National Disaster Management Authority,
abbreviated as NDMA is an agency of the Ministry
of Home Affairs whose primary purpose is to
coordinate response to natural or man-made
disasters and for capacity-building in disaster
resiliency and crisis response. NDMA was
established through the Disaster Management
Act enacted by the Government of India in
December 2005.

 The activities of the Control Room include collection
and 7 transmission of information concerning natural
calamity and relief, keeping close contact with
governments of the affected States, interaction with
other Central Ministries/Departments/Organizations in
connection with relief, maintaining records containing
all relevant information relating to action points and
contact points in Central Ministries etc., keeping up-to-
date details of all concerned officers at the Central and
State levels.

The National Institute of Disaster Management
(NIDM) was constituted under an Act of Parliament
with a vision to play the role of a premier institute
for capacity development in India and the region.
The efforts in this direction that began with the
formation of the National Centre for Disaster
Management (NCDM) in 1995 gained impetus with
its redesignation as the National Institute of
Disaster Management (NIDM) for training and
capacity development. Under the Disaster
Management Act 2005, NIDM has been assigned
nodal responsibilities for human resource
development, capacity building, training, research,
documentation and policy advocacy in the field of
disaster management.
