DIGITAL LIBRARY RESOURCES
 Collection in which complete contents
documents are created or converted in
machine-readable form for online
access
 Scientific data sets
 Scanned images, images of
photographic or printed text etc
 Computer storage devices’ such as
optical disk , CD- ROMs/ DVD-ROMs
 Databases accessible through
internet and other networks
 Online databases and CD-Rom
information products particularly those
with multimedia and interactive video
components
 Digital audio video clips or full length
Movie
TYPES OF DIGITAL LIBRARY RESOURCES
 On line e-resources
 E – journals (Full text and Bibliographical)
 E- Book

TRADITIONAL LIBRARY VS DIGITAL LIBRARY

TRADITIONAL LIBRARY DIGITAL LIBRARY
Print collection
Stable with slow evaluation
Individual objects not directly linked
with each other
Flat structure with minimal contextual
meta data
Scholarly content with validation
process
Limited access points and centralize
management
The physical and logical organization
correlated
One way interaction
Ex- school and college library
All resources in digital form
Dynamic and ephemeral
Multimedia and fractal objects
Scaffolding of data structures and
richer and contextual meta data
More than scholarly content with
various validation process
Unlimited access point, distributed
collections and access control
The physical and logical
organizations may be virtually
Dynamic real time dialogue
For ex –NDL – National Digital
Library of India
PROBLEMS & CHALLENGES
a) Lack of clear cut policy at National level with main focus on sustainability
b) Outdated software and hardware and difficulty in upgrading the same.
c) Non-availability of cost effective new technological advancement.
d) Lack of multiple Indian language OCR facilities.
e) Non-standard technical activities, data description and transmission
characteristics.
f) Non-availability of well-trained skilled personnel.
g) Lack of management support
h) Lack of proper preservation policy
i) No Intellectual Property Rights policy for content development of digital
information.
j) Rigidity in the publishers’ policies and data formats

PROS
 No physical boundary
 Round the clock availability (24×7)
 Eco-friendly
 Helpful for CWSN( E- Kaksha)
 Multiple access
 Information retrieval
 Preservation and Conservation:
 Space
 Added value
 Easily accessible
 Cost
 Wide Variety of Content Available
 Easily Updated
 Simplified Search
 Library Management Automation
 Preserving Knowledge For Future Generations
CONS
 Copy right
 Speed of access
 Initial cost is high
 Preservation
 Digital Environment
 Efficiency
 Adverse effect on physical health
 Requires special training to access

CONCLUSION
Digital libraries are not going to replace the physical
existence of document completely but no doubt to
meet the present demand , to satisfy the non local
user digitization must be introduced so that at least
libraries become hybrid nature. The initial cost of
digitization is high but experiment shows that once
digitization is introduced then the cost to manage
this collection will be cheaper than that of any
traditional library.
