What we are learning about: Colors
Overview of Lesson
Children will listen to the story Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni. Afterwards, children
will explore creating different colors by mixing primary colors in containers to create
secondary and tertiary colors.
Goals/Aims/Objectives Standards
After this lesson, children will be able to
- Identify one event that occurred in Little Blue
and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni
- Use a pipette to transfer colors from one
container to another
- Experiment by mixing two or more colors
together to make two new colors
Science
SC.1.32 Use age appropriate scientific equipment
(e.g., magnifying glasses, thermometer, scales) when
participating in scientific experiences.
Physical Development
P.4.6 Use objects as tools.
Mathematics
M.6.8 Move objects from one container to another.
English/Language Arts
ELA.3.42 Watch and listen to a story to completion or
for ten or more minutes.
ELA.4.53 Follow simple directions with prompts.
ELA.4.82 Tell one thing that happens in a familiar story.
Body of Lesson
Opening
10 minutes
Read Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni
Children will be introduced to Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni.
 Today we will be reading Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni.
Teacher will read story and ask children to identify events that occurred.
 What happened in the story? [Children respond]
Teacher will help children transition to color mixing activity.
 In Little Blue and Little Yellow blue and yellow mixed together to
make green. On the table there are colors that you can mix
together.
Activities
10 minutes
Color Mixing Activity
Tables will have pipettes, colored water in containers, and shallow
mixing containers. Children will put on smocks and transition to the large
table. They will be gathered at the table for a teacher demonstration on
how to use a pipette.
 We will be using a special tool today that looks like this. [Shows
pipette]
 It is called a pipette. Scientists use these to mix liquids together.
You use it by squeezing the air out, placing it in the water, letting
go, and then squirting it into the new container. [Demonstrates]
 You can use the pipette to mix colors together. What color should
we add to the first? [Children respond; teacher demonstrates]
 Now you can begin to mix your own colors.
Children are free to explore mixing colors by using pipettes to transfer
colors into shallow containers. The teacher will engage children in
discussions about what they are observing and manipulating.
Closing
5 minutes
Summarize the Experience
After engaging in the activity, children will be gathered in the circle time
area. The teacher will discuss with them what they observed and
manipulated.
 I saw lots of color mixing. How did you mix your colors? [Children
respond]
 What kinds of colors did you make? [Children respond]
The teacher will summarize experiences and encourage children to
further explore color mixing.
 It seems that many of you enjoyed mixing colors. The color mixing
materials will be in the science area and more books on color
mixing will be in the library.
How will you check for understanding/assess learning?
Children will be assessed through teacher observation. The teacher will listen to children as they respond to
questions about the text. While children are engaged in the color mixing activity, the teacher will discuss with
them what they observe and manipulate. She will have a notebook and record what children say, what
children are doing, and which colors they mix and make. She will also photograph and video record for use
in a learning profile.
