Coupling is one kind of mechanical device which is used to connect two shafts together at their
ends for the purpose of transmitting power.
The primary purpose of couplings is to join two pieces of rotating equipment while permitting
some degree of misalignment or end movement or both.
A rigid coupling is a unit of hardware used to join two shafts within a motor or mechanical system.
It may be used to connect two separate systems, such as a motor and a generator, or to repair a
connection within a single system. A rigid coupling may also be added between shafts to reduce
shock and wear at the point where the shafts meet.
Flanged coupling is a type of rigid coupling in which two co-linear shafts are connected by the
flanges. The coupling enables torque transmission between the shafts & prevents relative rotation
between them.
In the project work a flanged coupling was made by local material available & the analysis of
various stresses & safety factor was also performed.
The outcome of analysis is there’s no danger of failure by pure shear, even if a fatigue strength
reduction factor is included, but this same section may have severe & undefinable bending stresses
on it if the flanges are imperfectly aligned, and they surely will be. The bolts bending was neglected
since they were too small compared to the result outcome.
Finally, the computed factor of safety of the flanges suggest that it would withstand repeated
bending if the misalignment is small.

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a transmission which better fuel efficiency, quieter operation, and a lower mass. Current efforts to reduce the vehicles, fuel consumption in order to protect the environment and save fuel have seen a recent resurgence in CVT research, especially in the automotive allow a continuous variation of the output velocity by adjusting its geometrical configuration. This offers several advantages over traditional transmissions such as industry. The torque of the continuously variable transmission system with friction drive mechanism is transmitted by contacting roller with input and output disks. For the higher transmitted torque, it is necessary to apply large load in order to get higher friction force, which in turn generates severe high stress on the contact surfaces of roller and disks. The 'Toroidal' type CVT system has simple component arrays. This work documents a successfully developed experimental model of a 'Toroidal' continuously variable transmission (CVT) by adjusting its geometrical configuration of CVT design and compared the experimental results of speed, torque and power delivered at the output disc with those obtained by a theoretical.

1. What are the commonly used materials for sliding contact bearing?
Commonly used materials for sliding contact bearings are: Babbits (white metals), Bronze,
Aluminium alloys, Copper-lead alloy, Cast iron, Sintered metal or porous metal, on-metallic materials.
2. What are rolling contact bearings?
A rolling Contact bearing, also known as a rolling bearing, is a bearing which carries a load by
placing rolling elements (such as balls or rollers) between two bearing rings called races. The relative
motion of the races causes the rolling elements to roll with very little rolling resistance and with little
sliding.
3. Write two factors upon which the coefficient offriction between the beltand the pulley depends.
The factors are,
Materials of the belt and pulley
Slip of belt
Speed of belt
Smoothness of contact surfaces.
4. What are the advantages ofthe gear drives over other type ofdrives?

direction of rotation; this means that worm gear cannot drive the worm.
9. Give two application of the speed reducer.
The speed reducer are used in turbine generators, between motor and machine tools, in rolling
mills, between engine and road wheels in automobile and in many industrial processing like cement
factories, paper – plants, chemical industries etc.
10. What is a multi-speed gearbox?
A Multi speed Gearbox is a mechanical device that is used to provide Speed and Torque
conversions from a rotating power source to output shaft. As the speed of the shaft increases, the torque
transmitted decreases and vice versa. Multi-speed gearboxes are used in applications which require
frequent changes to the speed/torque at the output shaft.
