Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has several diagnostic criteria including exposure to a traumatic or stressful event such as experiencing or witnessing death, threats of death, or serious injury. Following the traumatic event, symptoms include intrusive memories and flashbacks of the event, avoidance of trauma-related thoughts or reminders, negative changes in beliefs and feelings, and increased arousal and emotional reactions. For a diagnosis of PTSD, symptoms must last longer than one month and not be due to other factors such as substance use or illness.
