggestions: Animal name, story refrain, etc.)
6. Collect the pages to use at closing circle time.

Closing Circle Time

1. Gather entire class for closing circle time.
2. Distribute pictures to each child.
3. Have children go around the circle and name the animal they
drew. Write the names of the animals in order on the SMART Board.
4. Practice the refrain and rhythm of the story as a class using class-
created examples (Ex. “I see that Claire drew a snake. Amelia is
next to her and she drew a koala. Let’s all say ‘Snake, snake, What
do you see? I see a koala looking at me!’”)
5. Allow the class to practice the parody once or twice,
