After completing the initial year, I4MS has hosted its first public international event on 18th June in Berlin, in cooperation with the launch of the German manufacturing programme, Autonomik für Industrie 4.0". I4MS has brought together more than 150 professionals from industry and innovation, who have attended to several presentations about what has been achieved by I4MS and further funding opportunities for SMEs and middle size corporates (mid-caps) under the Initiative.
The event signified the importance of SMEs in Europes manufacturing industry and their role in the reindustrialisation process for Europe. At a glance: SMEs are providers of around 45% of manufacturing added value and roughly 59% of employment in the manufacturing sector.
Nina Klein from Frankfurt Book Fair presented New European Media (NEM) activities. NEM is a leading initiative in the Convergence and Social Media domain. Main activities and aims of the NEM were presented to the audience.

I4MS 2015: Enhancing digital transformation in manufacturing SMEs
I4MS 2015 will explore the progress achieved by the I4MS initiative and the impact participation has had on SMEs.
To date I4MS has achieved over 80% industrial participation. An initial participation of 80 SMEs has now grown to 150 as momentum continues to build. Success is also evident with SME participation in projects leading to the adaption of new technologies and approaches. I4MS phase two will take this success further through additional projects supported by a budget of approximately EUR 35 Mn.
At I4MS 2015 participating SMEs will present their experiences, results achieved and impact made. They will explain how they have benefited and what the adaption of innovative ICT has meant for their business. European support does not just exist at EU level.
Action at regional level supported through programmes such as Smart Specialisation present the good opportunity to reach out to and involve the diverse landscape of European SMEs. At I4MS 2015 participants will be introduced to a new activity designed for such outreach – digital innovation competence centres – and an outlook towards the next stage of I4MS.
I4MS is a EUR 77 Mn initiative of the 'Factories of the Future' partnership designed to support the adaption of innovative ICT by SMEs. Through seven integrated projects in four key areas, I4MS brings manufacturing SMEs directly into research and innovation projects, introducing them to innovative technologies and supporting the adoption of such technologies.

LASHARE is the acronym of a European project involving more than 30 SMEs from across Europe, partners from industry and six of the most renowned laser research institutes. Main objective is to share knowledge on laser based equipment and its use addressing the whole value chain end to end. As a key success factor for European manufacturing the transfer of innovative solutions from the laboratory into industrially robust products and the dissemination of its use stands at the heart of the project.

OSAmI-Commons – an OSGi based platform supporting Open Ambient Intelligence f...mfrancis
he research project OSAmI Commons, running under ITEA and supported by national ministries, is based on OSGi and has focussed on the establishment of an open modular platform that enables industry players to use and exchange modular applications as needed.
In order to enable this marketplace the project has deployed the commonly defined platform in the industries of Ambient Assisted Living (a virtual rehabilitation program that will be further developed by a hospital), Sustainability (The green building INEED 3 is a reference architecture for low consumption buildings), Smart Home (Business solutions for sensor networks), Telematics (Smart City Services that are exploited with Turkish Telecom), Edutainment (Content recommendations that are commercialised by a Cable company), and the creation and deployment of tools (e.g. the Eclipse Libra Tool for the enterprise) to support the common platform. The presentation will focus on the benefits that OSGi provided, and examples on how this platform can be further exploited.

It‘s Math That Drives Things – Simulink as Simulation and Modeling EnvironmentJoachim Schlosser
You can benefit from Simulink, the software that Engineers love for doing their work
Engineers in industries like Aerospace, Automotive, Energy production, Industrial Machinery, Automation, Railway and many others use Model-Based Design with Simulink for an increasing amount of their applications. Simulink allows you to…
gain knowledge about the dynamics of your system and have a direct path to implementation
use the modeling language that most engineers speak.
Math underpins all Systems. Simulink is Math made real.
Whatever domain your system incorporates: It is likely that mathematics plays a part of it. For example, Simulink covers domains like:
Continuous time, Discrete time, Discrete event
State machine, Physical models, Text based algorithms
System environment, Digital hardware, Analog/RF hardware
Embedded software, Mechanical systems
MATLAB & Simulink provide a unified environment for all.
Functional testing those systems uses simulation and formal methods.
Begin to use Simulink for engineering mechatronic systems now.
Find ways to look at the system you could not do before, and save time in your development
Simulink is industry standard for engineering controls, signal processing.

The presentation discusses innovations and progressions in nuclear simulation, from introduction of the technology in the 1970s to current real-time, high-fidelity models.
Automatized testing hil system for agile product-design environmentTritem
The stricter safety requirements in the rail industry – implied by the EN 50128 standard – contribute to an increasing demand for testing rail vehicles and their subsystems, especially vehicle main controllers. Hardware-in-the-Loop method, which is commonly used in automotive and aerospace domains, has proved to be functionally useful. However, such systems would usually exceed the budget of a development project in the railway industry, due to short series manufacturing and multiple vehicle variants. To deal with this problem Tritem Microsystems has designed Virtual-HIL which decreases the overall cost and increases portability of this kind of a system. In this paper, we present both the classic approach and our groundbreaking system, along with a use case from one of our recent projects together with an automated testing framework built on the top of ourVirtual HIL.
The AUTOWARE project is funded by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020. The project aims to push forward an open CPPS ecosystem, allowing SMEs to develop digital automation cognitive solutions.
AUTOWARE will connect several initiatives for strengthening the European SME offer on cognitive autonomous products. It will help manufacturing companies to innovate their business model by implementing novel technologies and digitising their processes.
