Dimensional Analysis and its
Applications
Dimensional Analysis
 Dimensional Analysis is a method in which we
equate dimensions on both sides of equations
 It is called factor-label method and unitary
method where we use conversion factors to
convert units
 The main principle is dimensions can be added or
subtracted only if dimensions of both physical
quantities are same
Application of Dimensional
Analysis
 Conversion of units from one system to another
 Checking consistency of a physical equation
 Deriving relation between physical quantities
Conversion of Units
 We use the formula N1U1 = N2U2 where N and U
are numerical and unit part respectively
 It is a very convenient method to convert units
from metric system to C.G.S system
Checking consistency of a
equation
 A equation is said to be consistent, if all its
dimensions are equal
 It is a preliminary test and doesn’t signify
complete correctness of equation
Deriving relations between physical
quantities
 In problems where physical quantities depend on
each other, we use method of dimensional
analysis to define relation between them
 We can’t get exact equation as we can’t find
value of constants from dimensional equation
