There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 is caused by the pancreas being unable to produce insulin, type 2 is caused by the body being unable to supply enough insulin, and gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Type 1 diabetes makes up about 10% of cases and requires insulin medication, while type 2 diabetes is more common at 90% of cases. Gestational diabetes is temporary and resolved after birth but can cause problems for the baby. Current cures for type 1 diabetes include pancreas transplantation and artificial pancreas development, while prevention of type 2 focuses on meal planning and exercise.
