The ink left nothing untouched, staining and smudging the table, scratch paper,
and even my hand. A mess of paper and ink surrounded me, but only one area was
left organized. My sketchbook that I filled with meticulous work and effort for the
past 30 days stared back at me. Thirty days of work filled the sketchbook to the

InkTober is a social media phenomenon that took the artist world by storm. For
every day of October, you are to make one drawing that incorporates ink in its media.
The theme or subject of drawing is completely up to the artist, as long as the piece
has ink colored or black then it fits right into InkTober. Then, once you re satisfied...
Most of my pieces consisted of fanart or simple original pieces exploring inking
styles. I admittedly favored one series, Love Live!, over the others, but I was
grateful for the inspiration. Some drawings I practiced perspective and colors, like
the first and fourth day respectively, others I tested styles of shading and texture.
Going from a pencil sketch, to simple lining, and finally to detailed inking was a
fulfilling experience.
I would finish inking the drawing for the day and quickly sketch an outline for the
following day in pencil. This schedule was helpful and time efficient since the most
time consuming part of drawing is figuring out what to draw and how to start it.
However, I could only do this due to the leniency of my school schedule and sparse
amount of homework at that time. So when work started picking up at school two
weeks into October, it became a struggle to finish one day s drawing, not to mention
preparing for the following days.
The output and quality of my art in the middle of the month took a drop as I began
studying for tests, in class writings, and the PSAT. It was at this time that Inktober
became a real challenge. Not only do you have to plan and compose a drawing, but

The first day of my internship at the Refugee Legal Service in Dublin, Ireland I
learned the difference between watching news clips on refugees, and what it
meant to actually go through the whole process. The asylum process is a
painstaking, time consuming, and emotional ordeal. During my time there, I
ended up meeting with dozens of refugees, but there was one event that I can still
remember clearly. I was invited to help work on a case involving a woman and her
son fleeing from South Africa due to facial scarring on the first born child. After a
meeting with several members of our legal team, I reached out to the caseworker

The concept of silence and the right to public speech has always been aborted in
different ways depending on the culture. American and Chinese culture differ in their
interpretation of what is acceptable or not in terms of behaviours in their respective
societies. Regarding silence, American women are much more encouraged to state
their opinion than Chinese women. With that idea in mind, Maxine Hong Kingston
shares her aunt s story and hers in No Name Woman, a nonfiction piece recalling the
author s personal experiences and reflections on traditional Chinese family. Silence is
present in many ways and has different purposes all throughout the story. In No
Name Woman, silence is used as a way to control behaviour.
The mother s emphasis on keeping this story a secret demonstrates how the aunt is
being punished for her impregnation. The story starts with a warning not to tell
anyone, setting an atmosphere of shameful secret even before learning about the
aunt s story. Punishing someone is a form of control over the individual being
punished, usually a way of diminishing a certain behavior by adding a negative
stimulus. By committing a spite suicide, the aunt tries to punish her family by
ruining their drinking water. Her choice of manner and location for the suicide has
an important signification in Chinese culture: The Chinese are always very
frightened of the drowned ones, whose weeping ghost [...] waits silently by the
water to pull down a substitute (464). This passage shows how the family silence is
their way of protecting themselves from the aunt s ghost by continuing to punish
her, not only for her impregnation but also for her suicide. Her revenge was well
chosen as her final attempt at preserving some sense of control over her faith. Given
that the aunt didn t get to have a proper funeral and offends, her punishment
continues after her death and remains as long as her existence falls into oblivion. As
the daughter later understands, the aunt remains forever hungry, since the family s

and when a man asks him what he was doing there he just ran off. Towards the end

Have you ever wondered who discovered that the sun is the center of our universe?
If so, the answer is Nicolai Copernicus. This man was a well respected as well as well
educated man. He explored many different subjects including mathematics, medicine,
canon law, and his favorite astronomy. The Earth centered universeof Aristotle and
Ptolemy were Western thinking for almost 2000 years until the 16th century when
Copernicus proposed his theory.
Copernicus was born on February 19, 1473 in Thorn, Poland. He was the youngest
son of four children and the son of a prosperous merchant. Following his father s

This called for Epicycles, an orbit upon another orbit. This meant the planets made a
second revolution in an orbit tangent to the original orbit around the Earth, which
made the system very cluttered and difficult to understand.3 Copernicus did not do
away with the Epicycles, but by moving the sun to the center there were much less
Epicycles which intern made everything easier to understand. He called this system
the Heliocentric System. The sun was the center and the earth was just another planet
that revolved around the sun. The stars where distant objects that do not revolve,
because the earth rotates once in 24 hours the stars appear to revolve around the Earth
in the opposite direction.
Both scholars and the church accepted the Ptolemaic system. Copernicus hesitated to
announce his heliocentric view for fear of a trail for heresy.4 The Ptolemaic system
could easily be believed if one assumed the Christian belief that the Earth was the
center of the universe God created. People were afraid to believe a theory that went
against the Bible s teachings. His friends who were interested in his theories
persuaded him to write at least an abstract for them. He entitled it the Commentariolus
(Commentary). This commentary stated his theory in the form of seven axioms,
reserving the mathematical part for the principle work. From this, the doctrine of the
heliocentric system began to spread.
