The Atacama Desert is located in northern Chile along the Pacific coast of South America. It is the second driest desert in the world, composed mostly of salt basins, sand, and lava flows. Despite the extreme aridity, some animals have adapted to the harsh environment, including the guanaco, desert fox, and viscacha. Birds such as the Gray Gull also inhabit the region, flying daily to the coast to feed before returning inland to their eggs.
