Singaporean Way: Lee Kuan Yew Once a small fishing village with almost no natural resources,
Singapore has flourished into a point of pride for the world. As Nicolas Berggruen, a famous French
investor and philanthropist said, "Singapore was created out of the swamp, with a strong emotional
idea: a safe place mostly for Chinese, but accepting other cultures and other races." Singapore had
been at a disadvantage for most of its early age, until the achievement of its first world status
towards the end of the 20th century. Much of this success can be attributed to the first prime
minister of Singapore, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. Malcolm Gladwell in David and ... Show more content

Mr. Lee had a vision for Singapore and no one was going to change that. As Kenny Roy's article,
"Lee Kuan Yew: The Real Tiger" mentions, "Mr. Lee's first order of business after establishing his
position in office was to introduce a five–year plan that concentrated on urban renewal and
construction of new public housing. Education reforms and industrialization were also key areas in
which he placed his importance – and eventually contributed to the success of Singapore and him
being a forward thinking leader." Moving on from the strong legislation Mr. Lee put into place to
allow Singapore to get independence, stringent laws were also part of how Mr. Lee helped
Singapore overcome some of its disadvantages. Every westerner in current times has heard of the
absurd laws aimed at making Singapore being overly clean. Chewing gum was banned in 1992
because vandals disrupted public transport systems by sticking their gum on the doors of trains. This
became more of a disadvantage as citizens could no longer chew gum nor bring food and drinks
onboard any public transport network that was and till today is still commonly used by 70% of
Singapore's population. Adding to the chewing gum ban, Singapore imposed heavy fines on people
who littered and contributed to pollution. Yet this law, which was put

Why Singapore Attracts Foreign Entrepreneurs and Firms
Why Singapore Attracts Foreign Entrepreneurs and Firms?
Singapore's quality lifestyle fascinates the world. Its unbelievable evolution as world's leading
business and finance hub persuaded Jim Rogers, an American–born businessman and Wall Street
giant, to move to Singapore in 2007. This country is now best known for living peacefully with
cultural diversity, offering a safe living environment to its residents, tax facilities, a world class
business community and a very stable lifestyle.
There is no question about the fact that the country is growing as an ideal place for setting up new
business empires. If the aspiring business community is thinking of migrating here, the major
driving forces would be –
1. Ease of doing business. The country has been very affable in terms of offering favorable business
regulation policies. World Bank now ranks this place number one for this privilege. 2. Forbes
Magazine ranks this place as the third wealthiest nation of the world. 3. As per Ernst and Young's
2011 Globalization Index, Singapore has acquired the third position in the top 60 world's largest
globalized economy. 4. One of the most favorable country in terms of political stability. 5. Singapore
has world's most efficient human resource. 6. This country is best known for its quality of lifestyle.
7. In Singapore, nobody has to pay tax on capital gains or dividends. 8. Personal tax also ranges

The History Of Singapore Is Rich With Surprising Twists,...
The history of Singapore is rich with surprising twists, bendy turns and wondrous triumphs. A very
long, long time ago during the 14th century, a small but strategically located island that had once
been named "island at the end of a peninsula" then changed to Temasek ("Sea Town") then to
Singapura and eventually to what it is now known as Singapore. It got the name Singapura from a
prince from Palembang who was on a hunting trip when he caught sight of an animal he had never
seen before. Taking this as a good sign he founded the city where the animal had been spotted giving
it the name " The Lion City" or Singapura or so the legend says. The city was ruled by 5 kings and

The treaty established Singapore as a trading station and the city quickly grew from there as an
entrepot trade hub, which attracted immigrants from all over (China, India, the Malay
Archipelago...). Raffles also implemented the Raffles Town Plan/ Jackson Plan three years later in
1822, to address the issue of growing disorderliness in the colony within the segregated 4 ethnic
residential areas. The 4 areas were the European Town made up of European traders, Eurasians, and
rich Asians; the ethnic Chinese were in Chinatown; the Ethnic Indians in Chulia Kampong area, and
in Kampong Glam there was Muslims, ethnic Malays and Arabs. Things continued to prosper and
do well in Singapore especially after 1869 when the Suez Canal opened which allowed for
steamships to become the major form of ocean transport. With Singapore's excellent harbor, it
became a flourishing commercial center and the leading seaport of Southeast Asia. It handled the
vast export in tin and rubber from British–ruled Malaya until the Japanese capturing. Unfortunately,
all good things hit a rough patches, as did Singapore during WWII when they were attacked by
Japanese on 8th December 1941. They lasted till the 15th of February 1942 where they surrendered
to the Japanese and remained under them until the Straits Settlement in 1946. Under the Japanese

The Fall Of Singapore : A Year Ignite Clement Chuah
Fall of Singapore HASS 2nd Year Ignite Clement Chuah – 24 August 2015 Introduction The Fall
of Singapore was considered one of the greatest defeats in the history of the British Army. It was
also considered Britain 's worst defeat in World War Two. The Japanese had already taken many
other countries in the Asia–Pacific region during the war but Singapore was one of the worse. This
report will explain the reasons and events that led to the fall of Singapore and how it affected people
around the world. Events that led up the Fall of Singapore By the end of 1941, Japan had already
conquered Korea and Indonesia. If Japan wanted to expand and obtain more resources, it needed to
destroy the American, British, Dutch and Australian bases that were standing in its way. On the 7 of
December 1941, over 200 Japanese planes attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor.
The planes attacked American ships, cargo and personnel. 188 The extent of the Asia–Pacific region

Differences Between Singapore And Malaysia
Singapore and Malaysia were both similarly colonized by the British. However, their development
after independence differed in many ways. In this paper, I will examine, with help from resources
provided in the course and minimal research, how their colonial experiences affected their political
and social development after independence. After which, investigating the depth of influence their
colonizers had, and why, differing racial ideologies had the greatest impact on their development.
Malaysia was colonized late by the British, with the Dutch colonizing Malacca first. In British
Malaya, the split anthropological imagination of Oriental Chinese and Malay was the basis of a split
colonial rule in which the governor presided over protectorate government, incorporating Malay
royalty and aristocratic rajas in the Peninsular Malay States and Crown Colony government in the
Straits Settlements. Despite settling down of both Chinese and Indian immigrants in Malaya, the
colonial government maintained their non–resident status in the Malay states and gave 'British
subject' status only to the descendants of immigrants in the settlements. Between 1814 to 1860 the
British were in a state of non–interference. Non–interference meant that the different sultan states
could decide how they wanted to design their state. Since the colonial government never accepted
the Chinese as permanent residents of the country, it is not surprising that the Malay population in
Malaysia believed the

Singapore 's Trade Between Singapore And Japan
Two of the worlds leading economic countries accounted for more than three fourths of Singapore 's
trade in services, while other smaller countries accounted for the remaining one fourth. Due to these
foreign investments into the economy, Singapore was able to prosper. The Aegean Islands was the
highest percentage of Singapore 's South Eastern Asian trade. As predicted by Stamford Raffles,
Singapore succeeded in trade with the Aegean Islands, which made up 74% of Singapore 's overall
trade in 1825. Towards the early 19th century, the Singapore economy began to benefit from one of
the world leading powers. By the early 1930 's, Singapore had become the principal distributor of
Japanese goods in Malaya, Thailand and Dutch East Indies. Elsewhere the increasing financial bond
between Singapore and Japan is evident through their early trade and distribution. From the early
entrepot trade economy of the British, a trading port where products could be imported, stored and
trade, Singapore has continued to restructure itself and diversify with the inclusion of other foreign
powers. Singapore's wide range of foreign powers is what has allowed it to grow financially over
seas. With the aid and investment of some of the most economically successful countries in the
world, Singapore was able to grow. Singapore 's major trading partners were commercial services
that would open possibilities for the future enterprises of Singapore. The industrialization of

International Legal and Ethical Issues in Business
Unit 5 Individual Project
ABSTRACT
In this paper I will discuss environmental regulations and labor laws in place in Thailand and
Singapore. This paper will show that while Singapore seems to have stricter environmental
regulations in place in it's country, the labor laws in Thailand seems to protect its citizens better with
better work hour regulations and wage requirements. Singapore's labor laws can stand to be revisited
so as to keep the working citizens safe from greedy business owners.
What are Thailand and Singapore's environmental regulation levels? Thailand's government has
been known to keep loose environmental standards for investors. Many foreign investors have ...

Do you feel that the country's hour and wage legislation is ethical? Explain.
Thailand's hour and wage regulations are adequate; however, Singapore's hour and wage regulation
still leave way too much room for employees to be taken advantage of by their employers. The fact
there is no national minimum wage requirement leaves too much room for employers to underpay
their employees. There is also no regulation in place to limit the amount of hours per day an
employee can work. There is also no regulation for overtime pay. The lack of regulation in place to
determine how many hours per day or week a person can work before overtime pay is required
leaves the employees at the mercy of their employers.

Why Did Japanese Chose Pulau Ubin As Their Divergent And...
Why did Japanese chose Pulau Ubin as their divergent and went attacking from the West and not
East? How did the Japanese army manage to cross over through sea and river?
All these precise planning made by the Japanese army was the cause of the poor leadership of LT.
GEN Arthur Percival. Percival failed in his judgment and was complacent as he underestimate the
capability of the enemy, thinking that they are less likely able to attack from the North West due to
the tough terrain. This area of the island was mostly mangrove swamp and jungle, broken by rivers
and creeks. The British had confidently predicted that the Japanese would attack from the sea. This
explained why all the defences on Singapore pointed out to sea. It was inconceivable to British
military planners that the island could be attacked any other way – least of all, through the jungle
and mangrove swamps of the Malay Peninsula. Therefore, the defence on the North West of
Singapore was weak as the Australian forces deployed there was small and the terrain have
prohibited the allies in their construction of defence obstacles and also reduction in their fields of
fire. Besides, he was also fearfully aware that an attack could come from any corner: land, sea, or
air, therefore, he fatally dispersed his forces.
However, on the other side General Tomoyuki Yamashita was a more competent and mission
focused leader whom practice critical thinking. From aerial reconnaissance, scouts, infiltrators and

Decades ago, Kampong Glam housed people from the Malay Peninsula, Java, Sumatra, Celebes

Thus, there is no need for local students to worry about the rise in the number of foreign students.
Hence, it is not entirely right to say that the influx of foreign students in Singapore will deprive our
local students of opportunities in the field of academia. Another negative social impact is that they
reinforce prejudices about immigrants in certain quarters. The way of living of some foreigners
leads to the locals becoming upset over. For example, talking loudly in public, spitting and being
unhygienic are some of the habits that Singaporeans find themselves uncomfortable with. This is
especially so for the lowly skilled workers who forget that they are in a developed country and
behave the way they do in their villages or homes. For example, the Straits Times covered new
about social problems brought about by foreign workers. Many locals respondents mentioned things
like workers getting heavily drunk at night and chatting away loudly at the void decks of Housing
Development Board (HDB) flats. They also complained of workers talking loudly on their mobile
phones on public transport and the more severe problem was that many locals felt that foreign
workers like to stare at females. Anger has erupted over such problems leading to a
misunderstanding of locals and foreigners. Locals try to stay away from foreigners. Thus there is a
communication barrier between locals and some foreigners due to such social problems that arise.

A Case Study of Singapore
Introduction
Singapore has long built its economy on its strategic positioning for trade. The country is now home
to the world's second–largest container port according to the World Shipping Council (2013). The
country's position as a leading trade makes it a natural place to find solutions to global supply chain
issues, and has also encouraged a significant amount of foreign direct investment in the country.
Foreign companies have set up shop in Singapore, often in either services or retail. This paper will
analyze some of the issues that foreign firms dealing in Singapore have with respect to global supply
chain management.
Case Study #1: Starbucks
Starbucks has a significant retail presence in Singapore, but it also benefits from the country's
geographic position in a couple of ways. The first is that Singapore is situated in the heart of a fertile
coffee–growing region critical islands like Java, Sumatra and New Guinea are nearby, as are high
volume growing regions like Vietnam. Starbucks has set up a regional distribution center in
Singapore in order to manage the flow of goods and services throughout Asia, both in terms of raw
materials and finished goods.
Changi Airport Group (2013) notes that Starbucks is one of many Western countries to have such a
regional distribution center. With stores throughout Southeast Asia, the coffee company can organize
its goods in Singapore for onward distribution, either overland to Malaysia and Thailand, or over sea

According to the Singapore Department of Statistics, the literacy rates in Singapore have improved
drastically over the past decades, in tandem with the creation of compulsory education children in

However, the decrease in ability of Singaporeans (citizens of Singapore) in being as fluent in their
native language has been seen to be interrelated to their increase in ability to converse and write in
English (Department of Statistics Singapore, 2000), a key sign of linguistic deculturation taking
place.
In today's society, education and being fluent in economic and trade language has become the yard
stick for success; especially so in Singapore where her trade language is Standard English. The
importance of being fluent in Standard English is increasingly latent in eminence and prominence as
Singapore progresses as a country; to the extent where citizens of Singapore are gradually leaning
into language loss and deculturation of their own native languages. Attention to the severity in
language loss and the possibility of deculturation of the nation as a whole has similarly increased
over the years, alongside the inflating rates of Singapore citizens being fluent in the first language of
the country – English. The evolution in the importance of language since Singapore becoming of a
nation can be seen via campaigns and education Singapore has implemented in an attempt to bring
linguistic capability to the resident population.

Cross culture risks refer to risks that arise from cultural differences. Since the majority population in
Singapore is Chinese, we can infer that the differences in cultures and decision–making styles are
not large, which means the cross culture risk is not high.
Internalization Potential Market: Singapore
The four risks mentioned above suggest that Singapore is the easiest place in Southeast Asia to do

Introduction
Fort Canning is a well known hill located at the South of Singapore. It was called Bukit
Larangan(Forbidden Hill) before Sir Stamford Raffles arrived, as the locals believed that 14th
century kings had built their palaces on the hill. It turned out that they were right, as later on when
some of the vegetation was removed ancient ruins were found. Archeology at the site has also

witnessed many of Singapore's historical milestones such as the opening of Singapore's first
botanical garden, the world war II in Singapore and the British surrendering to the Japanese.
However, now it is getting more and more forgotten by the younger generation of Singaporeans.

The Surprising History of Singapore's Rise as a Global Hub

  • 1. David and Goliath Essay Tushall Sharma Scott Lankford English 1A / Essay 2 / Prompt 1 03/17/2015 Overcoming Odds the Singaporean Way: Lee Kuan Yew Once a small fishing village with almost no natural resources, Singapore has flourished into a point of pride for the world. As Nicolas Berggruen, a famous French investor and philanthropist said, "Singapore was created out of the swamp, with a strong emotional idea: a safe place mostly for Chinese, but accepting other cultures and other races." Singapore had been at a disadvantage for most of its early age, until the achievement of its first world status towards the end of the 20th century. Much of this success can be attributed to the first prime minister of Singapore, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. Malcolm Gladwell in David and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mr. Lee had a vision for Singapore and no one was going to change that. As Kenny Roy's article, "Lee Kuan Yew: The Real Tiger" mentions, "Mr. Lee's first order of business after establishing his position in office was to introduce a five–year plan that concentrated on urban renewal and construction of new public housing. Education reforms and industrialization were also key areas in which he placed his importance – and eventually contributed to the success of Singapore and him being a forward thinking leader." Moving on from the strong legislation Mr. Lee put into place to allow Singapore to get independence, stringent laws were also part of how Mr. Lee helped Singapore overcome some of its disadvantages. Every westerner in current times has heard of the absurd laws aimed at making Singapore being overly clean. Chewing gum was banned in 1992 because vandals disrupted public transport systems by sticking their gum on the doors of trains. This became more of a disadvantage as citizens could no longer chew gum nor bring food and drinks onboard any public transport network that was and till today is still commonly used by 70% of Singapore's population. Adding to the chewing gum ban, Singapore imposed heavy fines on people who littered and contributed to pollution. Yet this law, which was put ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Taking this as a good sign he founded the city where the animal had been spotted giving it the name " The Lion City" or Singapura or so the legend says. • 21. Differences Between Singapore And Malaysia Singapore and Malaysia were both similarly colonized by the British. However, their development after independence differed in many ways. In this paper, I will examine, with help from resources provided in the course and minimal research, how their colonial experiences affected their political and social development after independence. After which, investigating the depth of influence their colonizers had, and why, differing racial ideologies had the greatest impact on their development. Malaysia was colonized late by the British, with the Dutch colonizing Malacca first. In British Malaya, the split anthropological imagination of Oriental Chinese and Malay was the basis of a split colonial rule in which the governor presided over protectorate government, incorporating Malay royalty and aristocratic rajas in the Peninsular Malay States and Crown Colony government in the Straits Settlements. Despite settling down of both Chinese and Indian immigrants in Malaya, the colonial government maintained their non–resident status in the Malay states and gave 'British subject' status only to the descendants of immigrants in the settlements. Between 1814 to 1860 the British were in a state of non–interference. Non–interference meant that the different sultan states could decide how they wanted to design their state. Since the colonial government never accepted the Chinese as permanent residents of the country, it is not surprising that the Malay population in Malaysia believed the ... Singapore 's Trade Between Singapore And Japan Two of the worlds leading economic countries accounted for more than three fourths of Singapore 's trade in services, while other smaller countries accounted for the remaining one fourth. Due to these foreign investments into the economy, Singapore was able to prosper. The Aegean Islands was the highest percentage of Singapore 's South Eastern Asian trade. As predicted by Stamford Raffles, Singapore succeeded in trade with the Aegean Islands, which made up 74% of Singapore 's overall trade in 1825. Towards the early 19th century, the Singapore economy began to benefit from one of the world leading powers. By the early 1930 's, Singapore had become the principal distributor of Japanese goods in Malaya, Thailand and Dutch East Indies. Elsewhere the increasing financial bond between Singapore and Japan is evident through their early trade and distribution. From the early entrepot trade economy of the British, a trading port where products could be imported, stored and trade, Singapore has continued to restructure itself and diversify with the inclusion of other foreign powers. Singapore's wide range of foreign powers is what has allowed it to grow financially over seas. With the aid and investment of some of the most economically successful countries in the world, Singapore was able to grow.
