FOR ELECTED COMMITTEE
MEMBERS
RESTORATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
INTERNATIONAL
Duties and role of Chairperson
 The role of the Chair is to lead the board of trustees, ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of
the organisation.
 The Chair's role is also to work in partnership with the employees, helping her or him achieve the aims of the
organisation; and to optimise the relationship between the board of Trustees and the staff.
 providing leadership for the board of trustees in their role of setting the strategy and policy of the organisation •
planning the annual cycle of board meetings • setting agendas for board meetings
 chairing board meetings • monitoring that decisions taken at meetings are implemented
 presenting the organisation at functions and meetings, and acting as a spokesperson as appropriate
 • liaising with the employees to keep an overview of the organisation's affairs and providing support as appropriate
 • leading the process of appraising the performance of the employees • sitting on appointment and disciplinary
panels.
Person specification for Chairperson, Vice and
committee members
 Leadership , good 'people' skills ,experience of committee work, tact and diplomacy
 Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences .
 The vice of any role ,deputies in that position and shares responsibility as necessary.
 Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability and willingness to work some unsociable hours (evenings /
weekends) and to occasionally travel country wide to
 Strong knowledge and understanding of international development issues
 Develop IT skills, including Word ,Excel and working to exacting deadline
 Work with Head of Department on a National level to implement national strategizes
Duties and role of Treasurer
 The role of a Treasurer is to maintain an overview of an organisation's financial affairs, ensuring its financial viability
and ensuring that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.
 preparing and presenting financial reports to the board on a monthly basis, • keeping the members aware of its
financial responsibilities • ensuring that the organisation's accounts are prepared in a suitable format
 preparing and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements in collaboration with staff
 advising on the financial implications of the organisation's strategic plan in the form prescribed by the members,
included in the annual report and submitted to the relevant statutory bodies,
 ensuring that the accounts are audited in the manner prescribed by members
 keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities • contributing to the fundraising strategy of
the organisation • making a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting and drawing
attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way
Duties and role of Secretary
 They handle branch administration and work with the branch chair and other leading officers to provide leadership.
They may also be a senior negotiator.
 guiding the branch's development by preparing and implementing a branch organisation and development plan;
 making sure the representation of members within the branch is in accordance with national guidance and in
partnership with regional staff;
 convening and attending all meetings of the branch and branch committees and making sure proper minutes are
kept and circulated;
 making sure branch records are kept in a proper manner;
 supporting, mentoring and encouraging stewards and reps in the branch on an individual and collective basis; co-
ordinating all branch negotiations
 leading the branch committee in making sure that the branch observes the organisation rules, campaigns and
works towards achieving objectives.
Duties and Role of Organising Secretary
 Securing a venue for meetings and completing all logistical arrangement for the branch.
 making sure there is regular communication with branch members, including news of campaigns, negotiations,
issues, branch developments and activities;
 encouraging partnership working within the branch committee and the development of new representatives and
stewards;
 managing the delegation of work to other branch officers and branch staff as appropriate, while providing support
and guidance;
 making sure that branch members are aware of opportunities to take part in the activities of the wider pro-
democracy movement, including self-organisation if appropriate.
Duties & Role Education Officer
 Helps arrange training courses and education programmes for members, stewards, health and safety reps and
branch officers.
 making sure all new stewards and reps receive information about the branch and their role;
 publicising the range of educational and training opportunities available to members and activists, and making sure
that all reps go on appropriate courses;
 talking to existing reps about their ongoing training and development needs;
 organising a plan of training for activists and producing an annual budget to meet its costs;
 keeping records of what training has been undertaken and by whom within the branch;
 negotiating with the employer, along with union learning reps on issues relating to learning including time off;
 supporting and co-ordinating the work of buddies and mentors in the branch.
Duties & Role of Communications Officer
 explaining organisation's policies and providing the information members need to play an active role in their union;
 helping the branch's recruitment and organising;
 supporting organisation's national and regional campaigns;
 creating a positive image for the branch and wider union among members, potential members and the public;
 producing news-sheets, bulletins or digital communication for distribution to branch members;
 making sure branch communications are in the accessible formats members need;
 making sure that centrally and regionally produced publicity, communications and campaign materials are
distributed, as appropriate, to stewards, members and non-members;
 monitoring and liaising with local media.
Duties and role of Fundraising Officer
 Will maintain and work to an accurate personal work-plan of scheduled fundraising activity and proposal
submissions and ensure timely and accurate reporting to donors
 Will write funding proposals for new and existing projects in consultation with Head of Fundraising
 Will take lead responsibility for researching and identifying new ,foundations and sources for fundraising
 The Fundraiser will report to the Head of Fundraising who will hold regular supervision sessions to set targets,
monitor workload and effect post holder performance appraisal, training and development. The Fundraiser will be
expected to work closely with other members of the department and with people in other departments as necessary

  • 1. DUTIES AND ROLES MANUAL FOR ELECTED COMMITTEE MEMBERS RESTORATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNATIONAL
  • 2. Duties and role of Chairperson  The role of the Chair is to lead the board of trustees, ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation.  The Chair's role is also to work in partnership with the employees, helping her or him achieve the aims of the organisation; and to optimise the relationship between the board of Trustees and the staff.  providing leadership for the board of trustees in their role of setting the strategy and policy of the organisation • planning the annual cycle of board meetings • setting agendas for board meetings  chairing board meetings • monitoring that decisions taken at meetings are implemented  presenting the organisation at functions and meetings, and acting as a spokesperson as appropriate  • liaising with the employees to keep an overview of the organisation's affairs and providing support as appropriate  • leading the process of appraising the performance of the employees • sitting on appointment and disciplinary panels.
  • 3. Person specification for Chairperson, Vice and committee members  Leadership , good 'people' skills ,experience of committee work, tact and diplomacy  Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences .  The vice of any role ,deputies in that position and shares responsibility as necessary.  Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability and willingness to work some unsociable hours (evenings / weekends) and to occasionally travel country wide to  Strong knowledge and understanding of international development issues  Develop IT skills, including Word ,Excel and working to exacting deadline  Work with Head of Department on a National level to implement national strategizes

Duties and role of Treasurer  The role of a Treasurer is to maintain an overview of an organisation's financial affairs, ensuring its financial viability and ensuring that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.  preparing and presenting financial reports to the board on a monthly basis, • keeping the members aware of its financial responsibilities • ensuring that the organisation's accounts are prepared in a suitable format  preparing and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements in collaboration with staff  advising on the financial implications of the organisation's strategic plan in the form prescribed by the members, included in the annual report and submitted to the relevant statutory bodies,  ensuring that the accounts are audited in the manner prescribed by members  keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities • contributing to the fundraising strategy of the organisation • making a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way
  • 5. Duties and role of Secretary  They handle branch administration and work with the branch chair and other leading officers to provide leadership. They may also be a senior negotiator.  guiding the branch's development by preparing and implementing a branch organisation and development plan;  making sure the representation of members within the branch is in accordance with national guidance and in partnership with regional staff;  convening and attending all meetings of the branch and branch committees and making sure proper minutes are kept and circulated;  making sure branch records are kept in a proper manner;  supporting, mentoring and encouraging stewards and reps in the branch on an individual and collective basis; co- ordinating all branch negotiations  leading the branch committee in making sure that the branch observes the organisation rules, campaigns and works towards achieving objectives.
  • 6. Duties and Role of Organising Secretary  Securing a venue for meetings and completing all logistical arrangement for the branch.  making sure there is regular communication with branch members, including news of campaigns, negotiations, issues, branch developments and activities;  encouraging partnership working within the branch committee and the development of new representatives and stewards;  managing the delegation of work to other branch officers and branch staff as appropriate, while providing support and guidance;  making sure that branch members are aware of opportunities to take part in the activities of the wider pro- democracy movement, including self-organisation if appropriate.
  • 7. Duties & Role Education Officer  Helps arrange training courses and education programmes for members, stewards, health and safety reps and branch officers.  making sure all new stewards and reps receive information about the branch and their role;  publicising the range of educational and training opportunities available to members and activists, and making sure that all reps go on appropriate courses;  talking to existing reps about their ongoing training and development needs;  organising a plan of training for activists and producing an annual budget to meet its costs;  keeping records of what training has been undertaken and by whom within the branch;  negotiating with the employer, along with union learning reps on issues relating to learning including time off;  supporting and co-ordinating the work of buddies and mentors in the branch.
  • 8. Duties & Role of Communications Officer  explaining organisation's policies and providing the information members need to play an active role in their union;  helping the branch's recruitment and organising;  supporting organisation's national and regional campaigns;  creating a positive image for the branch and wider union among members, potential members and the public;  producing news-sheets, bulletins or digital communication for distribution to branch members;  making sure branch communications are in the accessible formats members need;  making sure that centrally and regionally produced publicity, communications and campaign materials are distributed, as appropriate, to stewards, members and non-members;  monitoring and liaising with local media.
  • 9. Duties and role of Fundraising Officer  Will maintain and work to an accurate personal work-plan of scheduled fundraising activity and proposal submissions and ensure timely and accurate reporting to donors  Will write funding proposals for new and existing projects in consultation with Head of Fundraising  Will take lead responsibility for researching and identifying new ,foundations and sources for fundraising  The Fundraiser will report to the Head of Fundraising who will hold regular supervision sessions to set targets, monitor workload and effect post holder performance appraisal, training and development. The Fundraiser will be expected to work closely with other members of the department and with people in other departments as necessary
