Development of Singapore by leading of Lim Kuan Yew
Lee Kuan Yew is the first prime minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990, that is
around 30 years. He led Singapore to independent on august, 1965 and he is the longest prime
minister in Singapore. In this 30 years Lee Kuan Yew was the main person to responsible for
the rapid development of Singapore. Lew Kuan Yew brings Singapore from a developing
country to a fully developed country. Nowadays, Singapore is a very famous country by
leading of Lee Kuan Yew. Even until now, he still is a person who is active in political issue
and has much influence in Singapore.
In 1965, Singapore is a developing countries and it had nothing. For example,
Singapore doesn’t have armed forces, no airline. Besides that, it also faced a lot of problem
such as unemployment, housing shortages and lack of land and natural resources.
During the Lee Kuan Yew’s administration curbed unemployment, increase the
standard of living and implemented a large-scale public housing programme. Besides that,
the country’s economic infrastructure was developed, the racial tension was emlinated and an
independent national defense system was created.
There are some developments in Singapore in different aspect:
Economy development
Since Singapore separate from Malaysia in 1965, Singapore face a small domestic market,
and high levels of unemployment and poverty. Unemployment averaged 14%, GDP per
capita was less than $2,700 and half of the population was illiterate. At that time Singapore
facing some problem such as Singapore lacked of the natural resources, facing a high
unemployment rate and high population growth. Lee Kuan Yew adopted two-pronged
approach to overcome these problems.
The first strategy is to provide incentives to multinational Corporation (MNCs) from japan,
western Europe and the USA to set up factories in Singapore thus succeeding in creating jobs
of the unemployment.
The second strategy was to transform Singapore in to more organized and efficient country.
This was achieved by placing high standards of public service, such as in security, health,
education, telecommunication and transportation. From this strategy can led Singapore to
attract foreign talent to invest and work in Singapore.
The country’s economic infrastructure was developed
A key point that led Singapore’s impressive growth record was its infrastructure. The
highly quality physical infrastructure combined with the highly efficient services and the
political stability led Singapore to be developed country. In 1965, Singapore had nothing
infrastructure to improve their international trade.
Under Lee Kuan Yew administer, Lee Kuan Yew started to develop and expand the
international air point located at Paya Lebar to improve the international trade and handle
bigger cargo. Singapore’s Changi International Airport is also a good example in this regard.
Besides that, control the vehicle population to avoid the traffic clog the road network. Besides
that, the container port was built in the 1960s to handle the container ships from all over the
world.
Lee Kuan Yew formed the Economic Development Board on August 1, 1961 to lead
government agency for planning and executing strategies to enhance Singapore’s position as
a global business center and grow the Singapore economy. In addition, the port of Singapore
Authority was form on 1964 to manage and develop port operation.
Overcome the housing shortages
Everyone knows that Singapore is a small country and the land for build houses are
limited and led to the housing shortage. The housing and development board was formed on
1960. The housing and development board is a statutory board of the ministry of national
development responsibility for public housing in Singapore and make sure that it is enough
for the increasing in the population of Singapore. In 1960s,70% of the Singaporeans lived in
badly condition and in slums. Today, around 82% of Singaporeans live in public housing
provided by the housing development board.
Developed of education system
Education was another important area that Lee Kuan Yew had look into. Singapore is
on gaining its independence from British colonial rule in 1965. In 1965 the education system
quite poor. There are four medium of instruction school system, low investment in school
infrastructure, inappropriate ‘British-based’ curriculum, education was poorly linked to
emerging economic needs, poor teacher training and low status of teachers.
There are two education system to developed the education. Firstly, the survival-
driven education (1965-1978). The point of this system are merged the ethnically diverse
educational streams into a single national system and emphasis on languages, science, math
and moral education in the curriculum and investment in Vocational and Technical education
and so on.
Second is the Efficient-driven education (1978-1997).by the early 1980s, Singapore
had grown to becomes a New-Indusrialling Economy and the education system was unable to
supply the skills needed in the economy. Efficient-driven education result in lower attrition,
more students having vocational technical opportunities and closer education economy fit. In
1990, Singapore’s education system had to respond to growing impact of knowledge-based,
new economy.
Lee Kuan Yew support for pragmatic economic and social programs, building a strong
government team back up highly competent that helped build the foundation for what is
Singapore is today.
Singapore joins the ASEAN
ASEAN founded 8 august 1967 to promote cooperation between Indonesia, Thailand,
the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore and the ASEAN declaration is sign in Bangkok.
Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, loans and
Vietnam.
23 February, 1976. The first summit of the ASEAN is held in the Bali, Indonesia. The
treaty of amity and cooperation (TAC) in southeast is signed by all ASEAN Heads of the
state and government. TAC is a peace agreement between Southeast Asian countries. TAC
was established by the founding members of the ASEAN. Besides that, the ASEAN
secretariat is also established. Singapore supports the concept of Southeast Asia regionalism
and plays an active role in the ASEAN.
6 November 1989, Singapore is also a member of the Asia pacific economic
cooperation (APEC) forum which has its secretariat in Singapore and attends the grouping’s
first ministerial meeting held in Canberra, AUSTRALIA.
Singapore joins the United Nation
Singapore applied to join the United States (UN) on 3th September 1965. Singapore
becomes the 117th UN member state on 21 September 1965.Singapore works to develop and
maintain good tie with other countries through a variety of diplomatic effort and channels.
The republic was admitted to the UN shortly after independence, and has benefited greatly
from its UN membership. Singapore believe that small nation states, which comprise more
than half of the UN’s membership, can play a greater role in ensuring international peace and
stability .
Because of the joining the united nation, Singapore becomes actively in various
global, multinational and unilateral organization to promote international cooperation.
