After completing the initial year, I4MS has hosted its first public international event on 18th June in Berlin, in cooperation with the launch of the German manufacturing programme, Autonomik für Industrie 4.0". I4MS has brought together more than 150 professionals from industry and innovation, who have attended to several presentations about what has been achieved by I4MS and further funding opportunities for SMEs and middle size corporates (mid-caps) under the Initiative.
The event signified the importance of SMEs in Europes manufacturing industry and their role in the reindustrialisation process for Europe. At a glance: SMEs are providers of around 45% of manufacturing added value and roughly 59% of employment in the manufacturing sector.

Every technology goes through a number of transformations during its lifetime. And this is true for the humble lamppost. In Europe there are some 60-90 million of them lining the streets of our cities. And more than 75% of them are 25 years or older. Now is their time: doing more with this modest city asset to ‘bootstrap’ smart city services presents a real and rapid opportunity. What then needs to be done?

John Roberts, Laing O'Rourke
For decades Construction has doggedly resisted many of the changes that 'Manufacturing' has successfully adopted. Lack of an integrated supply chain, poor levels of investment in staff and construction's dirty-boots image are all parts of the problem. Can the adoption of modularisation alone change all this, or is more needed? Laing O'Rourke are well on the journey from constructor to manufacturer and assembler. John Roberts will describe some of the people, cultural and organisational issues that lie between us and maximising modularisation's impact.
Digital Security by Design: Information on current EPSRC & ESRC Calls - Maria...KTN
Following the Collaborators' Workshop held on 26th Sept (presentations available on KTN's SlideShare account), EPSRC/ESRC are running a Collaboration Development workshop on 22nd November 2019 in London to facilitate academia-industry and academia-academia collaboration ahead of the closing dates for the EPSRC and ESRC ISCF Digital Security by Design calls.
The calls need to be led by academic institutions. Industrial involvement, while not mandatory, is highly desirable and will be required for future competitions. Hence this workshop aims to have a mix of academic and industrial participants.
The Digital Security by Design challenge was announced in July. This challenge, amounting to £70 million of government funding over 5 years, will be delivered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
The Art of the Pitch: WordPress Relationships and SalesLaura Byrne

All these questions and more will be explored as we talk about matching clients’ needs with what your agency offers without pulling teeth or pulling your hair out. Practical tips, and strategies for successful relationship building that leads to closing the deal.
Threats to mobile devices are more prevalent and increasing in scope and complexity. Users of mobile devices desire to take full advantage of the features
available on those devices, but many of the features provide convenience and capability but sacrifice security. This best practices guide outlines steps the users can take to better protect personal devices and information.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
