Do you agree with the view that the British Public’s...
Do you agree with the view that the British Public s enthusiasm for the Empire increased during the
Second Boer War (1899 1902)? Explain your answer using sources 4, 5, and 6 and your own
knowledge. The Second Boer War was a landmark in British imperial history because of its impact on
British politics, society and military tactics. The Second Boer War led to drastic reforms amongst the
military and amongst the people as the Conservative party was removed from power by the Liberal
party in the post war election of 1906. However, enthusiasm for the war at the time was quite high;
patriotism amongst the British was a cause of much of the support the government at the time received
during the war. But did it increase or decrease, and why? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This lack of support became apparent in the 1906 general election in which the Conservative
government (Whom had been in control of the Empire during the Boer War.) was ousted in a landslide
defeat by the Liberal party. This was mainly because of the war and the effects it had on Britain. The
public had been outraged at British tactics during the Second Boer War. Especially that of
concentration camps, scorched earth tactics, the poisoning of wells and the burning of Boer
homesteads. Therefore, the transition from a conventional to a guerrilla war caused a loss in
enthusiasm amongst the British people for the Second Boer war. In conclusion, I somewhat agree that
enthusiasm for the Empire increased during the Second Boer War, however, I only believe that
enthusiasm increased as the early stages of the war progressed, but as soon as it transitioned from a
conventional war to a guerrilla war, enthusiasm decreased as casualties and costs increased along with
the brutal tactics used by the British in their attempts to combat the Boers strategy. The loss of
enthusiasm can be attributed to other things, for example, the discovery that 40% of Britons were unfit
for military service revealed how poor public health in Britain was at the time and how the laissez
faire attitude of the Conservative government contributed to it. But overall I believe that the loss of
enthusiasm can mainly be attributed to the actual war

Standardization For A Format War
1.Describe standardization, format wars, and how standardization can lead to a format war.
Standardization: Set of predefined specifications, rules or features that manufactures or producers
need to follow when they make/produce the products/goods or components of it. Example
MacDonalds set standardization for each of its menu items like size, weight, food value etc. So, each
food item need to prepare according to predefined standard.
Format wars: It is a kind of battle or war among the companies to set and control the standard in a
market. In other words a company set standard for its products, similerly another company of same
industry also set standard, now they compete in the market for customers and long term better control
the market. Example Microsoft and Intel had won format war against Apple computer s proprietary
system and later against IBM OS/2 opereting system.
How standardization can lead to a format war:
Standardization can be an improtant source of competitive advantages. Most of the cases one standard
become the winning standard, so many wars in industries occure around the companies for get the
winning standard. Thus standardization lead to format war.
2.Once standardization occurs, how does the industry benefit?
Standardization offers several benefits
Firstly standardization ensure compatibility between products and their complements (other products
used with them). Example PCs with software. The economic benefits here is reducing the products

Leadership Concepts Of The Film Nemo
In this paper I will identify and explain the leadership concepts that I learned in this class using
characters from the film Finding Nemo. To do so I will provide examples of transformative leadership
and describe the impact it had on others. I will also explain how the characters acquired their
leadership effectiveness by identifying experiences that were instrumental in their leadership
development.
Transformative Leaders The three characters in the film Finding Nemo that displayed transformative
leadership are Marlin, Dory and Gill. Marlin0020goes on a journey to find his lost son Nemo. While
on his journey Marlin experiences many challenges and meets new friends. Marlin learns that he no
longer needs to be afraid, and that he can be a leader. Along the way Marlin meets Dory, who joins
him on his journey. She is a very positive fish who suffers from short term memory loss. Dory always
maintains a positive attitude, calms Marlin as he becomes upset and helps Marlin become more
positive as well (Bennis, 2009). Throughout the movie Dory shows Marlin that he can trust her. Dory
easily adjusts to new situations and thinks outside of the box which contributes to Marlin being
reunited with Nemo. As Dory and Marlin s journey nears the end Marlin begins to have a lot of
respect and trust for Dory. Gill is also a transformative leader. Nemo met Gill in the fish tank at the
dentist s office after he was captured. Nemo was very scared and unfamiliar with his new

Disability Simulation Paper On Disability
Disability Awareness Simulation Paper
Disability simulation is the process where an able bodied individual assumes a position of the person
with disability to try and understand what really happens in the life of a person with disability. It is
offers experience that allows one to learn more about people living with disability and hopefully treat
them better; have a change of perception. It gives first hand experience on how life of person with
disability really is. A day alternating as a person on the wheelchair and as assistant had so much to
offer as will be illustrated below.
First was to use public transportation. My partner and I chose to ride the bus to catch a glimpse of
what using a wheelchair in the bus would mean. I was the assistant in this case. At first I thought it
would be an easy time working as an assistant. I expected to be given priority and special treatment as
I had a person on the wheelchair with me; but no. Boarding the bus was a bit difficult since the bus did
not have enough space to accommodate the wheelchair. We needed help to get in as the floor of the
bus was higher than the ground we stood on. In the bus, the wheelchair had to be folded while in the
bus since the space to put it was limited.
This was an eye opener for us to advocate for public transportation especially the bus to be modified
to accommodate persons with physical disability using a wheelchair. A lift or a ramp could be
provided for easy boarding of the bus. Additional space

The Victimization of Teenage Girls
What does it mean to be a girl according to society? How does society see it? In many countries, a girl
is seen as powerless, uneducated, and too emotional to handle a man s job. For example, women in
Saudi Arabia are not allowed to drive. In the past, writers used to describe a woman s role as the
victim of many forms of discrimination in the United States of America. In other words, women were
only involved in things that men thought were not important. For instance, women did not have any
other role than being a housewife. They had to stay at home, watch the children, be responsible, and
do all the chores. Nonetheless, American women got their freedom earlier comparing to other
countries in the world. Now they are more independent, more ... Show more content on

Kerry Cohen, as a practicing psychotherapist and writing teacher, provides in her book different
resources and website where teen girls can get more information about these symptoms.
Another second reason why teen girls are victimized is the culture of this society. Teen girls are told to
be princesses when they are small. However when they are grown up they are told by their parents that
they are too young to use inappropriate cloth. When they go out and meet other teens who wear sexy
cloths, they are getting mixed feeling about it. Another example is when they watch TV they see girls
in sexy cloths and they automatically think that it is right. The TV uses girls in bikinis to attract the
audience. Even more, when teen girls go to school, they want to fit in their group of friends by
wearing the same cloths because that is what they make them seem cool. Therefore, how they are seen
by others is more important than anything. Image comes first. They must do anything to fit in the
Cinderella s shoe. Likewise, on the short story, Where Are You Going, Where have You Been written
by Joyce Carol Oates, Connie wants attention at all costs. She enjoys when men are looking at her.
Connie s mother never agrees with her that she is beautiful. Instead, Connie s mother criticizes her and
compares her with June, her older sister. Then, Connie develops a low self esteem because her family
is not accepting her sexual admiration. For example, there is a part on

Value Of College Education
When one thinks of going to college, what usually comes to mind is the amount of time and money
achieving a higher education requires. Many people often question whether or not seeking an
education after high school is worth all the effort. Although going to college may sometimes seem
difficult and unnecessary, it has been proven to be an important, beneficial chapter of young adults
lives. The value of a college education is extremely profitable to one s life and career due to the job
opportunities it offers, the skills it allows you to learn, and the benefits it can result in later on in life.
In this day and age, an increasing amount of employers are requiring a higher level of education in
order to hire people. Having a degree allows adults to have multiple choices of when, where, and how
they work. Because of this, college graduates have new and improved employment opportunities. In a
recent study of young americans, 58% of college graduates and people with some college or associate
s degree expressed being very satisfied with their jobs, compared to only 50% of high school
graduates and a drastic 40% of people without a high school diploma. For many people, working at a
job you are fond of is crucial for living a quality life. Having a degree aids in increasing the amount of
choices when selecting a career path you will enjoy. Because of this, college graduates have lower
poverty rates than ever before. The 2008 poverty rate for bachelor s degree holders was 4%,

A gust of warm wind embraces my skin as mama and I sit on a bench under the old tulip tree and talk
of the upcoming spring picnic. The water before of me twinkles as a thousand stars and my younger
twin brothers run wild around our cottage. In this moment life feels perfect. Although in a blink of an
eye life changed from perfect to a nightmare as mama grasped my hand and fell to the ground below.
When papa appears in front of me, I realize I have been screaming. In one single motion, he lifts
mama up and carries her off to the carriage to take her to doctor Stanton. In that instant my perfect
moment ends. Scarlet fever leads to death in almost every case, or at least that s what doctor Stanton

Persuasive Essay Against Gun Control
Currently gun control has been amidst one of the most thought of debates not only in recent times, but
also in prior occasions. The mass shootings occurring more often lately have fueled the altercation
pertaining to one subject, gun control. Gun control may have many different meanings, or descriptions
varying from person to person. One may think that gun control is banning guns all together, banning a
certain category of weapons, or banning certain items like high capacity magazines, and flash
suppressors. All of these would be forms of gun control, but the true meaning of gun control, as stated
by an online article What Gun Control Could Look Like, Gun control would allow citizens in the
United States to still purchase firearms, but there would be reasonable regulations on firearms
(Greenblat). This statement introduces the idea that gun control would not be banning guns, but
banning items that are unnecessary for civilians to have possession of. Banning all guns cannot
happen because it would be infringing upon the second amendment, the right to bear arms. The second
amendment cannot be changed or challenged, but perimeters may be set to keep guns and people s
capabilities with them limited. A firearm in the hands of a criminal or someone with bad intentions is
not good, but it can be prevented. Gun control needs to happen, or mass shootings and high rates of
violence will continue to occur in society. Guns have contributed to a very large amount of deaths in
the United States. Suicides, homicides, and mass killings all occur, and guns are the most used weapon
in all of these cases. Guns are responsible for one point three percent of all deaths in the United States
between the years 1999, and 2013. This made guns the twelfth leading cause of all deaths between
these years (procon.org). In the United States roughly 30,000 suicides are committed every year
(harvard.edu). Most of these could be prevented but the easy access to dangerous weapons such as
guns plays a large role in whether or not the person attempting suicide succeeds in taking their life or
not. Every day there are as many as ninety three people that die from guns. Fifty eight of the deaths, or
two thirds, are people who commit suicide with

The other features include depth of field preview, Instagram mode and depth of field preview.
Custom picture control
The camera usually applies critical adjustments such as sharpness, contrast and color saturation to
Raw images to make them finer. Indeed if you prefer taking photos in RAW mode, you need not worry
about the settings because it will be amended automatically. If you want to set picture style or custom
picture control, you simply need to go to the menu and change to find custom picture control settings.
Exposure compensation
Exposure compensation is mostly located around the shutter. The unit allows you to increase or
decrease default meter reading on your camera to account for the brifghtness in the area you are

The Oliver Versus Brock Case
A civil suit is commonly derived from a private party or individual, who alleges damages from duty of
care. Once a civil case begins, it is the duty of the plaintiff to prove, with evidence, duty of care,
breach of duty, causation, and damages. Conversely, the defendant must prove their affirmative
defense against documented allegations. The Oliver versus Brock case proves the importance of
supporting evidence as opposed to hearsay statements, to prove the truth of the matter. In the Oliver
versus Brock case, Cathy (Plaintiff) filed a lawsuit against Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital of
Demopolis and the treating physicians Dr. F.S. Whitfield, Dr. Paul Ketcham and Dr. E.C. Brock

Based on the information provided, Oliver s allegations were not supported with documentation, but
merely opinion and hearsay. In Oliver s affidavit, she stated that she read in the discharge summary
that Dr. Brock was consulted and assisted with treatment. Although the supporting documentation of
the previous statement is important, the more pressing issue becomes whether a doctor patient
relationship was formed in order to support the allegations.
Contrary to the alleged, Dr. Brock refuted the claim, defending that he never established a doctor
patient relationship with Anita, which relieves him of liability. In order to validate his refute, Dr.
Brock provided four factual elements that were supported by his counterparts; Dr. Whitfield and Dr.

Weather to globalise, and how to globalize, have become two of the most burning strategy issues for
managers around the world. Many forces are driving companies around the world to globalize by
expanding their participation in foreign markets. Almost every product market in the major world
economies computers, fast food, nuts and bolts has foreign competitors. Trade barriers are also falling;
the recent United States/Canada trade agreement and the impending 1992 harmonization in the
European Community are the two most dramatic examples. Japan is gradually opening up its long
barricaded markets. Maturity in domestic markets is also driving companies to seek international
expansion. This is particularly true of U.S. companies that, nourished by the huge domestic market,
have typically lagged behind their European and Japanese rivals in internationalization.

General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell
General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell Synopsis and Objective: October 19, 2000
Honeywell s stock was up $10 due to recent merger discussions between Honeywell and United
Technologies Corporation (UTC). For every share of honeywell, UTC would pay 0.74 of its own
stock. In other words, the merge would lead to a dominant supplier company in the aerospace market,
and a strong competitor for GE. This led John F. Jack Welch Jr., GE s chair and CEO, to call Michael
Bonsignore, chair and CEO of Honeywell, to present a bid maintaining a 1:1 share for share exchange
ratio. GE won the bid against UTC and agreed to a price of 1.055 GE shares for every share of
Honeywell s, plus assumed debt. The regulatory filings were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

How would General Electric and Honeywell s stock prices be affected by the investigation? Anytime a
company is investigated by a regulatory commision it is generally a bad thing. The EC s investigation
of the stock prices would likely have an adverse affect on the stock price and stockholder confidence
of the two companies. General Electric investors know that Jack Welch is only on board with the
company until the acquisition with Honeywell is over. This means that General Electric will be soon
losing its cash cow of a ceo and if the deal doesn t go through then Welch will be going out on a bad
note. This skepticism of whether or not the regulatory commision will accept the merger would only
add to the question of General Electric moving forward positively in the future. Additionally,
Honeywell may choose to go with UTC if the merger with General Electric falls through. If
Honeywell does in fact go with UTC then the market position of General Electric will be
compromised and their stock will once again fall. For the Honeywell company the merger question
being questioned by a regulatory commision would likely lower their stock value as well. Investors in
Honeywell may fear that the deal will fall through and Honeywell will have wasted its resources.

How Did Truett Build A Fried Chicken Sandwich
I. As a young boy, Truett Cathy watched his mother cook fried chicken for boarders they took in after
his father died. a. Even then Truett was already thinking as an entrepreneur to help his family make
money. i. He would go in to Atlanta and purchase six packs of Coca Cola, bring them back to his
home town of Hapeville and sell them for five cents a piece. This would in turn make him a profit of
five cents on every six bottles he sold. II. In 1946, a then 25 year old Truett Cathy and his younger
brother Ben opened a restaurant called the Dwarf House , in their home town of Hapeville, Georgia.
III. Truett started experimenting with different ways to cook and serve chicken quickly and
economically. He started serving a fried chicken breast fillet on a bun to keep customers from getting
grease on their fingers. He then went on to perfect the chicken sandwich by experimenting with
different cooking methods, seasonings and spices. When he finally felt it was right he had ended up
using a special blend of seasonings and cooking the chicken in a pressure cooker with peanut oil, then
adding a pickle to the finished sandwich. This would eventually become the Chick fil A Chicken
Sandwich and become a lasting part of the Chick fil A formula. Transition I. ... Show more content on

Rhetorical Analysis Of Speech By Ronald Reagan
Two hundred and nine thousand. That is the number of lives that were nobly given to save the many
during the invasion of Normandy (D day and the Battle of Normandy). The courageous men and
women fought continuously for days on end, climbing the jagged cliffs of Normandy, France. Under
rifle fire from gun nests from above, the allied troops were able to take control of the coastline, but not
without great sacrifice. The speech given by Ronald Reagan was made to commemorate those who
fearlessly fought for our country and the many thousands that gave their lives during those hard days
of war. His speech had a clear message, to honor and remember those who gave and risked their lives
during the invasion of Normandy.

rhetorical questions asking why they served and fought till their last breath. You were young the day
you took these cliffs; some of you were hardly more than boys, with the deepest joys of life before
you. Yet, you risked everything here. Why? Why did you do it? What impelled you to put aside the
instinct for self preservation and risk your lives to take these cliffs? What inspired all the men of the
armies that met here? We look at you, and somehow we know the answer. It was faith and belief; it
was loyalty and love. (Reagan). He answers his questions with love and loyalty for their families and
their country. Reagan uses this in his speech to make the audience think deeply about why the men did

Love in The Beauty and the Beast and Shrek Essay
Love in The Beauty and the Beast and Shrek
Love is a common theme not only in the entertainment industry, but as well as in life. Love sells, and
people in the movie industries understand this and gain from the profit. Movies often portray love
between two people who are both beautiful, and not always the best person they can be on the inside.
In Disney s The Beauty and the Beast and Dreamworks Shrek not only do they have two people fall in
love, but also they show how love is blind.

When Bell, a real bookworm, learned of her father s capture, she set out to rescue him, and made a
deal with the beast to take his place and to never leave the castle. Maurice, Bell s father, ran back to
town to get more people to help rescue his daughter, but at first no one believed him. While Bell s stay
at the castle, she was given the freedom to roam all she wanted, but to stay out of one room, which
held the rose that contained the spell, that until the Beast could get someone to truly love him, he
would stay like this forever, he had until the last petal fell for this to happen. Back in town, at a local
pub, Gaston, who not only was in love with Bell but himself as well, headed up a party to kill the
beast and rescue Bell. As they came to slay the beast Bell realized that she loved the beast. And as the
last petal fell from the rose, she showed him that she loved him and the spell was broken.
Love is in the eye of the beholder. In both Shrek and Beauty and the Beast the two least likely people
fall in love, while they are under a spell. The other characters do not understand the love, nor do the
two in love care what they think, all they see is each other. Both movies show that it does not matter
what you look like when you fall in love, all that matters is you fall for the person for who they are.
An evil spell was cast in both movies, which plays into the fact that they fell for

Abstract
In my biology class we conducted an experiment to determine if there was a direct correlation
between the concentration of lead levels in soil and the effect it has on plant synthesis and plant
height. The specimen used in the experiment is a species of plant, Brassica rapa. Seeds of B. rapa were
careful planted within every cell of a cubical that was filled with six different concentrations of lead
which was our treatment group and the control was the cubical with no lead soil in it. Plant height and
temperature were recorded with a thermostat and a mm ruler. The results show that lead concentration
does not have a relationship with plant height except in concentration of 100 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg.
During this three week experiment, the mean of over a hundred students plant heights were recorded
and all the student s plants showed similar results meaning lead nitrate concentrations in soil does not
affect the growth.
Keywords: Brassica Rapa; Lead nitrate Concentration

Picky Eater By Julia Alvarez
At some point of a kid s life, they want to be picky about something. They want to have some control
of their little world where adults are constantly telling them what to wear, what to do, and what to eat.
Food, for instance, is an easy topic where kids will fight for some independence. Throwing, yelling,
crying and even bribing were the essence of a battle at dinner tables. Because some parents would
automatically give in to their children s need, the kids often think they won the battle but technically
they didn t. In the story, Picky Eater , Julia Alvarez tells a story of her childhood experience of home
meals where her and her sisters were also picky eaters, despite having healthy food served to them.
Meals, she said, at home were battlegrounds. Even if you won the dinner battle, refusing to clean your
plate or drink your engrudo, you inevitably lost the war (Alvarez 145). Battlegrounds at home can
occur but it doesn t have to end up being messy if the parents know how to handle the situation
properly. In Picky Eater Alvarez mentioned that her parents particularly her mother was very strict on
the type of food the children ate. Getting food from en la calle was strictly forbidden (Alvarez 144)
because they might get sick catching some kind of disease from people who have prepared their food.
Also, because Alvarez and her sisters were very thin, having leftovers on their plate wasn t allowed.
To ensure her kids got all the nutrition they needed, the mother had

Henry Ford Industry Research Paper
Henry Ford and the Expansion of the Ford Industry Ford, the name almost every person in America
associates with the successful car industry. However, not everyone understands how Henry Ford made
the world wide business as we see it today. Nearly a century ago Henry Ford and his son Edsel
procured blazing success for the Ford car industry from 1920 to 1924, to end up re nurturing the
flickering flame from 1925 to 1929, while also benefiting and promoting other industries of the time.
When the Ford company entered the 1920 s, they were struggling to get past financial difficulties. To
buy out minority stockholders and to begin work on a new factory on the Rouge, Ford had to take out
a sixty million dollar loan. The deadline for repaying this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They even made sure to secure several miles of railroads to transport their materials back and forth
(Geldermen). Edsel invested his time and money in ventures that he thought would benefit others,
including the Roscoe B. Jackson Cancer research Center in Bar Harbor, Maine (Bak 128). According
to The Age of Automobiles , the demand of cars created a demand for more and longer roads. This
resulted in the first large scale concepts of highways. Along with highways came the conveniences
needed to accompany longer trips. These being gas stations, motels, and the first fast food shops. The
huge amount of cars that Ford and their competitors were putting out had to have these
accommodations or else sales wouldn t nearly be as high as they were. Geldermen also explained the
rise of the timber production, the surge of sawmills, the increase of freighters to carry the materials,
and the demand for glass work were due to the cars being produced. The Age of Automobiles also
suggests that vacationing and traveling increased productivity in places most visited. Understanding
how the Ford automotive company rose and fell can help see how the businesses were always
changing in the 1920 s and how a strong business can last for a very long time once a dedicated person
establishes it. Overall the Ford company almost always increased in size. The cars produced by this
company are still iconic in today s world and show a past of determination. Why walk when you can

Bills Becoming Laws Essay
Today, I am going to talk about the process of bills becoming laws in the state of Texas. Citizens or
officials must or present a bill to the House or Senate Clerk. Once this process occurs, the bills are
categorized in an alphanumeric arrangement for officials and residents to track during the cycle of the
proposed bill. The bills are proposed the Monday after general elections. Influence from within or
outside of Legislature have a massive bearing on bill becoming laws. There are several advantageous
and underhanded tactics used to have a bill circulated or tossed out. The Lieutenant Governor and
Speaker of the House allocate bills to standing committees which initiates a shady tactic called
Pigeonholing. This scheme delays committees from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another delaying approach called Chubbing, is the process of officials controlling or exhausting time
to defer votes or proposal of other bills. When a vote is cast for a bill to pass or die, presiding officers
have a partial but substantial influence in this process. Requiring a 2/3 vote, the officers implement
two alternatives of voting, roll call or voice. Ghost voting is a practice that is common, illegal and
utilized by official. This is the act of voting without being present. Another deferral tactic used is
called quorum busting where officials fail to show up or walk out of a scheduled vote. After a rigorous
process of delaying and postponement, if a bill passes, it is then promoted to a conference committee.
Two variations of the proposed bill are discussed. The Speaker and the Lieutenant Governor select
five senators and five members of the house to operate on the committee. Once the two variations the
bills are finalized, it is returned to both chambers for a vote. The Governor receives the bill and is
given 10 business days to sign the bill. Several actions can be taken by the governor; sign the bill or
veto and return it to legislature for a potential

Characteristics Of The Middle Colonies
The Middle Colonies There are three Colonies that make up the Colonial Region. The regions include
of the Southern Colonies, Middle Colonies, and the New England Colonies. All of these colonies
supported different ideas. The Colonial Region that best provides the five core American values listed
above, are the Middle Colonies. They had religious freedom, and they also had political freedom, and
finally they had economic opportunities. First off, the Middle Colonies had religious freedom. This
means that the people of the Middle Colony were allowed to follow any religion without being
punished for it. The Middle Colonies consisted of Christians, Jews, and Protestants. Many of these
people escaped from their country to come to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In some places the king makes all of the decisions. Having more opinions is better than one because
the outcome will be more fair. The people also had equality. The people thought that no one should be
treated differently due to what they believe in. Having political freedom allowed for a lot more justice,
democracy, equality and freedom, which is good. Lastly, the people who live in the Middle Colonies
had a lot more of economic opportunities than the other colonies. This allows for people to be able to
do their own thing. They can choose start up any job or business. There are also a lot more resources
that can be used for the economic opportunities. A major job in the Middle Colonies had to do with
farming. The farmer would grow many different crops, grains, and oats. This allowed for great
business. The people would also take to goods and send them on a ship that way they could make
deals with England. Papermaking was also a major economic opportunity for the people of the Middle
Colonies. Based on the textbook, Home to growing numbers of merchants, traders, and craftspeople,
these cities teemed with people in the business of buying and selling goods (America Pathways to the
Present, 74). This shows that people were making a lot of money off of agriculture and commerce.
The reason for this is because the Middle Colonies are in a great location. There major city for this
was Philadelphia. The soil was also great for the crops. The people that lived in the

Federalism Is The Division Of Powers Between A Central...
Federalism is the division of powers between a central government and regional governments. The
United States have a federal system of government where the states and national government practice
the seperation of powers system within their own scopes of authority. The Fourth Amendment protects
the right of the people against unreasonable searches and seizures . The Fourth Amendment, spoke to
the importance of federalism as a mechanism to secure liberty for the American people. State courts
would be responsible for determining if the searches were conducted with reasonableness, giving the
government the closest to the people the most say in such matters. Regarding privacy rights there have
been positive and negative impacts throughout history. A conflict ensued between two groups
(Federalists and Anti Federalists) before the new constitution could be ratified. Negotiations between
two groups: Federalists, who preferred a strong central government and Anti Federalists, who
preferred state s rights, finally agreed to adopt the Bill of Rights. These amendments deal with
freedom of speech and religion, right to bear arms, right to jury trials, right to due process, right to
compensation if property is seized for a public purpose, right to privacy in so far as it bars an illegal
search of one s premises and possessions, and states rights. The Fourth Amendment protects the right

A Political Campaign Analysis
The political campaign environment in the United States changed in 2010 with the allowance of
unlimited independent expenditures by outside entities in elections. The courts decisions in Citizens
United and SpeechNow.org further increases Americans concerns regarding an undue influence of
money in politics. This, coupled with increasing polarization and congressional gridlock in the U.S.
House of Representatives, promotes skepticism of the political process. Polarization and gridlock
create perceptions that representatives do not represent the average voter preferences but represent big
moneyed interests (Briffault, 2011; Gilbert and Aiken, 2015) and donors, who are more ideologically
extreme than the average voter (Barber, 2014). Given ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the 1960s, the decline of moderate ideological voters has allowed more active, partisan voters to
determine election outcomes. This produces greater ideological conflict and stimulates a further
decrease in the level of voter turnout by ideological moderates (Rogowski, 2014; Ansolabehere, et. al,
1994). Outside money that supports or opposes a particular partisan candidate can increase the level of
electoral conflict and promote a greater rallying effect around ideological partisan leanings of
particular candidacies. This diminishes the representation for the average constituents, median voters,
and ideological moderates. Diminishing representation of average constituent interests in Congress
also has a detrimental effect on political efficacy and willingness to participate in electoral politics by

Comparing Dante s Inferno And The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
Both Dante Alighieri s Inferno and Haruki Murakami s The Wind up Bird Chronicle are able to reveal
aspects of human nature through physical and psychological journeys that the main character faces. In
the Inferno, Dante faces a new psychological journey in each circle of hell. In The Wind up Bird
Chronicle, Okada goes through multiple physical journeys which are all related to one of Mr. Honda s
readings. Limbo, the first circle of hell, is where Dante begins his first journey to reaching Paradise.
Midway in our life s journey, I went astray from the straight road and woke to find myself alone in a

Sayyid Qutb s Impact on Islam
2. Evaluate the impact on Islam of ONE significant person or school of thought.
Sayyid Qutb had a seemingly minimal impact throughout his life, but his teachings and ideology have
become of significant importance to the Islamic faith. However his views and thoughts of that are
somewhat extreme have lead some followers to form organizations which are involved with radical,
extreme and terrorist activities.
Qutb s teachings and commentary of Islamic teachings are seen to hold considerable authority and
significance to adherents of Islam. His main and most revered teachings included: the belief in Tawhid
(the oneness of God), the concept of Jahiliyya (pagan ignorance), jihad (struggle) and the need to
revive Islam.
Through his first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus it is evident, that Qutb s teachings in the ideal of jahiliyya were fundamental to the pathway that
Islam decided to follow, and did in fact promote the teachings of Islam and sustained growth.
Qutb was one of the most significant figures in the development of jihadi Salafi ideology. Qutb in true
Salafi style, reanalysed the Qur an to find new ideology. Qutb acknowledge that the contemporary
jama at (movement) would also encounter periods of weakness. Therefore he insisted that here was an
immediate need for a new movement. Qutb also constantly stated that there was a need for new
leadership. He claimed that the new leaders should engage in jihad (struggle) against jahiliyya, so that
a true Islamic state can be established. His teachings of jihad and the need to use force if the survival
of the Islam was under threat, is being used today out of his context of time by extreme terrorist
groups. Members of these radical groups say are not afraid to die for their cause because Qutb gave
them reason: For a pious life is a life of struggle or jihad for Islam, and struggle means martyrdom .
Qutb s actions, books and somewhat extreme teachings all greatly contributed to the revival of Islam.
He successfully contributed to the revival of the Islamic faith through his commentary and teachings
on the Qur an and the tradition. In this action, adherents were able to gain a greater understanding of

COFFEE COMMODITY CHAIN
Tine S. Olsen and Brett Inder♦
ABSTRACT:
To explain the value added along the coffee commodity chain we propose and estimate a theoretical
model of the coffee commodity chain. The theoretical model consists of four markets and five agents
in the coffee commodity chain and predicts that prices in the coffee commodity chain move together
but are also influenced by income, technology and production. A vector error correction model is used
to test the theoretical predictions. In addition to the theoretical conclusions the empirical model
confirms the beneficial role of the International
Coffee Agreement and the importance of the level of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Darity and Davis (2005) argue that in the study of uneven development the North South trade and
growth literature provides insights which have been neglected by the later literature of new growth
theory and new trade theory. This has encouraged us to apply North South models to the coffee value
chain. The theoretical model derived in section 2 builds on Bloch and Sapsford (2000) who model
primary commodities used as inputs in the production of manufacturing. Where Bloch and
Sapsford (2000) take an aggregate view of primary commodities and manufactures, we here focus on
coffee and hereby take an approach similar to Boratav (2001) who examines terms of trade for
individual commodities. And just like Bloch, Dockery, and Sapsford (2004) we analyse the effect of
mark up on wages and commodity prices on the final consumer prices.
Price transmission literature such as Hazell, Jaramillo, and Williamson (1990),
Mundlak and Larson (1992), Baffes and Gardner (2003), Krivonos (2004), Morisset (1998) and
Weldegebriel (2004) also offer a framework to analyse prices of commodities at different
3
nodes of the commodity chain. This part of the literature views producer and retail prices as
determined by world prices. In Bloch and Sapsford (2000) the price of manufactures, which is a good
higher up in the value chain if it is

Dehumanization In The Pianist By Wladyslaw Szpilman
The Pianist is a movie that shows the life of one man, Wladyslaw Szpilman who was a popular Jewish
Pole radio station pianist. In the World War II which is a background of the movie, How Szpilman
suffered and how he survived are presented in the movie. While the movie portrays Szpilman s life, it
also shows how the Jewish people are dehumanized by Nazi during the war. The director, Roman
Polanski, successfully uses camera angle, lighting and plot structure, and characterization to present
the theme of dehumanization.
One technique that is used by Polanski is camera angles. The use of camera angles has enabled the
audience to see how unimportant the Polish Jews to the Nazis and therefore why they are
dehumanised. For instance, they use a panning shot to show the line of the Jewish while waiting next
to each other just before the Nazis shoot them down. This panning shot clearly shows the number of
polish people who were standing on the line and how unimportant when they are just shot down with
no interest in their individualities which are individual human beings. So this very clearly shows how
the Nazis dehumanised the polish Jews. Another example of the camera angles used is seen in the
scene that closes up the Jewish people s face who is waiting for the death with bullet loading sound.
This close up shot clearly shows the fear, miseries, and dread that the Jewish people can feel just
before the Nazis shoot and how they are deprived the happiness that they can feel as a human. Hence,
this also effectively shows how the polish Jews are dehumanised emotionally by the nazis. The theme
of dehumanization of Polish Jews is clearly conveyed, as the camera angles successfully show how
unimportant the Jews were regarded and how they feel.
Another technique that is used is changing light with reference to the plot structure. The use of
lighting has allowed the audience to see the obvious contrast between the beginning when Szpilman
was having a happy life, and after the Nazi came and occupied so that how Polish Jews are getting
dehumanised. For instance, the light was extremely bright at the beginning of the film, Szpilman was
playing the piano at the radio station and having a meal with the family. When the Nazi

Sociology Chapter 6 Summary
Chapter six brings a different approach at introducing the importance of sociology. This chapter,
focuses upon the historical significance of American sociology as society knows of it today. It
discusses many different aspects of sociology, but it intentionally focuses on these important aspects
that include: The Chicago school , sociologists whom attributed to American sociology, and the rise of
female sociologists. These three fundamentals establish the overall history of American sociology. The
first aspect began the adventure and established sociology within America, occurred from The
Chicago school . Here, American sociology officially became established in 1892, by Albion Small,
who lead the groundwork for many students with an interest in sociology to be capable to study
accordingly. The school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their stance may not have been as boisterous then as it is now, but they have always played an
important role within the formation of todays society. The final attribute, studied within this chapter,
supports this notion with the rise of female workers within America. Some of the most famous women
social employees were: Jane Addams, Charlotte Gilman, Anna Cooper, Ida Wells Barnett, Marianne
Weber, and Beatrice Webb. Each of these women were still looked upon as inferior to men despite
their contributions to society as a whole. These women believed sociology was developed from
scholarly investigations that helped to attribute to the ideology of improving ones life through
education and learning means. The women believed that this change would bring about both a sense of
belong for women within cultural societies as well as modeling the community into a world in which
everyone can coincide together. Their work would not be accounted for under the sociological realm
of study... but it would be attributed to the greater sense of communal study as it is known

  • 2. Do you agree with the view that the British Public’s... Do you agree with the view that the British Public s enthusiasm for the Empire increased during the Second Boer War (1899 1902)? Explain your answer using sources 4, 5, and 6 and your own knowledge. The Second Boer War was a landmark in British imperial history because of its impact on British politics, society and military tactics. The Second Boer War led to drastic reforms amongst the military and amongst the people as the Conservative party was removed from power by the Liberal party in the post war election of 1906. However, enthusiasm for the war at the time was quite high; patriotism amongst the British was a cause of much of the support the government at the time received during the war. But did it increase or decrease, and why? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This lack of support became apparent in the 1906 general election in which the Conservative government (Whom had been in control of the Empire during the Boer War.) was ousted in a landslide defeat by the Liberal party. This was mainly because of the war and the effects it had on Britain. The public had been outraged at British tactics during the Second Boer War. Especially that of concentration camps, scorched earth tactics, the poisoning of wells and the burning of Boer homesteads. Therefore, the transition from a conventional to a guerrilla war caused a loss in enthusiasm amongst the British people for the Second Boer war. In conclusion, I somewhat agree that enthusiasm for the Empire increased during the Second Boer War, however, I only believe that enthusiasm increased as the early stages of the war progressed, but as soon as it transitioned from a conventional war to a guerrilla war, enthusiasm decreased as casualties and costs increased along with the brutal tactics used by the British in their attempts to combat the Boers strategy. The loss of enthusiasm can be attributed to other things, for example, the discovery that 40% of Britons were unfit for military service revealed how poor public health in Britain was at the time and how the laissez faire attitude of the Conservative government contributed to it. But overall I believe that the loss of enthusiasm can mainly be attributed to the actual war ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Standardization For A Format War 1.Describe standardization, format wars, and how standardization can lead to a format war. Standardization: Set of predefined specifications, rules or features that manufactures or producers need to follow when they make/produce the products/goods or components of it. Example MacDonalds set standardization for each of its menu items like size, weight, food value etc. So, each food item need to prepare according to predefined standard. Format wars: It is a kind of battle or war among the companies to set and control the standard in a market. In other words a company set standard for its products, similerly another company of same industry also set standard, now they compete in the market for customers and long term better control the market. Example Microsoft and Intel had won format war against Apple computer s proprietary system and later against IBM OS/2 opereting system. How standardization can lead to a format war: Standardization can be an improtant source of competitive advantages. Most of the cases one standard become the winning standard, so many wars in industries occure around the companies for get the winning standard. Thus standardization lead to format war. 2.Once standardization occurs, how does the industry benefit? • 4. Leadership Concepts Of The Film Nemo In this paper I will identify and explain the leadership concepts that I learned in this class using characters from the film Finding Nemo. To do so I will provide examples of transformative leadership and describe the impact it had on others. I will also explain how the characters acquired their leadership effectiveness by identifying experiences that were instrumental in their leadership development. Transformative Leaders The three characters in the film Finding Nemo that displayed transformative leadership are Marlin, Dory and Gill. Marlin0020goes on a journey to find his lost son Nemo. While on his journey Marlin experiences many challenges and meets new friends. Marlin learns that he no longer needs to be afraid, and that he can be a leader. Along the way Marlin meets Dory, who joins him on his journey. She is a very positive fish who suffers from short term memory loss. Dory always maintains a positive attitude, calms Marlin as he becomes upset and helps Marlin become more positive as well (Bennis, 2009). Throughout the movie Dory shows Marlin that he can trust her. Dory easily adjusts to new situations and thinks outside of the box which contributes to Marlin being reunited with Nemo. As Dory and Marlin s journey nears the end Marlin begins to have a lot of respect and trust for Dory. Gill is also a transformative leader. Nemo met Gill in the fish tank at the dentist s office after he was captured. Nemo was very scared and unfamiliar with his new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Disability Simulation Paper On Disability Disability Awareness Simulation Paper Disability simulation is the process where an able bodied individual assumes a position of the person with disability to try and understand what really happens in the life of a person with disability. It is offers experience that allows one to learn more about people living with disability and hopefully treat them better; have a change of perception. It gives first hand experience on how life of person with disability really is. A day alternating as a person on the wheelchair and as assistant had so much to offer as will be illustrated below. First was to use public transportation. My partner and I chose to ride the bus to catch a glimpse of what using a wheelchair in the bus would mean. I was the assistant in this case. At first I thought it would be an easy time working as an assistant. I expected to be given priority and special treatment as I had a person on the wheelchair with me; but no. Boarding the bus was a bit difficult since the bus did not have enough space to accommodate the wheelchair. We needed help to get in as the floor of the bus was higher than the ground we stood on. In the bus, the wheelchair had to be folded while in the bus since the space to put it was limited. This was an eye opener for us to advocate for public transportation especially the bus to be modified to accommodate persons with physical disability using a wheelchair. A lift or a ramp could be provided for easy boarding of the bus. Additional space ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Victimization of Teenage Girls What does it mean to be a girl according to society? How does society see it? In many countries, a girl is seen as powerless, uneducated, and too emotional to handle a man s job. For example, women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to drive. In the past, writers used to describe a woman s role as the victim of many forms of discrimination in the United States of America. In other words, women were only involved in things that men thought were not important. For instance, women did not have any other role than being a housewife. They had to stay at home, watch the children, be responsible, and do all the chores. Nonetheless, American women got their freedom earlier comparing to other countries in the world. Kerry Cohen, as a practicing psychotherapist and writing teacher, provides in her book different resources and website where teen girls can get more information about these symptoms. Another second reason why teen girls are victimized is the culture of this society. Teen girls are told to be princesses when they are small. However when they are grown up they are told by their parents that they are too young to use inappropriate cloth. When they go out and meet other teens who wear sexy cloths, they are getting mixed feeling about it. Another example is when they watch TV they see girls in sexy cloths and they automatically think that it is right. The TV uses girls in bikinis to attract the audience. Even more, when teen girls go to school, they want to fit in their group of friends by wearing the same cloths because that is what they make them seem cool. Therefore, how they are seen by others is more important than anything. Image comes first. They must do anything to fit in the Cinderella s shoe. Likewise, on the short story, Where Are You Going, Where have You Been written by Joyce Carol Oates, Connie wants attention at all costs. She enjoys when men are looking at her. • 10. Persuasive Essay Against Gun Control Currently gun control has been amidst one of the most thought of debates not only in recent times, but also in prior occasions. The mass shootings occurring more often lately have fueled the altercation pertaining to one subject, gun control. Gun control may have many different meanings, or descriptions varying from person to person. One may think that gun control is banning guns all together, banning a certain category of weapons, or banning certain items like high capacity magazines, and flash suppressors. All of these would be forms of gun control, but the true meaning of gun control, as stated by an online article What Gun Control Could Look Like, Gun control would allow citizens in the United States to still purchase firearms, but there would be reasonable regulations on firearms (Greenblat). This statement introduces the idea that gun control would not be banning guns, but banning items that are unnecessary for civilians to have possession of. Banning all guns cannot happen because it would be infringing upon the second amendment, the right to bear arms. The second amendment cannot be changed or challenged, but perimeters may be set to keep guns and people s capabilities with them limited. A firearm in the hands of a criminal or someone with bad intentions is not good, but it can be prevented. Gun control needs to happen, or mass shootings and high rates of violence will continue to occur in society. Guns have contributed to a very large amount of deaths in the United States. Suicides, homicides, and mass killings all occur, and guns are the most used weapon in all of these cases. Guns are responsible for one point three percent of all deaths in the United States between the years 1999, and 2013. This made guns the twelfth leading cause of all deaths between these years (procon.org). In the United States roughly 30,000 suicides are committed every year (harvard.edu). Most of these could be prevented but the easy access to dangerous weapons such as guns plays a large role in whether or not the person attempting suicide succeeds in taking their life or not. Every day there are as many as ninety three people that die from guns. Fifty eight of the deaths, or two thirds, are people who commit suicide with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell Synopsis and Objective: October 19, 2000 Honeywell s stock was up $10 due to recent merger discussions between Honeywell and United Technologies Corporation (UTC). For every share of honeywell, UTC would pay 0.74 of its own stock. In other words, the merge would lead to a dominant supplier company in the aerospace market, and a strong competitor for GE. This led John F. Jack Welch Jr., GE s chair and CEO, to call Michael Bonsignore, chair and CEO of Honeywell, to present a bid maintaining a 1:1 share for share exchange ratio. How would General Electric and Honeywell s stock prices be affected by the investigation? Anytime a company is investigated by a regulatory commision it is generally a bad thing. The EC s investigation of the stock prices would likely have an adverse affect on the stock price and stockholder confidence of the two companies. General Electric investors know that Jack Welch is only on board with the company until the acquisition with Honeywell is over. This means that General Electric will be soon losing its cash cow of a ceo and if the deal doesn t go through then Welch will be going out on a bad note. This skepticism of whether or not the regulatory commision will accept the merger would only add to the question of General Electric moving forward positively in the future. Additionally, Honeywell may choose to go with UTC if the merger with General Electric falls through. If Honeywell does in fact go with UTC then the market position of General Electric will be compromised and their stock will once again fall. For the Honeywell company the merger question being questioned by a regulatory commision would likely lower their stock value as well. • 20. The Effects Of Lead Nitrate Contamination On The Plant... The effects of Lead Nitrate contamination on the plant Brassica rapa Ernest J. Tiller III, Corey Biology Department Birmingham Southern College Date: October 24, 2016 Teacher: Jennifer Kelly Abstract In my biology class we conducted an experiment to determine if there was a direct correlation between the concentration of lead levels in soil and the effect it has on plant synthesis and plant height. The specimen used in the experiment is a species of plant, Brassica rapa. Seeds of B. rapa were careful planted within every cell of a cubical that was filled with six different concentrations of lead which was our treatment group and the control was the cubical with no lead soil in it. Plant height and temperature were recorded with a thermostat and a mm ruler. The results show that lead concentration does not have a relationship with plant height except in concentration of 100 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg. During this three week experiment, the mean of over a hundred students plant heights were recorded and all the student s plants showed similar results meaning lead nitrate concentrations in soil does not affect the growth. Keywords: Brassica Rapa; Lead nitrate Concentration 1. Introduction The toxicity of heavy metals in soil is an environmental problem that affecting humans and ecosystems. • 22. Picky Eater By Julia Alvarez At some point of a kid s life, they want to be picky about something. They want to have some control of their little world where adults are constantly telling them what to wear, what to do, and what to eat. Food, for instance, is an easy topic where kids will fight for some independence. Throwing, yelling, crying and even bribing were the essence of a battle at dinner tables. Because some parents would automatically give in to their children s need, the kids often think they won the battle but technically they didn t. In the story, Picky Eater , Julia Alvarez tells a story of her childhood experience of home meals where her and her sisters were also picky eaters, despite having healthy food served to them. Meals, she said, at home were battlegrounds. Even if you won the dinner battle, refusing to clean your plate or drink your engrudo, you inevitably lost the war (Alvarez 145). Battlegrounds at home can occur but it doesn t have to end up being messy if the parents know how to handle the situation properly. In Picky Eater Alvarez mentioned that her parents particularly her mother was very strict on the type of food the children ate. Getting food from en la calle was strictly forbidden (Alvarez 144) because they might get sick catching some kind of disease from people who have prepared their food. Also, because Alvarez and her sisters were very thin, having leftovers on their plate wasn t allowed. To ensure her kids got all the nutrition they needed, the mother had ... • 23. Henry Ford Industry Research Paper Henry Ford and the Expansion of the Ford Industry Ford, the name almost every person in America associates with the successful car industry. However, not everyone understands how Henry Ford made the world wide business as we see it today. Nearly a century ago Henry Ford and his son Edsel procured blazing success for the Ford car industry from 1920 to 1924, to end up re nurturing the flickering flame from 1925 to 1929, while also benefiting and promoting other industries of the time. When the Ford company entered the 1920 s, they were struggling to get past financial difficulties. To buy out minority stockholders and to begin work on a new factory on the Rouge, Ford had to take out a sixty million dollar loan. The deadline for repaying this ... Edsel invested his time and money in ventures that he thought would benefit others, including the Roscoe B. Jackson Cancer research Center in Bar Harbor, Maine (Bak 128). According to The Age of Automobiles , the demand of cars created a demand for more and longer roads. This resulted in the first large scale concepts of highways. Along with highways came the conveniences needed to accompany longer trips. These being gas stations, motels, and the first fast food shops. The huge amount of cars that Ford and their competitors were putting out had to have these accommodations or else sales wouldn t nearly be as high as they were. Geldermen also explained the rise of the timber production, the surge of sawmills, the increase of freighters to carry the materials, and the demand for glass work were due to the cars being produced. The Age of Automobiles also suggests that vacationing and traveling increased productivity in places most visited. Understanding how the Ford automotive company rose and fell can help see how the businesses were always changing in the 1920 s and how a strong business can last for a very long time once a dedicated person establishes it. Overall the Ford company almost always increased in size. The cars produced by this company are still iconic in today s world and show a past of determination. Why walk when you can ... Once this process occurs, the bills are categorized in an alphanumeric arrangement for officials and residents to track during the cycle of the proposed bill. The bills are proposed the Monday after general elections. Influence from within or outside of Legislature have a massive bearing on bill becoming laws. There are several advantageous and underhanded tactics used to have a bill circulated or tossed out. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another delaying approach called Chubbing, is the process of officials controlling or exhausting time to defer votes or proposal of other bills. When a vote is cast for a bill to pass or die, presiding officers have a partial but substantial influence in this process. Requiring a 2/3 vote, the officers implement two alternatives of voting, roll call or voice. Ghost voting is a practice that is common, illegal and utilized by official. This is the act of voting without being present. Another deferral tactic used is called quorum busting where officials fail to show up or walk out of a scheduled vote. After a rigorous process of delaying and postponement, if a bill passes, it is then promoted to a conference committee. Two variations of the proposed bill are discussed. The Speaker and the Lieutenant Governor select five senators and five members of the house to operate on the committee. Once the two variations the bills are finalized, it is returned to both chambers for a vote. The Governor receives the bill and is given 10 business days to sign the bill. • 27. A Political Campaign Analysis The political campaign environment in the United States changed in 2010 with the allowance of unlimited independent expenditures by outside entities in elections. The courts decisions in Citizens United and SpeechNow.org further increases Americans concerns regarding an undue influence of money in politics. This, coupled with increasing polarization and congressional gridlock in the U.S. House of Representatives, promotes skepticism of the political process. Polarization and gridlock create perceptions that representatives do not represent the average voter preferences but represent big moneyed interests (Briffault, 2011; Gilbert and Aiken, 2015) and donors, who are more ideologically extreme than the average voter (Barber, 2014). Olsen and Brett Inder♦ ABSTRACT: To explain the value added along the coffee commodity chain we propose and estimate a theoretical model of the coffee commodity chain. The theoretical model consists of four markets and five agents in the coffee commodity chain and predicts that prices in the coffee commodity chain move together but are also influenced by income, technology and production. A vector error correction model is used to test the theoretical predictions. In addition to the theoretical conclusions the empirical model confirms the beneficial role of the International Coffee Agreement and the importance of the level of ... Darity and Davis (2005) argue that in the study of uneven development the North South trade and growth literature provides insights which have been neglected by the later literature of new growth theory and new trade theory. This has encouraged us to apply North South models to the coffee value chain. The theoretical model derived in section 2 builds on Bloch and Sapsford (2000) who model primary commodities used as inputs in the production of manufacturing. Where Bloch and Sapsford (2000) take an aggregate view of primary commodities and manufactures, we here focus on coffee and hereby take an approach similar to Boratav (2001) who examines terms of trade for individual commodities. And just like Bloch, Dockery, and Sapsford (2004) we analyse the effect of mark up on wages and commodity prices on the final consumer prices. Price transmission literature such as Hazell, Jaramillo, and Williamson (1990), Mundlak and Larson (1992), Baffes and Gardner (2003), Krivonos (2004), Morisset (1998) and Weldegebriel (2004) also offer a framework to analyse prices of commodities at different 3 nodes of the commodity chain. This part of the literature views producer and retail prices as determined by world prices. • 32. Dehumanization In The Pianist By Wladyslaw Szpilman The Pianist is a movie that shows the life of one man, Wladyslaw Szpilman who was a popular Jewish Pole radio station pianist. In the World War II which is a background of the movie, How Szpilman suffered and how he survived are presented in the movie. While the movie portrays Szpilman s life, it also shows how the Jewish people are dehumanized by Nazi during the war. The director, Roman Polanski, successfully uses camera angle, lighting and plot structure, and characterization to present the theme of dehumanization. One technique that is used by Polanski is camera angles. The use of camera angles has enabled the audience to see how unimportant the Polish Jews to the Nazis and therefore why they are dehumanised. For instance, they use a panning shot to show the line of the Jewish while waiting next to each other just before the Nazis shoot them down. This panning shot clearly shows the number of polish people who were standing on the line and how unimportant when they are just shot down with no interest in their individualities which are individual human beings. So this very clearly shows how the Nazis dehumanised the polish Jews. Another example of the camera angles used is seen in the scene that closes up the Jewish people s face who is waiting for the death with bullet loading sound. This close up shot clearly shows the fear, miseries, and dread that the Jewish people can feel just before the Nazis shoot and how they are deprived the happiness that they can feel as a human. Hence, this also effectively shows how the polish Jews are dehumanised emotionally by the nazis. The theme of dehumanization of Polish Jews is clearly conveyed, as the camera angles successfully show how unimportant the Jews were regarded and how they feel. Another technique that is used is changing light with reference to the plot structure. The use of lighting has allowed the audience to see the obvious contrast between the beginning when Szpilman was having a happy life, and after the Nazi came and occupied so that how Polish Jews are getting dehumanised. For instance, the light was extremely bright at the beginning of the film, Szpilman was playing the piano at the radio station and having a meal with the family. When the Nazi ...
