Within experiments creating front covers and double page spreads for a magazine, the author learned valuable skills in Photoshop and InDesign. For front covers, they explored different color schemes and layouts to understand what looks aesthetic and draws in audiences. They also realized preferences for their actual magazine cover. For double page spreads, practice helped improve InDesign text skills though their first attempt needs tweaking. Overall, the experiments provided a learning curve to strengthen techniques for the main project.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Front Covers
Within our experiments we did some front covers as practice. I did mine personally about
music and used the same artist and same general idea for both of my front covers that I
created. I used different colour schemes to create a different feel to both of them. For
example for my first one I made it aim around the main colour as orange which matched
the background well and made it look very aesthetic but didn’t have much more of a colour
scheme going on. My second one however was mainly red and black with the background
being red and the text being black, The red definitely made the front cover stand out and
pop but I still prefered that aesthetic of the first front cover I created. I think this
experiment helped me with a lot of skills within photoshop although I did know a few of
the techniques I used already it helped me improve my skills within these techniques.
3. Reflection
As I've said I think this experiment will help me a lot within my techniques within making a
front cover when it comes to making the one for my actual front cover. This experiment
has definitely helped me know what layouts look good within front covers and what can
make them look messy and not as well put together. I think I have learnt a lot while
working on this experiment and I do think I have a few ideas about what kind of thing I
would like to create within the main project. This has helped me realise what kind of
magazine I would like to make and what to use to draw audiences in. I have also learnt
about colour schemes which I will be using in my main project as colour schemes bring the
whole cover together.
5. Double Page Spread
In this experiment we practices making double page spreads within our magazines. We took
an existing article on something we are interested in and we made our own double page
spread for them. I personally took an article about a rap group called Migos as they are
releasing a new album and there is a lot of controversy and unmistaken gossip about the
album and about the group themselves. We created this in both photoshop and in design as
we used photo shop for images we wanted to insert into the document and In design for
the text in the project. I think my actual practice on this could be a lot better and I will
definitely need to improve on my double page spread for my main project.
6. Reflection
I definitely think my double page spread could do with some improvements and isn't the
most well put together thing I have ever done. I will definitely be tweaking it this week.
However within this experiment I have learnt a lot within In design as it was a new program
to me personally and I had never used it before so I definitely learnt a lot of techniques
within that field that I will most definitely be using within my work in the future as it is
way better within inserting text and it makes text a lot easier to work with in comparison
to photoshop. Also I think I will need to improve my skills with practice when making my
actual double page spread however this experiment was a good learning curve and I have
definitely learnt from my mistakes wityhin this expoeriment and I wont be repeating them
within my actual magazine.
