What is Drug Addiction?

characterized by compulsive substance seeking
and use of addictive substances, despite harmful
consequences.

A chemical substance, which
effects the physical, social,
psychological, spiritual and
economic well being of an
individual and brings changes
in his/her behavior.
Drug Addiction in Pakistan
• 6.7 million adults in Pakistan used drugs in the last 12
months.
• 4.25 million individuals are drug dependent.
• As a proportion of drug abusers, heroin users have
increased from 7.5 percent in 1983 to a shocking 51
percent a decade later in 1993.

Physical warning Sings
• Bloodshot eyes, pupils larger or smaller than usual
• Sleep , Appetite Problem
• Deterioration of physical appearance, personal
grooming habits
• Unusual smells on breath, body, or clothing
• Tremors, slurred speech, or impaired coordination

Behavioral signs
• Drop in attendance and performance at work or school
• Unexplained need for money or financial problems.
• Engaging in secretive or suspicious behaviors
• Sudden change in friends, favorite hangouts, and
hobbies
• Frequently getting into trouble (fights, accidents, illegal
activities)

Psychological warning signs
• Unexplained change in personality or attitude
• Sudden mood swings, irritability, or angry outbursts
• Periods of unusual hyperactivity, agitation, or
giddiness
• Lack of motivation; appears lethargic or “spaced out”
• Appears fearful, anxious, or paranoid, with no reason
