This study assesses the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals in three species of fresh and smoked fish in Lagos, Nigeria. Results indicate varying concentrations of naphthalene and anthracene, with unsmoked scomber japonica displaying the highest levels of both PAHs and several heavy metals, often exceeding WHO permissible limits. The findings highlight potential health risks associated with fish consumption due to elevated toxicant levels resulting from the smoking process.
