Katie Russell student taught in a kindergarten classroom at Pinon Community School on the Navajo Nation in Pinon, Arizona. The small, rural school served mostly Native American students and had significant needs. Katie transformed the classroom schedule to include more structured morning meeting, reading, and intervention blocks. She also introduced new curriculum resources to strengthen instruction in phonics, phonemic awareness, and guided reading since the existing curriculum lacked these elements. The changes aimed to improve academic outcomes for the students.
