Design based learning

Editor's Notes

  • #5 The idea that teaching is the design of learning experiences – resonated with me. I went to teachers college in a past life (won’t say how long ago). (Primary/junior years). Learned a lot about teaching practices – lesson planning, classroom management – that sort of thing. I wound up taking Multimedia Design at Algonquin and my first job was designing web sites for Learning and Teaching Services. That’s when I got to know the design process and I liked the idea of designing for a “user experience” which requires really understanding your audience and their needs. Fast forward today, I now a student again – I’m doing an online masters in Design-Based Learning at the University of Calgary. I’m presenting here not as an expert but a curious explorer of design-based learning -- I’m hoping to connect with others who may also be interested in this area. So there it is, my devious ulterior motive is revealed.
  • #7 -I am most concerned with conveying to you today the mindset and spirit of design thinking. There many, many process models and techniques related to design thinking. I will review a couple just to give you a sense. But there are a few qualities that are hallmarks of Design Thinking… Some of these include
  • #8 Mindfulness – pause to observe and consider things you may not have before. Action-oriented – it is experiential. You learn by doing. In fact, it can be a “learning through designing” situation as we.. Lastly, collaboration. This mindset has a lot to offer our learner-driven, innovation and entrepreneurial focus at Algonquin.
  • #9 Common elements… you find across processes
